What no mention whatsoever of the young players on Edison!?! I guess the coaches at Edison are trying to keep a low profile so they can sneak up on people. Sorry to let the proverbial cat out of the bag, but that program is loaded with a lot of nice young players. Two players who I think are going to be very good this year are a pair of Freshman catchers: Jessica Plaza and Casey Africano. Both have outstanding arms and can hit the ball. Plaza hit her second home run in three games and Africano her first. Ironically both catchers may wind up blocked by their returning all first team catcher senior Courtney Gonzalez. who is also the team's best hitter. Both have found a way into the lineup at other positions thus far and have left Edison coaches with a great problem:a wealth of talent behind the plate. Also, there are a number of other good young players in the pipeline. The Chargers made the playoffs last year for the first time in quite a while, but Sunset league opponents be forewarned, this will be a program to be reckoned with.
Ken,
Your assessment of the Edison softball program is correct in that they have a number of good young players. Not to take away from the outstanding freshman they brought in...but the returning sophomores and juniors have stepped up a notch this year. Most of the seniors have found a new purpose this year as well. It is like a different squad from last year. Defensively the Chargers have sophomore pitcher Allyson Hecht who has shown great in the last three games with 28 K's, 9 hits, 2 shut outs and a current ERA of 0.33. Junior pitcher Jesscia Reichner has a great start as well with her first three games with 11 K's, 11 hits, 2 shut outs and a 0.00 ERA.
Great defense is behind both of these pitchers, most notably senior Jessica Hall at 3b and a very fast outfield. The season is early and we can only wait and see how it all shakes out. But Edison is showing stronger than anyone had predicted...and I agree the Sunset league predictions may have to be rethought.
PS. Courtney Gonzales is a junior not a senior as referenced in your writing. Be sure on your facts. And I don't think anyone has been blocked by her...there is plenty of room for two catchers on a team. And both freshman are getting good playing time.
Regarding top underclassmen to watch: From Westminster High, watch for Deven Carbajal, freshman in the Varsity club. Very aggressive, and fast, she is coming into the program with 2 years of baseball under her belt, and is a centerfielder that can make a play at any base!
Does anyone pay any attention to Marisa Bast, one of the top underclassman (junior) in the county at Villa Park, and truly as good as the elite seniors in the county. She has verbally comitted to Northwestern University a NCAA powerhouse and was chased by Stanford, Notre Dame and many others. A true 5 tool player that excels in every area with a 4.4 GPA or do grades not matter anymore ? A National "Futures" Camp invitee and o by the way is hitting over .435 with 2 errors in 45 chances at shortstop. Open your eyes people.
