Boys basketball: First loss a big one for Mater Dei

March 7th, 2009, 8:10 pm · · posted by

Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 in the nation, lost to M.L. King of Riverside in the Division I-AA final Saturday at Honda Center, 71-56.

King was quicker on both ends of the floor, and the Wolves hit some big 3-pointers down the stretch, too, and also was clutch at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Mater Dei’s best player in last year’s playoffs, Andy Brown, was on the bench with his left knee wrapped, just a couple of weeks post-surgery for a torn ACL. Would the Monarchs have won with Brown. No way to know. But Mater Dei would be a better team with Andy Brown.

Mater Dei is 31-1, MLK is 27-2. Both will be in the CIF Southern California Regionals next week.

Couldn’t have happened to a better team. They got out worked.

Maybe King will get some respect now. This is their 2nd SS CIF title in a row (they won last year too). Go Wolves!

  • Richard says:

It looks like their national championship dream is done. But, they still can win another state title. Maybe!!! Can you say “over-rated”?

  • Just a fan says:

No one has liked losing to Mater Dei this year, but one thing I know for sure is they are nice kids that have never jumped on a public forum to bash the other teams they beat.. Show some integrity and give them a break. After all they are only human.

All of the MD players should be proud.
30-0 is an INCREDIBLE run for any high school team with such a tough schedule, keep your heads up and focus on keeping that state title.

Congratulations to the M.L. King players, you really proved yourselves tonight. Good luck in the rest of your season.

  • keeping it real says:

Their average margin of victory this year was 30.2 points. That’s really classy of MD. They don’t deserve any respect.

A blind squirel finds a nut once an a while…

a team loses one game and they think its a total failure. MLK got lucky tonight and just showed and thought it was a backyard basketball game and fouling left and right and the refs swallowed their whistle and forgot their blind sticks.

    state here we come

  • bball fan says:
