It’s a wild(card) and wet Tuesday as the the CIF playoffs get started. Some matches to watch today:
Tesoro at Huntington Beach (3pm)
The Titans upset Mission Viejo, 1-0, in its league finale. Tesoro finished league winners of three of four to earn a wildcard entry into the postseason. The Oilers earned the Sea View’s No. 3 seed, beating out Northwood after rallying in the final four games of league.
Neither team is exactly an offensive force, but both play solid defense and have spent their respective league seasons facing some of the county’s top teams. This one has PK’s written all over it. The winner gets No. 2 Los Alamitos on Thursday.
JSerra at Royal of Simi Valley (3pm)
The Lions received an at-large berth out of the Trinity after finishing fourth. Royal is the Miramonte’s League No. 4 team. The winner gets a crack at No. 1 seed Mission Viejo. The biggest obstacle for JSerra to overcome might be the long bus ride up to Royal.
Glendora at Laguna Hills (3pm)
The Hawks finished third in the Pacific Coast League while Glendora is the at-large team from the Sierra League. The winner faces Chaminade (No. 2 team in Mission League). It’s a respectable draw for a wildcard game. Usually the winner will play a No. 1 seed in the first round, but with a No. 2 team waiting, the winner of this game could reach the second round of the playoffs and be playing next week.
