San Clemente’s victory against Mission Viejo, 1-0, on Wednesday, was coach Michael Pronier’s 500th game with the Tritons.
Pronier, who graduated from SCHS, took over the program in 1987-88.
His coaching career began well, as Pronier led the Tritons to a 9-1-1 preseason record.
Then the team started South Coast League play, and lost all 10 games. Pronier called it a rude awakening.
“It was a lesson in humility,” Pronier said. “It was a great learning experience for me. That’s how it all started.”
When he began he felt like he would coach for about five seasons then move on. However, Pronier said every few years a team comes along and re-energizes him.
“I was a little burnt out five or six years ago,” he said, “but then a group of kids got me fired up. Since then we have been on a great run. We’ve taken second four years in a row. It’s motivation of trying to win and make kids successful that keep me going.”
Pronier’s career record stands at 228-171-101. He said he thinks a lot about the ties, more than he does the wins or losses. He said early on in his career, the South Coast was so strong, that earning ties was a big accomplishment for his team.
“I look back at think did I coach wins into ties, or did I coach losses into ties,” he said. “That’s what I reflect on.
“When you look at it all, it’s hard to believe it’s gone by so quickly.”
More from the boys soccer blog:
I think it’s awesome to recognize a coach who has stuck with a program for so many years. I think you need to recognize one more though… Coach Mike Schade from Sunny Hills is currently coaching his 23rd year and to my knowledge (after years of talking to players and parents from other schools), is running one of the best boys soccer programs around. His work ethics are intense and his expectations for each player on the team are high. Definitely a coach who deserves respect from all as there is no one more fair or hard working. For a team who was expected to place 5th out of 6th in league this year, Schade knows what it takes to hold the other team off. He plays a shrewd game, which will change up often due to who the opponent may be. That’s how prepared he is EVERY time. In league, the Lancers have only conceded 2 goals.
Coach Schade lives and breathes Sunny Hills Soccer 24/7 each day of the year and I think you should do a write up on him… but wait till after the next 3 games! He will be way too focussed on getting through league in a top spot, which looks to be promising!

There about 4-5 coaches who have been at there school for 20 years.
Pronier, Schade, Sjobom of El Toro, Keno at Esperanza and Silva at Saddleback.
Mike Schade is a classy guy who works tirelessly for the kids. He runs a great summer league and also the NOCC Tournament over the Christmas break. His teams are well coached and tactically solid. Sunny Hills is fortunate to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable coach. Coach Schade is also a Servite graduate – kudos to him!
