SANTA ANA – Rafi Balikcioglu sprinted down the field in the final minute of Wednesday’s Trinity League game at Mater Dei, trying one final time to tie the game for Servite.

But just as he was about to dribble into the box, a Monarch defender came sliding in with a perfect tackle. The No. 6 Friars (11-4-2, 3-2-1) were denied once again.

Defense won this game for No. 9 Mater Dei (11-2-4, 4-1-1). Well, that and a goal from Scott Robertson in the 13th minute.

The forward took a pass from Matt Padilla and then used a few nifty moves to swerve around a couple of Friars before he fired home the game-winning goal in this 1-0 triumph.

“This is a huge win. It is the biggest win of the season for us,” Mater Dei coach Andy Thomas said. “The performance today was everything that we asked for. Everyone really stepped it up.

“It was like a championship game for us because that is what Servite is. It’s a rivalry. And as expected they were organized and excellent, and we had to bring everything we had.”

  • HAHAHA says:

SERVITE LOSES AGAIN! WHY ARE THEY RANKED 6TH??

Damian, everyone here, including you, knows if mater dei lost to two teams ranked lower than them, that they would move out of top ten. Same to Jserra, so why is it that Servite loses again and they are ranked higher than Jserra and Mater dei?

    It’s ridiculous Damian.
You should have some common sense.
And you should hav been at the Esperanza-Fountain Valley game today, even without Austyn Caudillo the aztecs SHUTOUT fountain valley at fountain valleys feild. They deserve to be moved up as well as Jserra and Mater dei

ESPERANZA, JSERRA, and MATER DEI ALL DESERVE TO BE RANKED IN THE TOP 6 OR 5 IN THE OC!

    Why don’t you see it?

  • Damian Dottore, OCVarsity says:

Thanks!!! It’s fixed. And the right guy is now scoring the goal. I misread the roster. There are numbers next to the names that I realized now don’t correspond to the jerseys.. Oh, and HAHAHA I agree with you, Mater Dei, JSerra and Esperanza are among the top 6 in the county! Next week’s rankings will reflect that. I am almost certain.

    Damian
Its Scott Robertson in the picture. And he is a sophmore not a junior. Thanks

  • Pundit says:

I just came up with a moniker for the malady that annually afflicts Servite Soccer.

Let’s call it the “Servite Swoon”.

It has a ring to it don’t ya think?

  • Luca Toni says:

Pundit i agree, Servite are not good and its painful to read this article because it basically only reflects Servite “Swoon” and their excuses…
Good Job to Mater Dei Today. Friday will be an interesting one with Mater Dei v J Serra.

  • Pundit says:

Credo and ServiteHooligan have gone missing. Funny how that works. No chest pounding and talk of shutout streaks any longer.

I am still waiting for the excuse for last night’s loss. Was the ball over-inflated?

Anybody besides me detect who the Servite nemesis’ have been all season?

    Sophomores!

  • SJCman says:

Servites star players had pneumonia thats why they lost…. hahaha
That is their excuse for losing to Mater Dei
