Another intense battle between Orange Coast League rivals ended without a winner.
Junior Natalie Argueta scored the game-tying goal with less than 30 seconds remaining, as Costa Mesa and Estancia played to a 2-2 tie Tuesday evening at Estancia High.
The teams played to a 1-1 tie on Jan. 8.
Sophomore Alissa Schaefer’s goal with less than 15 minutes remaining gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead that they held until the final sequence of the game, when Argueta managed to get the ball into the net after a great crossing pass from senior Kristina Roche.
WIth the tie, the Mustangs remain in sole possesion of first place at 8-5-7; 3-0-2; while the Eagles are now 8-7-4; 2-0-3.
More details from this game to come.
I call for a third meeting between these two with special penalty shot rules.
This game is one of the best I have watched but it was clear to me that Estancia dominated and should have been the winnners. Poor ref judgment was made at the end which caused the mustangs second goal.
I would personally like to see a rematch…
One of the most competitive and well played games that I have had the pleasure of covering this season.
Each team played well, with many wonderful passing sequences and exciting runs to the net.
Estancia did an excellent job of putting constant pressure in the attacking third, especially in the second half.
Regardless of whether or not Costa Mesa was the receipient of too much extra time at the end, they deserve credit for continuing to play through to the very end.
All participants from this game should be proud for an excellent exhibition of soccer.
