What happened: Canyon scored the golden goal a couple minutes into the second overtime and beat El Dorado, 3-2, in Century League play Tuesday afternoon at El Dorado High.
The game was tied at 1 at halftime.
Records: Canyon 13-4-2, 4-0-1; El Dorado 10-4-1, 3-2
How it looked: El Dorado coach Marc Smith said he felt Canyon control action throughout the contest. The Golden Hawks had trouble putting attacks and strong runs together, but they scored on the couple opportunities that came their way.
Canyon took a 1-0 lead 15 minutes in. El Dorado answered 5 minutes later to even it at 1. El Dorado took a 2-1 lead midway through the second half before Canyon tied it at 2 with about 10 minutes to play.
Who scored: Canyon’s Taylor Alderete gave her team a 1-0 lead after beating her defender deep in the box, then the keeper near post.
El Dorado came back on Christey Self’s goal. The Hawks played in the ball into the box, where it became free and Self knocked it in.
El Dorado went in front 2-1 on Alyssa Reardon’s goal. Off a throw-in, the ball became free at the top of the box, where Reardon put a crack on it and sent it in high left corner.
Alana Mitchem took advantage of her chance when she ripped a hard right footer inside the box. The ball went off the Hawks’ goalie and into the net to make it 2-2.
Mitchem scored the game-winner on a through ball from Sarena Granados.
League standings: It was a huge win for the Comanches, as it kept them in first place in the Century race. With a win El Dorado could have jumped into the top spot. Now the Hawks are likely to be in a three-way tie for second place (depending on the rest of today’s results).
High five to … : El Dorado sweeper Jessica Shirley-Jasper. Without her, the Hawks lose this match 5-2, that’s how important Shirley-Jasper was to her team’s defense Tuesday. Though smaller for a sweeper, she shows great instincts for being in the right spot and the toughness needed at the position.
