Boys Soccer Top 10: Mater Dei returns

January 26th, 2009, 1:06 pm · · posted by

Ok, now before I list the Top 10 for the week, I feel I need to do a bit of explaining.

After watching JSerra beat Servite on Wednesday, I was ready to move them up to No. 1. Next to Saddleback’s defeat of Trabuco Hills in the Trabuco Hills Tournament championship, that was really one of the most impressive performances that I have seen this season. But then, the Lions got shutout by Santa Margarita. The Eagles have some talent, but they have been struggling mightily this season.  So instead of being ranked No. 1, JSerra is No. 7, one spot behind Servite. How can Servite be ahead?

Well, the Friars beat Santa Margarita. I feel both Servite and JSerra will be heading up in the next couple of weeks. On Wednesday at JSerra, Servite’s goalie Chris Violas was still recovering from pneumonia. And the Frairs’ Hunter Carlson and Stepehn Donnelly were also a bit banged up. I am not making excuses for the Friars, they got beat fair and square by a better team that day.

Well, enough talk. Here’s the Top 10

1. El Toro – They tied Sea View League rival Foothill on Saturday. I just don’t think it’s right dropping a team because of a tie.

2. Saddleback – The Roadrunners have rebounded nicely from their loss to rival Santa Ana, shutting out their last two opponents: Ocean View and Segerstrom

3. La Habra – Tied Fullerton, 1-1, on Thursday, but the Highlanders’ star player, Jonathan Prieto was in Mexico because of a family matter

4. Fullerton – Proved they were among the elite, having several chances to put La Habra away on Thursday

5. Foothill – tied the No. 1 team in the county. And now that they are healthy, they just might win the Sea View League title.

6. Servite – See the note above

7. JSerra – See the note above

8. Esperanza – Gave up three unanswered goals to Marina and settled for a tie, squandering a chance to win, 3-0.

9. Mater Dei – The Monarchs are tied with the Lions and the Friars in the Trinity League, having a 3-1-1 record.

10. Woodbridge – The Warriors had a game rained out on Saturday, so they remain No. 10.

On the bubble: Valencia, Santa Ana, Anaheim, Tesoro

why isn’t valencia in the top 10 they defeated katella (
2 time cif champs) they have a better record than half of the teams here why are u hating on valencia

  • johnson says:

Katella was CIF Champs 2 years ago. Valencia do have a good team this year though. Don’t worry about rankings now as they mean nothing, worry about it in early March

  • EmpireGuy says:

Valencia will need to prove themselves against the 4-0 Loara in the league game Wednesday if they wish to get the recognition back I believe. I am also excited to see the comments related towards the Jserra Servite ranks my personal opinion my top ten would be
    1. Saddleback
    2. El Toro
    3. La Habra
    4. Jserra
    5.Servite
    6.Foothill
    7. Esperanza
    8. Mater Dei
    9. Valencia
    10. Fullerton- I have seen them play and while they are a good team i dont seem them being at par with the teams behind them

    my two cents

” I am not making excuses……” Really? The why else then bring it up?

    Don’t BS us BS’ers!

  • k15 says:

Jserra didn’t make excuses at all. They lost friday and didn’t say anything. They had a bad game. It happens to everyyone. But come on they beat servite twice. First time it was “lucky” the second time their players were “sick.” Friday was an upset. 1-0. Servites first game was an upset according to you…I mean it was 3-0..against the “stingiest defense” in the county. And second time 3-0 at half. The lions have definetely proven to at least be ranked higher than servite…

  • Damian Dottore, OCVarsity says:

As I said, I was ready to make the Lions No.1. In my opinion, they are the best team in the county, but they are young, too, and their youth might have got the best of them in the rain at Santa Margarita. Let’s see what the Lions do this week. I am sure they will move up. I am going to check them out again when they play host to mater dei on Friday.

  • Pundit says:

    Yo Damien:

You a Servite alumni? All season long it’s been Servite.

The feel good story on the recovery of the Servite players from their car accident at the season’s onset was great. But it’s been down hill ever since with the over the top reporting on Servite bordering on nauseous.

Anybody remember the game Michael Jordan played his game for the ages when dehydrated and suffering with the flu in a NBA championship series?

My take: Losers make excuses – Winners win games!

ps – Are you the Servite trainer or team physician? Or just accepting calls and listening to the excuses and qualifiers from the parents and worse getting sucked into reporting them?

Come on bro – you can do us readers so much better!

  • johnson says:

    Hey guys,

At least Servite is at #6 now, a much more accurate ranking….possibly the lowest they have ever been ranked in ocvarsity. They are getting better at this, cut Damian a break. LOL. He has been covering a ton of games this season, much better than his predecessor Miguel M in my opinion.

  • Damian Dottore, OCVarsity says:

Actually, I had them ranked No. 8 once after they lost, 3-0 to JSerra. Hey I really enjoy covering boys soccer, so I plan on going out to as many games as I can each week.

  • SJCman says:

Ok Jserra deafeated Servite twice and they are ranked higher than Jserra. haha

  • rick says:

Damian I think you made a typo, servite should be 7 and Jserra should be 6, I think you might have gotton mixed up. I mean WHO could possibly mistake that, especially when Jserra put 6 GOALS against the “stingiest” defense in only two games.
    Hahahahahahaha

Oh wait you did make that mistake.

  • johnson says:

Yeah I can’t disagree there. How could a team that is tied for first in League with the mighty Servite yet beat them convincingly twice this season be ranked lower? Damien, the people have the right to know! ha ha. All joking aside, J Serra should take it as motivation and down the Friars for a third time. Maybe, just maybe then the Servite faithful will stop posting and bow down to J Serra

el toro does not deserve the number 1 spot
