Boys soccer: Servite vs. JSerra in the The Rematch

Servite boys soccer coach Mike Lussier has watched the videotape of the Friars’ collapse against JSerra last month, and everytime he said he sees the same thing.

A team that played “really bad.”

The result: JSerra 3, Servite 0.

Any loss is frustrating for a coach, but what he said makes this one so difficult to watch at times is some of the Friars’ soccer stars didn’t play to their full potential.

“I think they underestimated JSerra. They are still new team in the league,” Lussier said. “I don’t think that will happen again.”

On Wednesday the two Trinity League powers will meet again at 3:15 p.m. at JSerra High, the winner grabbing the early advantage in the race for one of the most difficult league titles to win.

Lussier said his team isn’t out for revenge and are treating this game like any other. The No. 2 Friars (10-2-2, 2-0-1) began preparing for the No. 5 Lions (9-1-3, 2-0-1) just a couple of days ago.

“All of our games our tough in the Trinity League, and we try to take care of that opponent before moving onto the next one,” Lussier said. “We worry about that team that is in front of us, and now it’s JSerra.”

It is an interesting match up between two teams that are quite a bit different. jSerra has got a powerful offense, averaging 2.8 goals per game. The Friars, on the other hand, have some of the of the stingiest defenders in the county,  posting 10 shutouts in 14 games. The Lions’ Lussier said are a tough team to defend. They are well coached and are “highly organized and deceptive.”

Lussier said his team just had a “good scouting session” at practice, and he thinks the rematch is going to be quite low scoring.  JSerra coach Davor Fabulich believes that his Lions are going to have to step it up on defense and control the midfield. The Lions

The last time the team’s met, Servite was missing two key players, goalie Chris Violas and Eric Brunter.  Since the they returned to the Friars lineup on Dec. 12, Servite has gone 8-1-1, the only loss during that span coming to Desert Vista in the Nautical Cup.

Juan Gutierrez and Dylan Seedman, two forwards who have combined to score 18 goals for the Lions, are playing ODP soccer in Arizona right now. The two players have a game today and won’t be returning home until Wednesday morning. Both players, Fabulich said intend to play against the Friars.

“I have really like their (JSerra’s) kids,” Lussier said. “Juan is a great player.” Gutierrez and Seedman each scored a goal in the Lions’ 3-0 victory against Servite on Dec. 6.

“I just hope they don’t get hurt,” Fabulich said. “They are pretty important players for us. This game is big for us because it is on our home field. I just hope we get some support on Wednesday because this year we haven’t been getting a whole lot from out fans. This is going to be a great game.”

water polo team will be there

    mess them foools up

  • Paul Caspio says:

I wonder how Mr. Lassiter’s watching his previous loss to JSerra helped him. It appears that the result of the rematch is, once again, 3-0. The only difference is that, this time around, it is the halftime score!

  • k15 says:

3-0 at half. Then jserra subbed half the team out in 2nd half. The score would of easily doubled. 3-1 final score. Hope jserra finally gets some credit. Servite couldn’t hang with jserra. Jserras toughest game so far in league was mater dei..

  • CFwddad says:

I saw the game today…I mean JSerra was classy in routing the friars. And Im a MD fan………..boy 3-0 JSerra at half…. JSerra’s coach was cool that he pulled all the starters …starting at 12mins to go…finishing with two benches….with 4 mins. Can you say “route”….

  • ServitesHooligan says:

Yeah JSerra was real classy starting two shoving matches in their box, one resulting in a double red.

  • Pundit says:

JSerra is a year ahead of schedule with the real talent on this team juniors and sophomores. Not to toot my own horn but I believe I was the first to call them out as a team to watch when no one else was paying them any mind. ( Probably about the time OC Varsity had SMargarita ranked as No. 1)

Looks like the shutout studs of Servite finally saw some real Academy level finishers. Imagine that. Was it Credo or ServiteHooligan that was pounding his chest and talking about how Defense/GKeeping wins championships?

To OC Varsity – Think we can we backburner the Servite hype for our tired eyes?

Congrats Lions. You are worthy of all of our respect. Down let down and finish. We now “Credo”.

  • ServitesHooligan says:

Why do people keep throwing my name into arguments with things I didn’t say? And even if I had said it, our defense/goal keeping hasn’t lost us the championship yet either so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

  • true says:

Real mature, “put that in your pip and smoke it”??

What are you five? Only a kid from a school who makes monkey noises at opposng players would say junk like that…

Face it SERVITESHOOLIGAN you got OWNED!!!!!!!!

  • Truth be told says:

I’m really not sure what all of the commotion is about. Servite is handed another lose from the Lions this season. The score once again has a 3 for JSerra. Face the facts, the lions are here to play. Why not give them the kudos that are due?

BTW, did anyone mention the fact that the Servite assistant coach, Sean Melendez was thrown out with a red card? I hope for Servites sake that he does not show up to the next game.

  • truthhh says:

servite may have not lost the championship.
but this is starting to sound old.
    3-0
    3-1
a championship with these two teams should be similar.
