January 19th, 2009, 6:19 pm · · posted by

As league play enters it’s second full week for many teams, here is a look at the latest county top ten.

1. San Clemente (16-2-1; 2-0-1): After a win and a tie last week, the Tritons are now undefeated in their last 10 games (9-0-1).

2. Aliso Niguel (13-1-2; 1-1-1): Tuesday’s showdown with San Clemente could go a long way in determining how the South Coast League is won.

3. Los Alamitos (12-2-4; 3-0): The Griffins look to extend their eight-game unbeaten streak with home games against Marina and Edison.

4. Esperanza (14-2-1, 2-1): The senior duo of Courtney Garcia and Kylie Bono has combined for 23 of the Aztecs’ 46 goals this season.

5. Mission Viejo (8-3-7, 2-0-1): The Diablos will look to stay tied for first place in the South Coast League with games against Capistrano Valley and Tesoro this week.

6. Mater Dei (9-2-4; 3-0-0): Big win over Santa Margarita was the third time during four game winning streak that the Monarchs have not allowed a goal.

7. Trabuco Hills (8-4-2; 2-0-1): After shutting out Foothill, Mustangs will face Northwood Thursday in a battle for first place.

8. Northwood (8-6-3; 3-0): Six straight wins catapult the Timberwolves into this week’s rankings.

9. Tesoro (5-3-8; 0-1-2): After two ties last week, the Titans (one goal in three league games) will look to get their offense going.

10. Santa Margarita (7-6-4; 1-1): With their momentum halted in last week’s loss to Mater Dei, Eagles look to rebound with games against Orange Lutheran and JSerra this week.

Others receiving consideration: 11. Capistrano Valley (12-5-1; 1-1-1); 12. El Toro (8-4-2; 0-2-1); 13. Marina (6-4-4; 2-1); 14. Canyon (11-4-2; 2-0-1); 15. Sunny Hills (15-2-2; 3-0)

Wait.. didn’t Mission beat Aliso Niguel? And tie with San Clemente.. shouldn’t they move up?

  • Jason Eichelberger, OC Varsity.com says:

    Dear KiKi,

Thanks for the comment. Mission Viejo did beat Aliso Niguel in the first game of the league season and they moved up from 9th to 5th. My reasoning for this week’s rankings was that all three South Coast League teams in the top 5 (Mission Viejo, Aliso Niguel, and San Clemente) all went 1-0-1 last week , so to move any of them up would have been tough. I think this week will be a great indication as to how the teams stack up in that league, with Aliso Niguel and San Clemente playing Tuesday, and Mission Viejo battling Capistrano Valley and Tesoro this week.

    Jason,

Just wondering what your opion of Santa Ana Valley is? I am suprised they did not recieve any votes.

Thanks JAson for the comment.. Mission beat Capo …??

    Dear so cal soccer fan,

Thanks for the comment. After watching Santa Ana Valley play, I can say that they are a very solid team. They attack on offense really well, and have good speed and ball tracking ability on defense.

With that said, It’s very difficult to say exactly how they would match up with some of the county’s better teams. Teams such as Aliso Niguel, San Clemente, Los Alamitos and Esperanza are not only stacked with talent, but are physical and have depth with their offensive and defensive attacks, something that could be a huge advantage in a potential match-up with the Falcons.

Even Division II and III teams such as Canyon and Sunny Hills are not only talented, but have multiple options on offense along with depth on the defensive end.

Is it unreasonable to think that the Falcons couldn’t hang with these teams? Certainly not. I think it would be great to see Santa Ana Valley play against some of these teams in the preseason, which would be a good chance to see how they measure up.

As for the rest of the season, the Falcons should continue to enjoy success and be a force come playoff time.

I think it would be great if they could play some Division I and II teams in the county in the preseason. It would be
