January 17th, 2009, 4:42 pm · · posted by

Another busy week of soccer action from around the county has come to close, and with it, a number of memorable games and performances.

Here is a look at some of the highlights, with five individuals and teams that stood out.

Five Standouts of the Week:

Lindsay Brown (Mater Dei): Senior midfielder scored two of the Monarchs three goals this week, including game winner Thursday against Santa Margarita.

Katie Donahue (St. Margaret’s): The freshman forward was a big reason for the Tartans undefeated week, as she recorded a hat trick and an assist in the Tartans 5-0 win over Brethren Christian Tuesday, while assisting both goals in St. Margret’s 2-0 triumph over Oxford Academy.  She is now tied for second in the county with 11 assists. (tops among all freshmen)

Kirstin McCullough (Kennedy): The senior midfielder had a hand in every goal the Fighting Irish scored in their two league victories over Cypress and Katella, tallying a total of four goals and four assists.

Jordan Nelson (Pacifica): The senior defender not only committed to LMU this week, but went out and scored five goals in two games, including a hat trick Thursday against Cypress.

Lauren Roblero (Sunny Hills): Two goals this week for the senior forward, including the game winner in Thursday’s 1-0 win over La Habra. Roblero has now scored in all three of Sunny Hills’ league victories.
Five Teams of the Week:

Brea Olinda: The Ladycats went 2-0, including a big 5-3 win over El Dorado, who entered the contest winning nine of the first 12 games this season.

Mater Dei: Two wins last week and four overall for the Monarchs, who appear to be hitting their stride.

Northwood: The Timberwolves’ remarkable run continues, as they have now won six straight, opening league play with two shut outs in three games. During that stretch, they have outscored their rivals 8-1.

Los Alamitos: The Griffins undefeated week included their thrilling 2-1 OT win at Esperanza. In their last eight games, the Griffins have allowed only two goals.

University: The Trojans posted their first league victory since 2007, coming from behind in the second half to surprise Corona del Mar 2-1.

TRABUCO HILLS REMAINS UNSCORED UPON THROUGH LEAGUE

The #9 ranked Trabuco Hills Mustangs improved their record to 9-4-1 when they defeated the Foothill Knights in Sea View league action this afternoon. After playing to a 0 – 0 tie in the first half, the Trabuco Hills Mustangs came out energized and fired-up to start the second half; the result being 3 goals scored. Senior forward – Sarah Halverson #3 scored the first of two goals when she caught a ball mid-flight which had been sent across the field from Senior left outside midfielder – Taylor Osborn #7 (3rd assist of the season) and drove it into the back of the net from about 14 yards out, at the 49th minute of play. The Mustangs continued to pressure in the Knights field of play when at the 72nd minute, Halverson received a through-ball from teammate Senior center midfielder – Jackie Samis #18 (team co-leading 4th assist) took a shot that was deflected by a Knight defender, recollected the loose ball and lofted it over the goalies head and into the net for her second score of the match (6th goal of the season). Sophomore center midfielder – Natalie Warner #4 added some additional security at the 77th minute of play when she took a Halverson (2nd assist of the season) corner kick and headed the ball past the goalie for the score (2nd goal of the season).

The Mustangs recorded their third straight shut-out and remain unscored upon through league play. The Mustang defense led by team co-captain Senior sweeper/outside defender – Kirstyn Magyar #16, Sophomore outside defender Shareen Najjar #19, Sophomore outside defender – Jessica Mandarich #22 and Junior defensive midfielder (Stopper) – Alexes Huerta #23 held the Knights to only 4 shots throughout the match. Additional defensive support came from Sophomore defender – Sam Fillon #24 (who normally starts at outside midfielder) when Magyar was moved up top to help spark the Mustang offense. Magyar resumed her defensive role once the Mustangs put a 1 up on the score board. Defensive efforts also came from versatile Senior – Ariana Lagerborg #13, who played both the sweeper and stopper positions throughout much of the match.

The Mustangs out shot the Knights throughout the match by a 22 – 4 margin. 7 of the Mustang shots came in the first half. Their best opportunity in the first half came at approximately the 7th minute of play when Osborn sent a left footed struck ball across the field from the right corner flag to Senior forward – Dani Benton #12 who was waiting directly in front of the goal post, 4 yards deep, and pushed the ball past the goalie for what would have been the first goal of the game, if not for an off sides call by the referee.
Freshman goalie – Kassidie Stade #0 finished the match with 2 saves on 4 shots. The Mustangs who face a tough Northwood team next, are led by Head Coach Sarah Trost and Assistant Coach Megan Konishi.
