Here are 3 matches to keep an eye on today:
Western at Anaheim (Orange League, 3:15pm)
Anaheim is 10-2-3 and tied with with Western at 2-0 for first in league. It would seem like the Pioneers will have their hands full pulling off the upset.
Anaheim tied La Habra earlier this season and lost to Fullerton, 2-0, but aren't mentioned much when it comes to other teams in the county.
Servite at Santa Margarita (Trinity League, 3:15pm)
It seems like there's been enough hype for this match to sell pay-per-views. To say this match will be hot and heavy isn't doing it justice.
Bragging rights are bigger in some matches than others. They don't get any bigger than this one.
Here's hoping the refs can control the match and keep it clean.
Mission Viejo at San Clemente (South Coast League, 5 pm)
A rivalry game in its own right, there's no love lost between these two squads. The Diablos opened league with a 1-0 victory Aliso Niguel.
That was a big win for the Diablos. San Clemente tied Tesoro 2-2 to start league and defending home field is crucial in any league.
More from the boys soccer blog:
I disagree the Servite vs. SM will be all that good of a game.
In year's past, this was a great rivalry. To hype it this year is a disservice to your readers. SM is really down this year unlike any other SM team in recent memory. SM's anemic offensive production won't even test Servite's Violas.
Predict: Servite 2 - SM 0 (BT will make a few saves to keep it from being a blow-out)
Why is the sm-servite game being hyped? Is this a joke? SM is no where near the quality as last season, servite vs. jserra will be a much stronger and better game, anyone disagree?
And if no one has noticed, Esperanza won again with three games in a row including today when they beat los alamitos AT LOS AL yet again. And with FV slippin up this puts espy and fv in first place with espy having momentum.
Can anyone say top ten for Esperanza?
I believe so!
mission viejo-san clemente game is ending soon i believe, that should be a good matchup. And kudos to guy above me with the mighty ducks name, classic, and also gordan bombay is right, i just saw the score of the los al game and I am impressed with their comeback from losing first game of league to winning three strong league games in a row especially with the los al win at los al's home field, congrats esperanza soccer, should see you back in top ten soon.
So is the paint dry from the SM vs. Servite match? Or did the parents of the two teams add a little interest? I just saw the posted 2 - 0 result - am I good or what? Let me re-phrase that: Is SM bad or what?
Good to see OCV reporting on a game in SOUTH oc (San Clemente vs. MViejo. The jab on the OCR travel per diem must of freed up some funds. Looks like the story of the San Clemente Goalie going on the IR worked sand bagged well against the Diablos. Law of averages at work?
Unfortunately - work load prevented me witnessing any games today.
Next up Friday - JSerra vs. Bosco in a Non-League game (hey - I am just quoting from the OCV schedule!)
Big match on a small field? WTF?
P, you were right (2-0) but for wrong reasons. Did u know that SM would resort to playing the match on a U-14 sized grass field? I'm surprised SM didn't break out the small sized youth goals. Smart gamesmanship or poor sportsmanship? Your call.
Playing on a half sized grass field actually made the match more competitive than it otherwise should have been. Had the match been played on the regulation sized SM turf field SM normally plays on (when they have abundant speed and talent) the score might have been 5-0 or more. The smallish field made every set piece an unchallenged shot on goal opportunity and as a result, SM was able to test the Servite keeper on several occaisions. If SM was hoping for the usual home field referee advantage, they were sorely mistaken as the ref's did a relatively decent job and let the boys play.
Where have you been Invictus? SM has been playing on that turf field forever. (the one with box goals right?)
What's the matter - the ability of the Servite players to play in tight space with pressure too tough for the Servite team? Out of the "high school" comfort zone?
Sorry I missed it. As previous posters have pointed out - Servite fans are always finding something to complain about. And now they complain when they win(d)?
Correction: SM has been playing on that GRASS field forever.
