Sunny Hills water polo standout Brittany Cornwell returned last week from post concussion syndrome but we can just count Tuesday’s match against Fullerton as her real return. The senior center scored nine goals in a 17-10 victory against the Indians.

Great to see Cornwell back. She is a great kid and she is the heart and soul of the SHHS girls polo team. Coach Nighswonger knows that. Now he has to convince the rest of his team to buy into Brittany’s leadership on the squad. This team has talent but unless they get past the self promotion and “me” before “we” mentality they will not make it past the semi-finals again this year. It would be great to see SHHS win it because they have all the pieces this year to win. Let’s just see if the team rallys behind Cornwell and Coach.
It’s great to see Brittnay back in the water. The team has heart and soul with or without Brittnay. They proved that during pre-season by winning many games and even a tournament without her. Was she missed? Of course. Any player would be. Coach Nighswonger shouldn’t have to convince anyone on the team who the leaders are. You lead by example, not by someone telling you to. Is Brittnay a leader? Absolutely! However, many of the girls have stepped up and have taken on the leadership role. There are “NO” self promoters on the team. They wouldn’t have as many victories if they had a “ME” before “WE” attitude. It takes commitment, teamwork and a great coach to achieve what the team has done so far this year. Brittnay will only add to the already cohesive group of Sunny Hills water polo players. You can’t rally behind one teammate and a coach with expectations of winning. Let’s rally behind the team instead of selected individuals. It’s worked well so far. Don’t you think???
I totally agree with Water Polo Fan. I am a big fan of SH and think they have been having a great year so far. They have so many weapons and are very well coached. Hopefully they will press forward and continue to play as well as they did against LH. That game was an impressive TEAM victory!
Polo Fan:
I agree with alot of what you say. The team is off to a great start and they are definately winning….True. They also have a solid and experienced coach….Very true. They have talent…absolutely. I am a SH fan too. I went there many years ago. I want them to win. I am a Lancer. However, this team needs to stop worrying about individual accomplishments, goals scored, minutes played, headlines, etc… and start focussing in on winning for the long term. Remember…they have had several winning seasons throughout the years but….NO CIF Championship to show for it ( Guys team…much different story…I won’t get into that history though). Didn’t they have a perfect season a couple of yrs ago? Didn’t they almost win last yr? This year could be the year if the team…..TRULY unites. Every great team eventually must work within a leadership structure and this yr….it’s got to be coach and Cornwell. The team needs to respect that. Listen…I am on your side. I am simply trying to light a fire. There is no “I” in team. Girls…let’s win it this year!!
LOL…..no really LOL OC polo dude, don’t drag Cornwell into this and divide the team. She is a great kid and thats why you should keep your thoughts to yourself. You are doing more damage then good. You obviously don’t have a clue to what you are talking about. If the team were to follow the lead of your idea of the perfect team, we wouldn’t have a team. Who was thinking of “I” when she decided to take the summer break, winter break, and most the tournaments off? Is that the lead we need to follow?… What actual lead are you talking about? Do you even realize how much better Cornwell would have been benficial for the TEAM if she put in the time like the rest of the girls? (Talent plus hardwork = respect/leader) We’d be unstopable and we would not be having this conversation, because she would have EARNED the respect of the team and with that you become a leader. The lead roll is EARNED, not given. Get you priorities straight.
