Boys soccer: Tobolski's 5 items of interest (Week 2)

January 13th, 2009, 10:55 pm · 1 Comment · posted by Chris Tobolski, OCVarsity.com

Here are five notes that caught my attention:

1. Barons rolling: Fountain Valley is 3-0 and in first place in the Sunset. Barons have beat Newport Harbor (2-1), Marina (5-2) and Los Alamitos (3-1).
Barons had an up and down preseason, but 10 goals in three games equals high-powered offense.
Fountain Valley faces Esperanza on Monday, with Edison before that. Can they go 5-0 to start league?

2. Laguna Beach all tied up: The Breakers were considered the favorite in the Orange Coast League. However, they have started with two ties.
Their first came against Godinez (2-2) and their second against Calvary Chapel (1-1). With eight games remaining, plenty of soccer remains.
But Laguna Beach missed chance to get off to quick start.

3. Tritons lose goalie: Senior keeper Andrew Cuchessi goes down for at least two weeks. That's four league games, or at least 40 percent of the Tritons South Coast run.
What will this do for San Clemente's hopes. Sophomore goalie Max Phillips is the other keeper listed on the team's roster.
A sign of how the Tritons will respond comes Wednesday when they host Mission Viejo.

4. Trinity League shake up: It's bound to happen this week. Four key games where Santa Margarita faces Servite and Mater Dei, the Monarchs play JSerra and Servite takes on Orange Lutheran.
So much can happen here, and that's what makes it interesting. The Eagles arguably have the best chance to make a statement.
Beat Servite and Mater Dei in the same week in any sport is a worthy feat.

5. Until they meet again: After El Toro and Trabuco Hills tied at 1, each team's path until the rematch will be key in determing the league race.
Who will gain the advantage by the next meeting? Or when the next time they collide, could the league title be on the line?
Based on the county rankings, No. 5 Trabuco Hills has to gain confidence tying No. 2 El Toro.

Do any players play on these teams? Why don't we give the kids some credit? I'll get my news from Orange County Soccer News, thank you!
