League play got underway last week and it didn't come without its moments.
Here are some happenings that I took note of.
Capistrano Valley 4, Dana Hills 0: The Cougars are the South Coast League X-factor and showed why in this victory. Not a big surprise Capo won, but 4-0? That is. Dana Hills beat a solid Thousands Oaks team in the Excalibur tournament.
Do the Cougars have what it takes to survive schedule and make playoffs? It won't surprise me if it happens, after this league-opening performance.
Northwood 4, Woodbridge 1: I'm I surprised? Check out where I predicted the Warriors would finish. Woodbridge entered the match 6-1-1, but the T-Wolves showed the Sea View race just isn't El Toro and Trabuco Hills with this victory. Again, it's not shocking by any means Northwood won, but 4-1 is like 56-7 in football. It's not even close.
How Northwood follows this result up this week (vs. El Toro on Tuesday, at Huntington Beach on Saturday) is important for their playoff positioning.
Canyon 1, Brea Olinda 1: The Comanches are the defending Empire League champion and had a chance to make a statement on the road to open league. The Wildcats earning a tie in this was is surprising to me. I had Canyon as the hands-down favorite in this league.
Santa Margarita 6, Rosary 2: The Eagles winning this game isn't a big deal, but scoring six goals is, especially for a Santa Margarita team that's been looking to finish more often. You factor in that Mater Dei beat Rosary, 2-0, and does the Eagles-Monarchs match up look like it favors the Eagles on paper?
If so, that's surprising.
