Each week we will take a close look at top-ranked Mater Dei on its road to a possible undefeated season.
Here is our first installment:
The plan: To see if the Monarchs can go undefeated. They lost once last season.
The scoop: Mater Dei, the top-ranked team in the universe, opened league play with a 101-71 victory over rival Servite on Friday.
The “super five” all scored in double figures. David Wear had 22, Travis Wear 20, Gary Franklin and Tyler Lamb each tossed in 14 and Andy Brown had 11.
The star off of the bench was Michael Pierce, who scored six.
Next up: The Monarchs will play host to JSerra on Wednesday and is at Santa Margarita Friday. (Remember their meetings last season?)
On the horizon: We’re all under the impression that nobody in the county will be able to challenge Coach Gary McKnight’s crew (or at least I am), so circle these dates on your calendar:
Jan. 19 vs. Whitney Young of Illinois in Massachusetts
Feb. 7 vs. St. Benedict’s of New Jersey at the Nike Extravaganza
These appear to be the only two obstacles that could keep the Monarchs from going undefeated in the regular season and the CIF playoffs. Yes, I’ve already awarded them the CIF title.

Seems as though Mater Dei has another outstanding team.Good luck in the rest of their season.
