Here's a look at some of the players and teams that stood out during Thursday's action.
Thursday’s Five Standouts
Sierra Mack (Fullerton): Senior became the county goal scoring leader, adding four more to her toal of 17 to lead the Indians to an 8-0 win over Buena Park.
Jordan Nero (Fullerton): You know that your team is having a good offensive day when a hat trick makes you only the second leading goal scorer of the day. Kudos to Nero regardless.
Mariah Nogueira (Marina): Senior started league with a bang by recording a hat trick to lead Marina over Fountain Valley 3-1.
Alejandra Noria (Savanna): Helped lead the Rebels to an 8-0 non league win over Saddleback by recording a hat trick.
Dani Weatherholt (San Clemente): Freshman’s first career goal was a game winner in the Tritons' 1-0 triumph over Tesoro.
Thursday’s Top Five Teams:
Beckman: The Patriots opened the Pacific Coast League with a 2-0 win over Irvine, their fourth win in the last five games. In that stretch, they have outscored their opposition 19-2.
Capistrano Valley: After struggling a bit during the Excalibur Tournament, the Cougars answered back with an impressive 4-0 shut over Dana Hills. It marked the fifth time this year the Capistrano Valley has scored four goals or more in a game. With 12 wins in 16 games, the Cougars should be a force in the always difficult South Coast League.
Mission Viejo: It may be a stretch to say that this is one of the biggest wins of the season to date, but the Diablos’ 1-0 triumph over Aliso Niguel should give them a world of confidence heading into their next matchup with a league heavyweight, which comes Tuesday at San Clemente.
Sunny Hills: The Lancers defeated a very good Troy team on the road in a game that certainly felt like one that could have been played in March. Both teams left everything they had out on the field and their Jan 29th rematch at Sunny Hills should be another great battle.
Trabuco Hills: The Mustangs’ impressive roll continued Thursday, as they shut out a very talented El Toro team at El Toro. Since losing to Dana Hills 1-0 on Dec. 16th, Trabuco Hills is 4-1-1
Fact of the Day: Of the 14 games that were shutouts on Thursday, 11 were by two goals or more.
I've never written before, and don't even know if I'm doing so in the right spot, but I feel compelled to mention that I think that freshman Gianna Lowery (Capo Valley) should have earned a spot as one of your five standouts after a hat trick in her first ever league game on Thursday. I'm happy for the other freshman you have listed. It's great to see these young ladies with the confidence to take the shots against some of the best (many of them older) defensive players and goalies in OC. Way to go!
