TRINITY LEAGUE PREVIEW

LEAGUE FAVORITE

Mater Dei: The Monarchs are ranked No. 1 in the county, No. 1 in the state and No. 4 in the nation. It will be an upset if any team in the Trinity League gets within 25 points of the Monarchs. They are that good.

PROJECTED LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Kaleena Lewis, Mater Dei: The 6-0 sophomore is a pure scorer with loads of skills and moves and she’s only getting better. She can drive to the basket or step out and knock down 3-pointers. She is a nightmare for defenses.

OTHERS TO WATCH

Jordan Adams (Mater Dei, Fr., 6-0, G); Skye Atchley (Orange Lutheran, Sr., 5-8, F); Kimmi Cordova (Orange Lutheran, Sr., 5-7, G); Liz Hartnett (Rosary, Sr., 5-9, F); Kathryn Haugen (Mater Dei, Sr., 5-8, G); Allie Ivar (JSerra, So., 5-8, F); Elise Lorenz (Santa Margarita, Jr., 6-3, F); Emily McCoy (Rosary, Sr., 5-6, G); Madison McKenney (Santa Margarita, Jr., 5-6, G); Carly Meyer (Rosary, Sr., 6-0, C); Mya Olivier (Mater Dei, Sr., 6-1, F); Jade Reed (JSerra, So., 6-1, F); Nichole Sandoval (JSerra, Sr., 5-5, G); Taylor Spears (Mater Dei, Fr., 5-8, G); Alexyz Vailotama (Mater Dei, So., 6-1, F); Melissa Zornig (Santa Margarita, Jr., 5-9, G)

TEAM ON THE RISE

Santa Margarita: The Eagles played one of the toughest nonleague schedules in the county this season, so it’s no surprise now that they have found their roles and are playing well together. Beating Mater Dei is a huge long shot, but taking second place and making a strong run in the playoffs appears to be a real possibility. Melissa Zornig, who shared the league’s player of the year award with Kaleena Lewis last season, is back for the Eagles.

TEAM UNDER CONSTRUCTION

JSerra: The Lions start one senior, one junior, two sophomores and a freshman and they have a young bench. JSerra is very young, but the Lions have a lot of talent and they will have their moments this season. Look for big things from the Lions in the future.

TOP GAMES

Santa Margarita at Rosary, Monday; Mater Dei at Santa Margarita, Jan. 19; Santa Margarita at Orange Lutheran, Jan. 20; Rosary at Santa Margarita, Jan. 29; Santa Margarita at Mater Dei, Feb. 3; Orange Lutheran at Santa Margarita, Feb. 5.

Have to say there would be more of an argument for Zornig to be POY in this league for what she has done for her team – Lewis is one of ten players on MD that can play they are really a club team but the way their league votes she would probably get it as it is the team in first place who gets the MVP unlike the other leagues where the coaches gang up on each other to get their own player and not who’s usually deserving – that happened with Troy years ago the other coaches would not give Troy the MVP as they hated the fact that Kiernan got his players from out of town.

thanks for the comfirmation on troy tech nashfan. and its probably still going on . whebn is cif going to wake up about magnate programs being used not for acedemics but sports.

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

glass half full: Zornig is a stud. Lewis is a stud. That is going to be a hard choice in the Trinity. If I had a OCVarsity Fantasy League, Lewis and Zornig would be two of my top choices.

  • efan says:

Problem with that Carlos they’d both want outscore the other as they both like to shoot first – now if you want to win I’d want to go with the players who can shoot and score and also pass and defend.
