Boys soccer: Tobolski's three matches of the day

January 9th, 2009, 10:21 am · Post a Comment · posted by Chris Tobolski, OCVarsity.com

Here are my matches to watch for today as league play continues

Marina at Fountain Valley, 3pm (Sunset League)

The Vikings upset No. 9 Esperanza on Wednesday and now take on the Barons, who are on the cusp of the county's top 10 poll.

With a victory against Fountain Valley, does Marina establish itself as the Sunset League favorite? It's one note of interest in the match.

The Barons opened league with a 2-1 win over Newport Harbor and can get revenge against the Vikings.

Marina beat the Barons, 1-0, in tournament play in December.

No. 2 El Toro vs. No. 6 Trabuco Hills, 3:15 pm (Sea View League)

A top 10 match up to start league - one of three on the day, Troy-Sunny Hills and Mater Dei-Servite are the others - will go far in setting the tone for the title.

The Chargers have been as strong as any team in the preseason, but there's no doubt the Mustangs are hungry for the upset.

Capistrano Valley at Dana Hills, 3pm (South Coast League)

It seems that Aliso Niguel and San Clemente are favorites for the league title, however, the South Coast is wide open, both for the title and for the playoffs.

If the Tritons and Wolverines prove the top teams, then either the Cougars or Dolphins won't make the playoffs.

A victory in this game will help clarify the race, however early it is.
