One game in the county’s toughest league was all it took for O.C.'s top-ranked team to taste defeat for the first time this season.
Welcome to the South Coast League.
Freshman Jen Stanley scored the game’s lone goal midway through the first half, while sophomore Marriah Kessler stopped eight shots as No. 9 Mission Viejo slipped by No. 1 Aliso Niguel, 1-0, on Thursday at Mission Viejo High.
“This is exactly what we needed to start league play,” Diablos coach Susie Daher said.
In addition to being ranked No.1 in the county, the Wolverines (12-1-1, 0-1) entered the game ranked No. 1 in the Adidas National Winter Rankings and ESPN Rise’s winter soccer rankings.
With the victory, the Diablos (7-3-6, 1-0) snapped the Wolverines’ six-game shutout streak, becoming the first team since Buena High on Dec. 13 to put the ball in the net against Aliso Niguel.
Keeping with the theme in the South Coast League, Mission Viejo will now travel to No. 2 San Clemente on Tuesday for a game at 3:30 p.m., while the Wolverines will look to rebound when they play host to Dana Hills that same day at 5 p.m.
