What happened: The defending South Coast champion Tritons scored a second-half goal and beat No. 6 Tesoro, 1-0, on Thursday at Tesoro High.
Records: San Clemente (15-2, 1-0); Tesoro (5-3-6, 0-1)
How it looked: Tesoro started strong, challenging San Clemente's defense numerous times. On one attack, they had goalie Tiffany Corder out of the net, but the Tritons cleared.
San Clemente had a similar chance in the first half on Mackenzie Jones, but the Tritons came up dry too.
As the game progressed, the Tritons marking became quicker and Tesoro's chances slowed. The difference, San Clemente capitalized once, Tesoro didn't.

Who scored: San Clemente freshman Dani Weatherholt recorded her first career goal with just under 20 minutes left in play.
Frannie Coxe dribbled deep into the box and sent a cross toward net. A Titan defender deflected the ball, but Weatherholt was there for the rebound and score.
High-five to ...: Dani Weatherholt. What a way to score your first goal - on the road in a league opener. Sometimes it only takes one. The beauty and agony of the sport.

TRABUCO HILLS SNEAKS ONE AWAY FROM EL TORO 2 - 0
In the season opener, the #8 Trabuco Hills Mustangs sneaked away with a 2 – 0 win over the #4 El Toro Chargers. The Mustangs have now won 5 straight games. The Mustangs improved their record to 8 – 4 with the victory and also recorded their second shutout of the season.
All that was needed to secure the victory was the goal scored by Sophomore center midfielder – Natalie Warner #4 who collected the ball and squeezed one into the upper left corner of the goal from about 10yards out, after the ball had been deflected to her by her teammate at approximately the 13th minute of play. Although the Chargers outshot the Mustangs 10 – 5, stellar defense led by team co-captain Kirstyn Magyar #16, Senior sweeper – Ariana Lagerborg #13, Sopomore outside defender - Jessica Mandarich #22 and Junior defensive midfielder (Stopper) – Alexes Huerta #23 kept the Chargers from putting any balls into the net. Magyar covered the Chargers leading goal scorer - forward Bri Lopez throughout much of the contest. Although the speedy forward had opportunities to score, the Mustang defense did not allow her to penetrate to the net.
Junior goalie – Erin Wenzel #1 who started the first half recorded 2 saves on 5 shots. While Freshman goalie – Kassidie Stade #0 finished the second half of the match with 3 saves on 5 shots. Freshman outside midfielder – Aubrey Baker added a security goal in the 53rd minute of play when she swept around a Charger defender and punched the ball from 18yards out, over the Charger goalie head and into the upper right corner of the goal. The Mustangs who are to be congratulated on a well fought victory are led by Head Coach Sarah Trost and Assistant Coach Megan Konishi.
Eric:
Thanks for the update.
That's a solid win for the Mustangs and great way to start league.
Eric:
One more item.
Is it too late for me to change my prediction Trabuco will finish third? Sometimes you hit home runs, other times you strike out.
Time will tell.
Chris:
Thanks for letting me piggy-back off your well written article on the San Clemente vs. Tesoro game. It is a nice way for the Mustang players to get some kind of recognition for their efforts.
Some of the parents predict that we will win league. Hopefully, that is a home run!
One request to finish my comment.
If you take the last three Mustang games at Excalibur (all which were won on penalty kicks), Mustangs have an overall record of 8 - 4, as we beat Mission Viejo in PK's 6 - 5.
If you count those games as ties, since that is how they finished at the end of regulation, then the Mustangs are 5 - 4 - 3.
If you could have one of your staff correct in the standings, that would be much appreciated from the Mustangs.
Thanks again to you and Jason Sincerely - Eric (parent)
