January 8th, 2009, 5:57 pm · · posted by

We’re continuing the look at the top players in each class in the county. Today we look at the top 10 sophomores.

These lists have been compiled based on my observations and input from coaches and longtime soccer observers here in the county.

Do you agree with my picks? Do you disagree? Let me know what you think … and check back later in the season to see if these players finished the season as clearly the best in their class.

Lauren Young is an awesome player. Best sophmore around!

  • Walt Ambrose says:

Sir you’re right on the money with Lindsey Luke and Lauren Bohaboy.

Congtratulations to both girls. These girls stand out in the club soccer arena as well and certainly deserve to be on your top ten list.

Congratulations to all the top ten sophomore selections as well.

  • NWS says:

Torey Markowitz, a Sophomore sweeper at Tesoro is another very accomplished player with an excellent work ethic and a great understanding of the game!

  • Robert Lambros says:

I admit to being partial; but for my money the Golie for La Habra is the best!

  • Michelle says:

I notice you favor south county teams for the girls soccer picks. there are many great players in the freeway league that I think you overlook. do you ever look at any JV teams?

  • Jason Eichelberger, OC Varsity.com says:

    Hey Michelle,

Thanks for your comment. Let me know some of the players in the Freeway League that you think that I have overlooked. My goal is definitely not to favor any school or region of the county. Also, I tend to focus more on players that are currently on varsity.

  • Coach Matt says:

    Jason,

Your list’s have been an insiration for debate. I agree that many of each class are deserving of this recognition and maybe expanding to 15-20 should be given serious consideration.

In that spirit, did you have achance to see Taylor Nelson of Pacifica. She is Jordan’s sister and quite an impact player in her own right. She has 7 goals and is tied with Lauren Young and Rochelle Weerackoon.

Thanks again for recognizing these student athletes.

  • i have a ? says:

Katie Perrry was obviously overlooked. Because she is an amazing player with that ball at her feet she is skilled and quick and see’s the field like no other sophmore. She has suceeded with odp, region iv, and the national pool. Check her out she is on Capo #12

  • 1,2 hell yeah says:

mariah helmer is a very promisising sophmore on mission viejo. shes pretty much a stud

  • Kyle Norris says:

There is one Sophomore that has been overlooked that I think has had more impact on the overall team success then some of the others, and that is Megan Daniels of El Toro. She is a dyanmic player that has a tremendous natural sense of the game both offesively and defensively, not to mention the fact that you will be hard pressed to find another player that matches her speed and aggresiveness for her size. Take a look at the video on youtube and see for yourself how high she elevates for a header. I can’t wait to see her over the upcoming two years.
