SUNSET LEAGUE PREVIEW

LEAGUE FAVORITE

Los Alamitos: The Griffins likely will repeat as league champions. After Mater Dei, this might be the most athletic team in Orange County.

PROJECTED LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

James Walker, Los Alamitos: He was MVP of the KSA Tournament in Florida last month, when the Griffins won that tournament's championship. Walker, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, is a high-energy player who can score in a variety of ways.

OTHERS TO WATCH

Kyle Boswell (Edison, 6-0, Jr., G); Jacob Cheek (Los Alamitos, 6-4, Sr., F); Tim Chung (Los Alamitos, 6-3, Jr. G); Clark Evans (Los Alamitos, 6-5,Sr., F); Brendan Holmes (Marina, 6-1, Jr., G); Garrett James (Marina, 5-8, Sr., G); Jordan Levine (Esperanza, 6-3, Sr., F); Ned Lyon (Newport Harbor, 6-1, Sr., F); Max Pendergast (Edison, 6-0, Jr., G); Alex Rios (Newport Harbor, 6-6, Sr., F)

TEAM ON THE RISE

Marina: The Vikings' group of 3-point shooters, led by Holmes and James, make them a threat in any game.

TEAM UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Esperanza: The Aztecs should improve as the season progresses, but this is a very challenging league.

TOP GAMES

Los Alamitos at Marina, Jan. 21; Los Alamitos at Edison, Jan. 23; Edison at Marina, Feb. 4

Others to watch, Walker (Jr. guard) of Los Alamitos ,one of the better guards around. Also, Walker of Edison (jr., forward) and Garrity of Edison (sophomore, guard), at the top of your leaderboards, a great all around guard.
Some of the names you mentioned above havn't done much at all in preseason..how do you get your infor.?

Yes, i agree with the above post..but the poster failed to see walker of los al. was already mentioned in the report. Walker of Edison is growing into his body and with a little work can be a threat. Garrity is just a sophmore but the kid is a leader, can shoot, and has the pass first mentality, who gets his whole team involved, which i believe is the soul of a good bball player.
The Marina kids can shoot but can they take care of the ball and play defense? Are they team players, or out for individual stats? To me it seems they just jack up shots to see how many they can get, that is NOT team ball. I would like to see the kids mentioned who play Team ball first before shooting and play all around good basketball.
Rios, Lyon and Pendergast have not done a whole lot in the preseason, and are only role players at best.
Los Al. is a good example of TEAM ball, the whole team is involved, and it shows in their success.

This is typical of the Register - leave the Sunset League Preview out of the paper while printing 5 photos instead. Haven't we seen enough press and pictures of Mater Dei and the Wear brothers??

I have to ask myself, "Why do I pay for my paper to be 90% (not 100%) complete and have it suffer from a dearth of copy editors???"

  • Coach says:

Los Alamitos will win the league! They have Coaching, Athleticism, Depth and chemistry! The Coaches will make sure they do thier jobs, as each Head Coach has alot of experience!

  • The Register will be running the Sunset League basketball preview in the paper on Saturday (Jan. 10). You will be able to find the information packaged with the other high school sports coverage.

(FYI: The preview will be same one that appears above on this Web site.)

We apologize for not including the preview with the others that ran in Friday's edition of the Register.

Thanks, Brian Patterson (OCVarsity.com Web Editor)

I don't know why Brent take a shot at Marina. Just because they play an exciting up tempo game the scores from the perimeter instead of the post doesn't mean that they aren't playing team ball. They play to their strength which is the 3-point shot. I think they are 12-4 this year. So it is working for them.
