Boys basketball: Golden West League preview

GOLDEN WEST LEAGUE

LEAGUE FAVORITE

Ocean View: Annually the league's best team, the Seahawks should also be a fixture in the county top 10. They have a solid trip of guards in Anthony Brown, Avery Johnson and Billy Keller – and none of them are seniors.

PROJECTED LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Avery Johnson, Ocean View: A 6-foot-3 junior guard, Johnson was the league most valuable player as a sophomore. He is ultra-quick with good shooting range.

OTHERS TO WATCH

Anthony Brown (Ocean View, 6-6, Jr., G); Anthony Cole (Orange, 5-10, Sr., G); Julio Cruz (Santa Ana, 6-3, Sr., G); Abraham Granados (Santa Ana, 5-9, Sr., G); Mason Jones (Ocean View, 6-4, Sr., G); Billy Keller (Ocean View, 6-0, So., G); Jonathan Mendoza (5-10, Sr., G); Ryan Okwudibonye (Ocean View, 6-7, Jr., C); Berry Padilla (Orange, 6-3, Jr., F); Randy Villegas (Saddleback, 6-1, Sr., G)

TEAM ON THE RISE

Segerstrom: At a school where athletics are growing fast, the Jaguars basketball team still is building – but could grab a playoff berth as soon as this year.

TEAM UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Saddleback: The Roadrunners might be one of the league's shorter teams, but they can shoot and just might make another run at a playoff berth.

TOP GAMES

Saddleback at Santa Ana, Jan. 16; Ocean View at Segerstrom, Jan. 28; Ocean View at Westminster, Feb. 11

All the Coaches in this league can Coach and get the most out of their players! Cruz and Granados can really play and will be tough to stop every night! Oceanview has Keller who is one of the smartest guards in O.C. and all the talent to win this league, noone will be able to match up with thier depth.

It is really too bad that there was no mention of Westminster either as a team or any individual player. Thanks for the locker room material. I am sure that it will be helpful.

  • GWL FAN says:

Cruz and granados are great player, OV is good since all there players live in Long Beach!Segerstrom is on the rise, but you guys have never mention Westminster! They made the playoffs last year and beat Loara in a wild card game! They also beat Santa Ana last year and OV the year before!Westminster needs some respect, they Have the 3rd best 3-pt shooter in the county in Victor cruz and also First team all county football player Aaroon Garbutt avg 20+ a game!gi They will earn some respect by finishing in 2nd place in this league!& also they will beat OV in a tough game at home!!GO LIONS

Can the editor address how he comes up with his information on players to watch? Some are right on and some are WAY off, not a lot of consistency, and many who should be mentioned are not....stats, coaches or draw from a hat?

Segerstrom will be a dominating team in a cupple years if they can get a better head coach...and i think Santa Ana will be close to win league

  • keeping it real says:

OV doesnt have five kids living in long beach. Ocean View will dominate westminster like every year. Get over and assume your role of doormat of the league. All Hail Jim Harris.

  • lakersfan says:

cruz and granados are a good 1-2 punch for sahs.
they are hard to defend when having a good game..im sure they can put up a fight with oceanview.they had em the first game trailing by 3 in the half...but messed up in the 2nd half..oceanview needs to get that feeling that sahs can beat em, yes OV has a bench.sahs doenst but they can still do it...westminister.ehh ok team.not good."keeping it real" is right."get over and assume your role of doormat of the league".
GWL Fan...so wat if westminister beat sahs...that gave sahs an ok team and sahs beat pacifica in cif.lost to rancho verde by 8 pts in 2nd round..bt its all good....go sahs! c/o '09
