CENTURY LEAGUE PREVIEW

LEAGUE FAVORITE

Canyon: The Comanches lost 2007-08 county player of the year Jerime Anderson, who now is at UCLA. But they bring back Braden Priest and several others from last year's league championship team. Canyon played a challenging nonleague schedule and had a victory over previously undefeated Huntington Beach.

PROJECTED LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

K.C. Caudill, Brea Olinda: At 7-foot, the sophomore presents matchup challenges for every team in the league. He averaged 13 points and eight rebounds last year, and is off to a strong start this season.

OTHERS TO WATCH

Dominic Coulter (Tustin, 6-3, Jr., G); Tim Davis (El Modena, 6-3, Jr., G); R.J. Farrell (Villa Park, 6-3, Sr. G); Rick Francis (El Dorado, 6-5, Sr., F); Dan Galluccio (Canyon, 6-6, Sr., C); Brett Kelley (Brea Olinda, 6-4, Sr., G); Tanner Leonhardt (Tustin, 6-3, Jr., G); Spencer Potiker (Villa Park, 6-6, Jr., G); Clayton Ragsdale (Brea Olinda, 6-1, So., G);

TEAM ON THE RISE

Tustin: A young team, but the Tillers have plenty of talent with juniors Dominic Coulter, Tanner Leonhardt and Anthony Wilkerson. Wilkerson was an All-County first-team as a running back.

TEAM UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Villa Park: The Spartans generally are the league favorites, but they lack the size and skill they have enjoyed in previous years.

TOP GAMES

Tustin at Canyon, Tuesday; Brea Olinda at Villa Park, Feb. 3; Villa Park at Canyon, Feb. 12

  • Coach says:

Should be a great league, with every night being a good game. This league has some of the best Coaches!

  • FARKANSABANDA says:

TUSTIN IS LOOKING PRETTY STRONG THIS YEAR.

THEY ARE GOING TO BE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

  • comanches says:

canyon will win league no doubt about it

  • Manny says:

This league doesn't have one true power like the last few years with Canyon and before that Villa Park. All 6 teams are equal. Canyon will 3-peat, they are a top 10 team but inconsistant. Tustin is under-rated, i think they are better than Brea, Tustin is 2nd, Brea Olinda is 3rd, El Modena, Villa Park, followed by El Dorado. Villa Park has a playoff team but distractions will bring that team down.

  • padrone says:

I am sure there are others to watch, but Vince Payne (Elmo) seems like an omission

League Player of the Year: Hopefully those that vote for such awards do more than look at the stat sheet. Scoring 16 points per game, but allowing the opposing center to score 20+ does not help your team win games. Nor should it allow one to win League Player of the Year. It should be a great league season with allot of parity. May the best overall player win League Player of the Year.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • for the love of the game says:

after the first game against brea olinda, canyon set the tone on how teams can stop the oc shaq. play a fast break game with out stopping to set up once you get a rebound push it and you wont have to deal with KC beacause he cant get back on defense. Im a comanche fan and i was at the game against Brea and the wildcats tried to run a zone but couldnt stop us. We kept KC on the offensive in beacause when we got the rebound he couldnt get back on defense. And the key to beating brea's zone is quick passing, and make sure your team can shoot the 3

  • Manny says:

Well, it almost worked for Villa Park. They lost by 2 to Brea. By the way, El Dorado has surprised me. Canyon seems to be a shoe in for the league title unless a bad game arrives, besides the first 4 minutes of the game, Canyon took care of Tustin easily, still Tustin has a team, a team that has had some of there stars on varsity since freshman year and they still have another year left, if Canyon cant regroup for the 09-10 season, Tustin will get the title next year. El Dorado may grab a 3rd place finish and push Brea out of the top 3. This league is amazing, all 6 teams will be battling back and forth. I hope all of them make the playoffs, the last 3 of course if they hit the magic number.

  • padrone says:

The Century League season has concluded, and my League Player of the Year is Braden Priest (Canyon). A knock down shooter that plays within the team environment on the 1st place team.

    What do you say?

  • padrone says:

I'll assume the lack of responses indicates complete agreement. Come on Brea fans, you must have a little bit of fight left in you.

  • centuryhoopfan says:

I agree with padrone, Braden Priest is the Century League MVP this year. However, he had some close competition for the top player award throughout the season. Dominic Coulter, Vince Payne, KC Caudill, Dan Galluccio, Rick Francis and Tim Davis had good seasons as well and deserve mentioning, but Priest had the biggest impact on wins & losses.
