The league season is upon us. Here are a few plots I will watch develop.
1. San Clemente vs. Aliso Niguel: The Wolverines are the two-time defending champion.
Two seasons ago, the teams met in the final game of league. San Clemente led, 2-1, with less than 10 seconds to play.
Aliso scored to make it 2-2. The teams lined up after the goal. The ref blew the whistle on the second touch.
It kept the Tritons from the league title. Revenge didn't come last year, as the Wolverines again kept the Tritons from the title.
Is this the year for San Clemente?
The teams meet in the second to last game this year (Feb. 10, 5 pm, ANHS).
2. Trinity League shake up: The injury to Mater Dei's Chris Zamarippa is unfortunate, and is sure to have an effect on the league race.
With a healthy Zamarippa, the Monarchs were in the hunt for the playoffs for sure. Without him, they need to find another way to stay in contention.
3. Sunset League Doomsday Scenario, Part II: No way, right? There can't be a repeat of the football season, with a five-way tie for first place. The preseason records of the six teams are strong.
Esperanza starts the season ranked in the top 10. Fountain Valley is on the cusp.
But like we saw in football, rankings matter not.
4. Laguna Beach looking sharp: The Breakers (6-1-4) enter Orange Coast play with their only loss to Santa Margarita. Laguna Beach has tied JSerra, Mater Dei and San Clemente.
Coach Patrick Coyne said he likes his team chances. It looks like Estancia could be the biggest obstacle.
5. Tigers on the prowl: Valencia has victories over two top 10 teams already (Sunny Hills, Fullerton) and tied Troy in tournament play, but lost in a shootout.
It would appear the Tigers are the favorites for the Empire League crown, but Kennedy will have something to say about that.
The Fighting Irish appear to be the Tigers toughest foe.
San Clemente VS Aliso Viejo, it seems AVHS coach, Randy Dodge seems to find the way to win this battle. Coach Dodge does a great job of
checking out the competiion when they play the first round,a nd then he comes in to make the adjustments to win. Caoch Dodge will win the battle -again!
Esperanza will take Sunset, started off weak, but now with top players back from injury, and one more coming about halfway in league after being taken out five minutes into Servite game (and they said Esperanza played"dirty"), things are looking up.
I would enjoy seeing JSerra take Trinity, and it seems very possible. '
San Clemente and Aliso started great, look forward to see that scoreline later.
Hopefully Zamarippa can come back in full recovery, he has had a solid past month, no doubt.
In response to Joe.....
Thats an interesting comment seeing that in 2007 the teams tied twice in League. It was san Clemente that had the lead and was tied by Aliso after six minutes of injury time. It was a great games. In 2008
Aliso wins first round and it is San Clemente who wins the second match up. Perhaps Jo the facts were a little differant then you thought.
Regardless it has become quite an exciting battle to gain the top spot in SCL. Should not dissapoint this year.
One More Item of Interest:
The games between Servite and Santa Margarita.
The battle between one keeper who made the Galaxy Academy team.
and one that did not.
Will these games be decided on saves?
nahhh...I think not - Not with the inability of SM to score goals.
P,
What a sad and little man you must be to hide behind a keyboard and try to disrespect and damage the reputation of a 17 year old kid.
Both keepers are excellent and as you have posted here recently, perhaps being one of three keepers on the Galaxy isn't such a good thing. Just maybe the SM keeper would trade his Galaxy spot for a chance to be the No. 1 with full time play on the No. 5 ranked U18 Academy team in the country.
Sunset League Doomsday Scenario Part II or shall we call it Son of Sunset League Doomsday Scenario or Revenge of Sunset League Doomsday Scenario or The Sunset League Strikes Back ... Against Itself? I don't know. All I know is that would be sick if it happened in soccer as well.
