Boys soccer top 10: Welcome Mater Dei and Fullerton

January 5th, 2009, 10:18 am · 16 Comments · posted by Damian Dottore, OCVarsity

1. Saddleback - They cruised to the championship of the Trabuco Hills Tournament. They could probably give the Galaxy a close game right now

2. El Toro - Beat Newport Harbor, 3-1, in a rematch of what was the Irvine Tournament championship. The Sailors won that game last month.

3. Servite - Lost to Desert Vitsa in the medal round of the Elite bracket at the Nautical Cup. They play host to Mater Dei on Friday

4. La Habra - The Highlanders are back where they were before they lost two games in a row last month

5. Troy - The Warriors are undfeated and face La Habra on Jan. 12. The beat the Highlanders in December

6. Trabuco Hills - Ok, they lost to Saddleback in the Trabuco Hills championship, but their goalie and defenders stepped it up in the second half. And who can beat Saddleback, now?

7. Mater Dei - Made an impressive showing at the Marina Tournament, beating Fullerton, 3-2 in the championship.

8. Fullerton - The made it to the championship of the Marina Tournament and twice held the lead in the title match against the Monarchs

9.  Esperanza - Lost 5-0 to De La Salle in the opening rounds of the Showcase bracket at the Nautical Cup

10. Sunny Hills -Haven't played since winning the North Orange County Tournament, but they will face Troy

on Friday.

Also: JSerra, Santa Ana Valley, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Valencia, Anaheim, Estancia

    Dottore,

The El Toro game was 3-1 and dont get to ahead of yourself with the galaxy comment......

  • Just checking.... says:

This may be the first year ever that South Coast League is not represented in the top ten or even the others. Hard to believe!

  • Just checking ...

    That's a great point.
It does appear the South Coast is down just a hair, but those teams shouldn't be forgotten about.

The league this year is wide open. In years past, Mission Viejo was the favorite.

This year I think either San Clemente or Aliso Niguel takes South Coast.
    We shall see.

  • Not an idiot says:

Servite was in the 2nd to highest bracket, not the highest.
Sounds like someone is scared to face teams like Brophy and De la Salle.
Jserra out? With the high quality players they have, they should be at least in top 6 or 5.

Trabuco hills played one good game.
And Esperanza with a 8-3-1 record is 9...?

All in all this is going to be an exciting season with league starting Wednesday, no question.

  • Not an idiot says:

And Fountain Valley not in, but sunny hills #10... ??????

  • pun says:

It seems that there's a lot of teams that are still getting overrated. Esperanza shouldn't be in the top 10. They've had defeats and some of those to teams that aren't ranked. Mater Dei doesn't even have their correct record on display. Some of the teams that are ranked have had an easy schedule and have lost to those teams. I honestly don't even know the way they're being ranked. Without a doubt though, Saddleback, La Habra, and Troy are the best teams in the county thus far. After that, in no particular order would be El Toro, Servite, and J Serra. The last 4 spots again in no particular order would be a battle between Valencia, Mater Dei, Santa Ana Valley and Fullerton. However Santa Ana Valley was not mentioned in the rankings and they've beat Mater Dei and Esperanza hands down, as well as Anaheim and Santa Ana. This is just my two cents. What do you think?

  • Xavier says:

Hmmm Fountain Valley not in the top 10? But I thought they were nationally ranked? haha.
I also feel Santa Ana Valley should be in the top 10.

  • dani says:

I agree with xavier, fountain valley and santa ana valley should be ranked. Estancia got ranked because they have premier players and they demanded attention, well now they have it. Lets see how long they can keep that honor. I still dont know why esperanza is ranked. This is the way i think but you must thimk otherwise!

  • empirefan1234 says:

interesting valencia isnt getting more recognition
they beat sunny hills today and beat fullerton last month
    10-2-1

  • FreeKick says:

    Idiot-

Why are you always hating on Servite? The bracketing at tournaments is done by the organizers - not the entrants. What team do you support, or are you just a drive-by hater?

  • Xavier says:

i agree with empire fan, valencia is a very talented team and i was laughing at fountain valley because they are far from any rankings right now.

  • Bud says:

Don't know how Aliso Niguel isn't ranked. Also they have won or tied for South Coast league the last 2 years. They have only lost one game this year (lost a couple on PKs too). Tied both Fullerton and J Serra and lost on PKs to both. No OC team has beat them (PKs isn't losing)how can they not be ranked.

  • Damian Dottore, OCVarsity says:

Just so you all know, I don't come up with these rankings on my own. I do get input from coaches. And as for Valencia, the rankings are for Monday-Sunday, so the Valencia victory over Sunny Hills won't be reflected until next Tuesday (Jan.12). Thanks again for reading the blog

  • k15 says:

Santa Ana Valley should definetely be ranked top 10. They have a great amount of talent. Servite is overranked. They lost 3-0 to Jserra and are ranked number 3 while Jserra is out of top 10. El Toro and Saddleback are both great teams that are definetely top 3.

  • Jared Olsen says:

valencia is da best team in da wurld. man dey shuld b numba wun

  • Jo says:

Yah, Aliso will be the top team in south coast. organized and driven, pass the preseason tests.

san clemente always starts out slow and tries to
play catch up in the end. SC hasn't beaten any tough teams in preseason
