Basketball: Calhoun’s list of players you should get to know

Mater Dei's Tyler Lamb

Mater Dei's Tyler Lamb

The boys basketball season is finally wrapping up the tournament/classic/showcase portion of the season and shortly, the county teams will turn their attention toward winning their respective leagues.

Here is a quick list of players you should or you better watch out for:

Jordan Sachs, La Habra, senior guard – He leads the county in scoring (425 points). He is averaging 30.3 points a game. Is he is the best player in the county not wearing a Mater Dei jersey?

Tyler Lamb, Mater Dei, junior guard – Even with a star-studded lineup, the new guy will have an impact. Did you not see the game against Wheeler of Georgia (18 points, 12 boards, five assists, three steals).

Alec Williams, JSerra, senior center – Lost in all of the departures from the JSerra team (and trust me there were a lot), Williams is quietly having a standout season, averaging 21.7 points a game.

• Chris Bearden, Sonora, senior guard – Would probably be the mayor of La Habra if it wasn’t for that Sachs guy. Bearden is averaging 18.1 points for the third-ranked Raiders.

James Douglas, Gabe York, Tyler Funk, Orange Lutheran – Douglas is a sophomore, York is a freshman, Funk is a junior. This is the backcourt of the future. In fact, that’s my nickname for this trio: “The Future”.

• Kyle Caudill, Brea Olinda, sophomore, center – He’s averaging 16.3 points,12.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game. I think you better take notice because the college coaches are.

Brendan Holmes, Marina, junior guard – The Machine. He’s already made 73 3-pointers (tops in the county) and is averaging 25.3 points a game.

Avery Johnson/Mason Jones, Ocean View – The Seahawks have played an extremely tough schedule, but it will only benefit them for the playoffs, especially with these two leading the way.

Ben Hayes, Mission Viejo, junior guard – Third in the county with 294 points. He is averaging 22.7 points a night.

Charles Pfirrmann, Casey James, Capistrano Valley guards - Pfirrmann is averaging 15.1 points, James has a 14.8 average. Together, they have combined to shoot 57 of 101 (56.4 percent) on 3-point field goals. I guess someone better get up on them.

That’s my list. Agree? Disagree? Let me hear your thoughts.

Good list – Jordan Sachs has the softest touch of anybody in Orange County, including the Mater Dei bunch – either needs to hit the weight room or practice being Reggie Miller.
Kyle Caudill – great hands, good touch, can move both left and right – but put him on a trampoline – he has a 3 inch vertical and gets his shots blocked by guys 6ft 2. He is only an sophomore and has made progress since Freshman year, but he needs to get a vertical to compete against the better ones.
Ocean View – Anthony Brown slightly better than Mason Jones – but the team is deep – just not learning how to play together, yet

  • THS says:

    dominic coulter-tustin
recently posted 32 points in win over santa ana and had 26 in loss to orange lutheran
    only a junior

  • asdf says:

James Walker, Los Alamitos, junior guard – out played both oceanview guards in the meeting between them and has led Los Al to an impressive start. hes only a junior too

  • pelon says:

You should consider Tanner Leonhardt. He scored 29 points against Marina and averaged 19.5 points a game in la Quinta tournoment.he is only a junior and a good shooter.

  • voiceof theoppressed says:

how about julio cruz of santa ana. whos averaging 21 points a game for a team who has nobody but him. double teamed every night. he gets no love because he’s mexican and is from santa ana. weak.

  • Basketball Fan says:

I am extremely where some of the top players are. I don’t see Chris Manresa, Sean Donovan, Donavan Jackson, Julio Cruz, or Zachary Kimber.

  • Landon Taylor says:

woow waitta pull the race card.

  • Redmen 70 says:

There’s “J” droppin dimes at Canyon for the last 4 years but now the Comanches slow start has buried them in the OC Varsity / Register……
Don’t leave them out of the picture guys because I see a 3rd consecutive Century League Title in sight. After defeating a Top 5 team like HB in the North South Classic, they knock off currently 14-1 DH and lose to the 3rd ranked team in Washington state last year, the 27-2 Squalicomb Storm who played the Monarchs in the Holiday Classic Final. The Comanches go on to defeat a decent Foothill team and enter league play at 9-6………

  • Alex W says:

Casey James is one of the best players in the county
He should really be focused on this year

  • JR says:

:D aniel Munoz from Santa Margarita averaging 21 ppg should be considered.

  • CypFan says:

Justin Igawa Should get some attention … seeing double teams every night and probably has some of the best fundamentals in the game. If he had some other help besides the freshman Jimmy Jackson, Justin could be putting up some really big numbers. But who knows, he doesnt play in a big time league like the Sunset or Trinity so how can we really tell … and imagine if Jordan Castenada(HB) was still at cypress instead of transfering??? Cypress might have been pretty impressive team… Its to bad HB steals players and the parents believe in a coach that couldnt even win a njb championship!

There are a lot of guys out there that should get some attention that play for smaller schools. Everyone get out and check out all the local schools! Not just the prime time teams like Mater Dei.

  • money101 says:

Kashif Williams from Fairmont Prep ..averaging 20 ppg… all around great player.. should be considered !

  • scl says:

You overlooked Erik Brown from Dana Hills who has led that team to a top 10 ranking while averaging 15 ppg.

  • for the love of the game says:

what about Trevor Lampe or Braden Preist from Canyon

Lampe a junior might not be the most skilled player but he risks his body on every play and when he is on, he is as good as any player his league.

Braden Priest is a senior who has one of the nicest strokes you will see. I was at a game where he nailed 8 three’s in a row and totaled up to 33 points. He can drive and use his body and he is as good as anyone in the county when he is on

  • Lakersbaby says:

Casey James from Capo is one of the best shooters around, anywhere. He struggled a little in the beginning of the season but just watch.

  • Troy says:

Where’s Abdul Yousef on this list. He may not be on the best team, but that kid plays his heart out every game. He’s double or triple teamed every game. He’s had 2 games where hes scored 30 or more, and his athleticism is as good as if not better than anyone in the county. You can expect to see some high flying jams whenever you go to his games. See for yourself:

  • THS says:

tanner leonhardt is another great player, as well as mathew glover for the tustin tiller. each had 18 points in win over valencia last night
    very impressive players

  • Jkill says:

What about Christian Mack of Valencia sure there team is not that great but he is carrying his team on his back with his scoring ability and intense defense. plus 26 points on tustin.

  • hoop fan says:

check out the pg/sophomore kid from Edison, Garrity. He is a all around good player, putting up big numbers this season, averaging over 20 ppg and many assists. He is at the top of the leaderboards, he needs 1-2 more inches and a bigger upper body and he will be one to reckon with.
Donovan from CDM is a tough player and a great shooter.
The kids from Orange L. shouldn’t be on the list, not impressive individual players, but good cohesiveness as a team.

  • Troy says:

Scratch that link i previously posted. This is the one:

  • scl fan says:

Gotta give props to Dana Hills (14-1). No names, just players. Not bad for a team without any stars.

  • baller says:

Kyle Boswell from Edison is an all-around good player. Focus on him more.

  • bball fan says:

kyle boswell. averaging about 30 points a game. he was able to keep up with jeremy tyler, a five star recruit from san diego. he scored something like 36 points that game to tyler’s 38. boswell can definitely light it up with the best in the country

  • judym says:

Daniel Munoz is doing everything to help his team win. Their last game he had last 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 block to go with 18 points.

  • Pacifica supporter says:

Everyone has to understand just b/c a kid scores doesn’t mean he should be included. What does he do on defense? I watch and scout talent but sorry to say just b/c he’s the best player at your school he shouldn’t automatically be added to the list what’s Bolsa’s record or Cypress for that matter. I agree with Calhoun for the most part but he did leave out some kids that’s why it’s a quick list you can’t have everyone on it.

  • HOOPER says:

Richard Santiago from katella should be on the list, he is by far one of the best overall guards in the county, he is a scorer and a great defender. with him and ramirez katella will be tough to handlew in league.

  • smchfan says:

Munoz for last 2 years has been shadowed by big names but he is awesome. He does all the little things to make his team win. He has fundamentals and one of OC best shooters this year.

  • smoothballer says:

Yes!!! I agree, there are many great players who are not being recognized like D. Munoz who is surely a warrior and great defender.

  • ths says:

another great player who is not being recognized is tanner leonhardt

  • alex salinas says:

    HEY DAMIAN!!!!
Jordan Sacha is a senior!!!! NOT a junior!!

  • PTPlay says:

I agree-Tanner Leonhardt is a player to watch! He is a dependable 3-point shooter and great team leader.

  • PTPlay says:

I agree-Tanner Leonhardt is a player to watch! When he gets hot he’s a scoring machine!

  • Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004 says:

made the fix on Sachs, thanks.

  • HB Fan says:

It seems the Cypress coach is a little bitter on Castaneda’s transfer. Why not ask the kid why he left. The truth would really come out and i think the Cypress coach can’t handle the truth. The HB coach is just doing his job to the best of his ability. The record he had last year as a second year coach in a program that was in turmoil should clear the air in itself. It’s sad to see people who are unhappy with their own program to put down other peoples positive achievements.

  • hoopvett says:

Hey El modena Has 3 nice players Vince Payne,Tim Davis,Kerby Farrar they all can go !!!!!!

  • phatballer04 says:

Christian Mack from Valencia can straight out play. Hes wet from the 3 and can defend the 1, 2, or 3 position. Hes carrying Valencia on his back! Only if someone on his team would step up…they would have a winning record!

  • Pacifica supporter says:

Too much complaining! there are a few players who can dominate a game and carry a team on his back, are you serious? if a player is really that good wouldn’t they have a wining record? stop complainig and don’t forget basketball is a team sport! don’t put down teammates that are trying on the court it’s high school not NBA!

  • b-lover says:

Tanner Leonhardt of Tustin has great touch and very good range.

  • John Pier says:

Travon Bryant is one of the best player on JV basketall team he averages about 17 pts , 10 back boards, 20 rebounds this guys is good i wish i could be like him

  • Roundball Fan says:

RYAN TANK just dropped 22 on El Modena and another 13 beating Brea Olinda last night. Great all around player. Great shot, and excellent passer while playing awesome defense.

  • CYPfan says:

Justin Igawa is an excellent fundamental player, i think he would be a great player if he had someone to play off of, i dont think he can be the go to guy always, although so far he has faired pretty well, he needs some help, Lequan C. needs to step it up, as well as junior Hadi Fattal, great shot and drive, not driving much though. I believe Justin Igawa should be mentioned because he is arguably the best 1 on 1 defender in his leage, and top in the county.

  • THS says:

Tanner leonhardt was the key player against El Dorado.I am suprised he did not start the game.

  • pelon says:

Tustin should find a coach who appreciate the hard work of their players.
    Like Cayon.

  • lakersfan says:

    julio cruz!
    abraham granados!
    sahs

  • Donald says:

Los Alamitos has one of the best TEAMS. Teams win games. Individual stats are unimportant because in many cases a team attempts to win with one player. Good luck with that one.
