Girls soccer: Santa Margarita advances at Excalibur

December 30th, 2008, 6:28 pm · · posted by

What happened Tuesday in the Excalibur Tournament: The Santa Margarita girls soccer team and Los Alamitos played to a scoreless tie a quarterfinals match at Foothill High.

Santa Margarita won on penalty kicks, 3-1, and advanced to the semifinals.

How it looked: Los Al played a lot of soccer in Santa Margarita’s territory in both halves. The Griffins were more aggressive and generated more attacks.

The attacks the Eagles put together were strong. However, nothing was going in during this one.

Penalty kicks: Eagles goalie Hailey Guerrero opened the kicks with a huge stop and Lauren Bohaboy followed with a make.

Los Al missed its second kick. Leigh Edwards made the Eagles’ second shot.

Guerrero blocked Los Al’s third shot. Amanda Sears blocked the Eagles’ third shot.

Shannon Ward made Los Al’s fourth shot. But Tina Bohmfalk made her shot and the Eagles won, 3-1.

What was said: Eagles coach Chuck Morales had a lot of praise for the play of sophomore goalie Hailey Guerrero, especially her effort during the PK’s.

“That was huge,” Morales said of her first stop. “Then we get our first. That’s real big. You have to give credit to Hailey. She made the shooters think.”

Close calls: Santa Margarita’s Ari Bruno dribbled deep into the box on a semi-breakaway. Los Al’s Katie Peterson was trailing, and her slide tackle broke up the play.

Los Al’s Shannon Ward struck a free kick off the crossbar shortly after halftime.

Los Al’s Sofia Bustillo had a touch shot in traffic, but the ball rolled teasingly past the post and out of bounds.

With time running out, the Eagles’ Ashley Kotero had a breakaway. Guerrero charged from net as Amy Koury slide in from behind. The pair managed to deflect the shot and Los Al cleared the attack.

High-five goes to …: Santa Margarita’s defense. Tina Bohmfalk, Katy Hickery, Alexandra Trenary, Lauren Edwards and Gabby Ozer (if I missed anyone, please leave a comment below, thanks) spent a lot of time fighting off Los Al’s charges and played big roles in the shutout.
