Youth is Served
Young talent was on full display in the first round of the 19th annual Excalibur Tournament. Here is a look at some of the teams that benefitted from the play of their freshmen and sophomore.
No. 3 Los Alamitos: The Griffins continue to get key contributions from their young players. Freshman Taylor Vargo scored a goal and added an assist to help the Griffins edged the Mustangs 2-1. In their second game, freshman Natalie Donaldson scored the first two goals of her career in her first varsity game to help the Griffins shut out Walnut High 4-0.
No. 9 Capistrano Valley: Tied 1-1 at halftime of their game against Stockdale High of Bakersfield, Capistrano Valley exploded in the second half, tallying four goals in a 5-2 victory. Freshman Gianna Lowery scored twice to lead the Cougars (11-2), who have now won four straight games.
Santa Margarita: The Eagles are beginning to rebound from a slow start, and sophomore Lauren Bohaboy was a big reason why on that strong start continued on the first day of the tournament. She added a goal in the Eagles 3-0 win over Canyon. But Bohaboy saved her best for the second game, as she personally outscored Edison 3-2 to help Santa Margarita for the fourth time in five games.
Foothill: Sophomore Kassi Anast scored the lone goal of the game, as the host Knights slipped past Fountain Valley 1-0 in an opening round matchup. Anast is now second on the team with three goals scored this year.

Comment: Rematch is the theme here, as this will be a rematch of last season’s Excalibur championship game, won by the Griffins 1-0. These two teams also played to a 1-1 draw on Dec. 16th.
No. 2 Esperanza (10-0-0) vs. Long Beach Wilson (8-1-3) 3:30 PM
Comment: Another chance to see two of the top teams in CIF-SS Division I square off, as the Aztecs and Bruins will do battle for the second time in two weeks. The two teams tied 1-1 in the finals of the Aliso Cup, with Esperanza winning 5-4 in penalty kicks to claim the tournament championship.
