Girls golf player of the year explained

This might have been my first season covering girls golf, but I am not new to high school sports. I have covered soccer, tennis, volleyball and even badminton since I started here in 1996, so I have had to pick my share of all county teams and players of the year.

But I must say that choosing Victoria Park as the girls golf player of the year was one of the toughest decisions I had to make in picking an all-county team. It's not that she's not extremely talented and worthy of the honor.

The problem was University's Ani Gulugian was just as deserving of the honor. I mean she's her league champion, she was the medalist in the Southern Section individual regional in Yuciapa, shooting a 69, which beat Park by one stroke and she was one of only two county players to qualify for the state tournament.

It was actually thinking about awarding co-players of the year but in the end I decided to go with how the two did in the SoCal Regionals and then the state tournament in Rancho Cucamonga. And in both instances, Park bettered Gulugian. But not by all that much.

Really, Park won the player of the year award with her 6-under 66 in Riverside. Six under.

Both girls had a tremendous season and should be proud of all they accomplished.

Congrats to the girls and their acheivements. Ani has been working out with us at Hansen Fitness for the past 4 years, and I hope that this had something to do with her accomplishments. Give us a call and we will have you in to know more about us.
