As another great high school sports year is coming to an end we’re looking for your thoughts on the top high school sports story of the year.
Is it Tesoro’s run to the Pac-5 finals? El Modena’s Vinny Pisani winning a state wrestling title in a loaded 135-pound bracket? Mater Dei boys basketball team winning a state title? La Habra football winning a second consecutive CIF title? St. Margaret’s football eclipsing the county record for consecutive victories?
There are plenty other candidates.
Let your voice be heard.
Feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments field below. We will compile our list and begin unveiling our top stories next week.

OC H.S. Sports

Alex Dunne winning the girls state cross country championship with one shoe HAS to be the story of the year!
That’s like Ronnie Hillman breaking those two big TD runs against Tustin with one Nike (or whatever shoe he wears).
To me, every other story is fighting for second place. And, yes, for full disclosure, I’ve covered Alex for four years so I’m willing to admit my own biased in this mater. But C’Mon, ONE SHOE!
Most of us couldn’t have finished that course as fast as she did driving it in a Rhino.
Laguna Beach football winning its first playoff game in 21seasons is a cool moment.
Calvary Chapel making its first football playoff appearance since 2001 is another.
one shoe!!! Are you kidding me? How is that possible? Why didn’t someone step on her foot to slow her down.
LA HABRA football. Mazzotta earns Back to Back titles with homegrown talent and does it with class.
Plays two Pac-5 teams to a close game.
Cracks the OC top 10. (Only non Pac-5 team to do so).
i think i recall el dorado last year at number 6 in the county for most of the year…and also winning 2 consecutive CIF titals..
just saying OC GRIDIRON FAN
what a fake by hillman he faked wilkerson out of his jockstrap ronnie is the true reggie bush of ORANGE COUNTY
GO HIGHLANDERS
Laguna Hills Hawks football first undefeated season in school history, CIF-SS Southern division Champs, Bruce Ingalls coach of the year.
Dream season for the Hawks
Laguna Hills really needs to change their name back. Everyone who has lived here awhile thinks that part of town is El Toro, anyhow. There is only one consistent quality football program in the OC at a place called LHHS.
La Habra High School
The Highlanders were playing ball when Laguna Hills was still sporting cows and an ocasional goat.
The players, the coaches, the school, and community members all work together to make North County the best place to play ball.
Back to back titles are great, but the heart and spirit shown by this team is what is so cool.
Wow I am a La Habra fan but some of you are relentless, the one shoe story sounds awesome, kind of comical really, the wrestling is a good story, I know wrestling is extremely tough, and really anyone can lose at any moment, I like the shoe story, especially because she dominated the field, or so you make it seem.
tesoro was a true cinderella story
they were by far the best story of the year
Tesoro story would be better if they won the title. I thought thew blew it. Would have won if Picazo had a typical game.
To dc:
Alex won the Division I girls cross country state title with one shoe, running the 12th fastest time ever on the course.

Dana Hills Boys and girls both winning orange county, cifss finals, and state finals. First time in State Div 1, ciff ss Div1, and orange county history thats ever been done before. Also the girls #2 all time in state and guys #1 all time in state.
oh thats for cross country
Highlanderfan, I would love to know at what point in history, was Laguna Hills High School referred to as El Toro. As far as i am aware its been LHHS since inception.
And why are you so against south county? I would be willing to bet my south orange county home that your kids would gladly leave north county for a chance to play ball at Laguna Hills. Thanks to generous donations from community members and parents, Laguna Hills High School is home to arguably the finiest stadium, weight room, and player/coaching facilities in the county.
Furthermore, I find it interesting that you discuss the “heart and spirit” shown by La Habra as if the other 50 schools in Orange County had no heart. I guaranty that kids from teams that went 0 – 10 or 1- 9 would take opposition to your comment. Its easy to go to practice when you’re a #1 seed but try suiting up everyday knowing you’ve already lost.
I’m not a huge x – country fan, but I agree that the “shoe” story is quite impressive and should probably be the story of the year. This is a story that will not soon be forgotten within the cross country world and has a legendary quality to it.
That’s all.
Thanks Tobolski for the story. That seems amazing to me, I think I would of called it quits haha, but that’s something to remember.
Tesoro making the Pac5 finals is the story of the year they went out and beat some of the best programs in the OC (other than La Habra ) and that my friends is one heck of a story when you go up against them huge private schools with unlimited funds and show em that public schools are still mixing it up it is the story of the year sorry Servit, Mater Dei OLuth, etc etc etc cant beat a good old fashion PUBLIC SCHOOL.
hey, tobolski, I have another story for you….
Taylor Warden (Calvary Chapel, 189) lost his first match at last year’s Masters Meet, meaning he was facing elimination every time he went to the mat the rest of the tourney, well, he responded with seven consecutive victories to place third.
Now that’s pressure.
He then won five more consecutive matches at state before losing in the championship semifinals.
Canyon High School winning its first League championship in 35 years or so. Then going agaist everyones odds and beating Cypress in the first round in CIF and then defeating Fullerton 53-17 which everyone thought that Fullerton was going to make it to the CIF championship. For a program who is known for baseball and basketball, to have football actually get recognized as league champions even if it was a 3-way tie they still beat all their rivals in VP and ELDO. to me that is beyond expectations for a team who was picked to be last in the Century league and to not even win a game this year
LAGUNA HILLS WRESTLING:
21 consecutive league championships/varsity
7 consecutive seasons with league championships at all levels
4 consecutive CIF championships
Not a bad run!
CdM not getting a new coach until april, then going from 3-5 to 10-3 and making to the semi’s for the first time since 95 and doing it with 4 starters out and then falling short of the tittle game to mayfair 14-6. not to mention this was done with a undersized group.
“anonymous ” i doubt any kids that play for LH would wanna leave the LH program just to go to play in a fancy stadium. they got to play in a stadium way fancier then laguna hills home stadium, its called Angel Stadium…need i add they won thier CIF championship there.
i must agree the shoe story is pretty amazing.
*The outstanding story was the one with HEART.
*Servite (home team) played Edison
*Servite’s program sales earned several thousand dollars in support of Edison’s Luke Gane, dealing with a life threatening illness.
*Halftime announcements were made in behalf of Luke and his family.
*After the game Servite led both teams in prayer on the field for Luke’s recovery
*Servite players showed up in HB earlier to have their heads shaved, just like Luke Gane and the Edison players.
* Servite has heart.
**** But they beat Edison, and Luke’s blog said how proud he was of his team, while thanking Servite families for their prayers and support.
**** It’s a sport; leave it on the field, life is bigger
BTW, Luke is on the road to full recovery. It will take time, but he’s winning the battle!
to grandma:
Thanks for reminding us some of the best sports stories happen off the field.
Edison/Servite – Luke story.
First time I heard of the shoe story. But it is pretty amazing. So that’s 2nd.
And Magnolia reaching the playoffs for the first time in 23 years.
another good story this time in girls basketball.
at canyon high new coach Matt Dale wanted to have his teams do community work while bonding as a whole entire team. So his idea create specialized Pink jerseys for all levels of teams and play a game with them. The reason for this was to raise money for the Kay Yow/Womans basketball coaches association cancer fund. SInce the beginning of school girls were selling lollipops everyday up until the big game. Coach Matt Dale was expecting to raise about $1500, his actuall total was $3000. In front of almost 900 spectators Canyon wore those jerseys and won in all 3 levels of games. With Varsity making the exclamation point of a good cause by winning 70-21

I have to agree with “Grandma”. Being Luke’s mom, I cannot thank the Edison family and our community enough for their unbelievable support and also to Servite for stepping out of the rivalry box to help a fellow football player. Incredibly impressive! Not only was the Servite vs. Edison game memorable but also the Bell game (EHS vs. FVHS) . Talk about heart… Edison gave it their all to keep the bell with Luke there as their inspiration. It was his first appearance since his bone marrow transplant. It was an emotionally charged and triumphant night!
