Fryer's football rankings: Teams 1-2

December 15th, 2008, 4:02 pm · 27 Comments · posted by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

Here are the teams ranked first and second in Steve Fryer's final football Top 10:

1. Tesoro (13-1) After seeing Tesoro beat El Dorado, I thought Tesoro was OK. Then, after seeing Tesoro beat Los Alamitos, I thought Tesoro was pretty good. Then, after seeing Tesoro beat Mater Dei, I thought Tesoro was very good. Then, after seeing Tesoro beat Orange Lutheran, I thought Tesoro was excellent. After seeing Tesoro lose to Long Beach Poly, there is no doubt that Tesoro was an excellent team and clearly was Orange County's best football team in 2008.

2. Orange Lutheran (10-3) Sure, Lutheran lost by 28 points to Tesoro and Mater Dei lost to Tesoro by only three, but Lutheran beat Mater Dei.

I think the fact that Tesoro, a public school, came so close to beating Poly, a private school that can recruit players from wherever they want, is an amazing accomplishment. All "what ifs" aside, Tesoro put up an honorable and amazing fight. They fought strong and the Tesoro football team of 08 will never be forgotten.

  • The War Room says:

    Dear Rachel,

You failed to notice that one of you linebackers John Michael Davis was recruited from "Rancho San Margarita"! Funny how we can point fingers at others but fail to see our problems.

Congrats to Tesero on a great season and I hope to seem them playing us regularly in finals.

  • The War Room says:

Sorry that should be "your linebackers".

  • ko says:

    Rachel,

Poly is a public school. They are part of the Long Beach school system. What is amazing is how far Tesoro progressed, and how fast.

  • Waking the dog says:

Not so sure that Long Beach Polytechnic High School is a private school. I think it is a public school with open boundaries/enrollment within the LBUSD. Not unlike Orange and many other Orange County Districts. You don't think that players didn't migrate to Tesoro too? Great game for both teams, make no excuses, the Tesoro coaches didn't.

  • Landon Taylor says:

LBP is a public school rachel.

  • TesoroWink says:

Tesoro - Thanks for the memories, everyone that you allowed to witness true greatness for 14 nights this fall will never forget. LBP, thanks for keeping it respectful in the end, good game.

  • Irving says:

TESORO has been amazing. They have been the best team to watch all season, and the Poly game, despite the loss, was no exception. Looking forward to more of the same next season.

  • beachbum says:

Poly is a public school with 4,600 students. This compares for example to Tesoro with 2,700. As the LBP coach said during the final game, LBP players are the ones that keep the pressure on LBP. The players don't want to be the ones to break the winning tradition of Poly football.

Tesoro played a great game and had a dream season... They certainly have no reason to hang their heads low. It was a great experience for them and it will be remembered for the rest of their lives.

  • TimP says:

Tesoro had a great season, watching them play was very enjoyable. The students are not only great athletes, but also great scholars. I doubt too many starting HS quarterbacks have scored 2,200 on their SATS and maintain a 4.5 GPA. I have no doubt that Coach Barnes will keep Tesoro competitive and groom many Champions of Life.

Poly has always been great in sports, and losing a close game is nothing to be ashamed of. Remember, Poly can recruit (accept transfers) from a city of 500,000+.

Rachel - Poly is a public school. To raise school-wide test scores the district chose that site to be home to the PACE program. This allowed bringing in students that excelled academically from all over Long Beach. It would be interesting to see how the school would score if it strictly adhered to attendance boundries and didn't offer special programs to boost the sites average API and CAHSEE scores.

  • greendog says:

Poly is a public school, however it is a magnet school. That means that kids from anywhere in the district can apply to go there. Last I heard Tesosro had close to 4,000 kids if not more. That was from a Tesoro student so I am not sure how accurate that info is.

  • Tesoroite says:

the actual enrollment for 2008 is 2,600 down form prior year of 2,800.

  • TW says:

    Great Football

Looking forward to next season.Until then "Be true to your school"
Stay safe, stay cool and GO O-LU.............................................................

  • JR Salazar says:

I think this shows that while the South Coast League can hold its own, the Moore League can also show that its lost none of its swagger. Lakewood took down Mission Viejo and Tesoro got edged by Poly.

The Moore League is BACK. Again. Take note, OC.

  • rjppdp says:

I think that Fryer should change his top 10 to the Pac 5 or the south coast top 10. He only chooses teams that fit that description. Placing a fourth place team that cannot make the playoffs over teams in North Orange County that either make finals or win titles is a travesty. Just be honest.

  • dshot says:

unbelievable! st. margaret's left out again! Wake up oc homer!Harry Welch's teams always beat their opponents 42 in a row , 46 in a row which don't include the victory over nationally recognized DeLaSalle in the first state championship since 1923!

  • dshot,

Tell Harry to schedule a game against the Trinity league and maybe you'll get your respect. Your Lacrosse program plays the bigger schools, why not football.

  • roy says:

I go to Tesoro High School and i couldn't believe that our football program has changed evrything around in just two ( school ) years! from 1-9 to 13-1, that is an amazing accomplishment and I wish all this years's seniors the best in their futures'. ( Not too bad for a school that is in a hole!!!)

  • Come back JACK! says:

Alright... Tesoro lost to Longbeach Poly in a pretty good game... keep in mind about half the startes from Santa Margarita transfered to Tesoro in the off season including Boise State bound linebacker John Michael Davis... It seems as if all the top schools these days are cheating by recruiting their players... Orange Lutheran is the same... and after being blown out by Tesoro they shouldnt even be in the top five, yeah they beat mater dei, but they lost to servite so why isnt servite ahead of them Stevie boy...

  • Come back JACK! says:

Heres another one for you, Esperanza lost to Longbeach Poly in the quarter finals in one of the best games i have ever seen, they gave Poly the best game of the year, and what does Esperanza get after losing to Poly in the last 2 minutes? Not even ranked in the state and a garbage rank in the county after beating the number 6, 3, and 9 teams in the county.

  • da bomb says:

then with ur math edison is better than newport harbor

  • dshot says:

DCF, Tell the trinity league to schedule st.margaret because Harry has been there done that! they haven't! respect in the oc goes thru st.margaret's, there's a new sheriff in town!

  • scftfan says:

Get your facts straight please. One starter tand his brother ransferred from SM and they live within tesoro boundries. The other kid that transferred never saw the field.

  • gregg b says:

hopefully some of these o c teams will have the "gonies" to schedule centennial corona which will prove tonite they are the best ,m
ost balanced team in the state if not the country.bad news for everyone next year ,the jv team beat every team by35 or more inc.mater dei

  • Insurance Dude says:

Speed, speed, speed! It's what Poly has that OC teams don't. They wear down teams with their speed. It's not rocket science...just watch...Coach Rolly and Coach Johnson will miraculously get some Reggie Bush / Patrick Turner protoypes who's families either convert to catholicism or move to Mission Viejo. I'm sure Papa Barnes will help the draw of top rank athletes to Tesoro as well.

  • Ryan says:

Oh and don't forget the schools john michael was at before santa margarita Lutheran High school was one of them.

  • Eric Law says:

    haha
with all do respect come back jack,
tesoro had one transfer starter who happens to live in tesoro boundries. Check your facts before you post rude comments.
    Thank you
