  • Another pick that makes me completely cringe – Caulum on the second team. Again, probably a formula deal. Considering how well he played in CIF, especially in the finals, Caulum was first first-team worthy

Foothill has three first teamers; Mater Dei has first-teamers.

Nice to see El Modena’s Schwamb get his due.

Santa Mag didn’t make the playoffs but Rutger made All-CIF. He’s good but that’s still interesting

    Dan,

what are your thoughts on samuels getting poy even though he didnt make it to the finals?

  • Samuels was still worthy. With the late-in-the season loss of Brush, Samuels was carrying an even heavier load. It’s not easy being the No. 1 defender, No. 1 scorer and No. 1 passer on a team that plays well-coached and talented teams.

That said, I would have predicted that the coaches would have picked the Smithson-Wherry ticket as co-players of the year. I figured that VP’s finish would have hurt Samuels more.

  • thallsta320 says:

that makes sense. when are all-county selections made, and any word on signings?

  • Disagree with you! says:

    Dan,
Absolutely disagree with you on poy being smithson-wherry.combo.
The table was set for Samuels starting last year. I know it is not being considered here, but Samuels has played for the D1 Premier championship two years in a row. This year he was on the Premier League All Star team. Neither Smithson or Wherry have even played P1.
Samuels was a member of the MJNT traveling team. Neither Smithson or Wherry were a member of that either.
And as much as I hate to bring up the college card it is a good indicator of polo talent. Samuels is probably the most sought after player in the U.S. right now. Both Smithson and Wherry are very limited because of size.

  • All-County will come out in the paper this coming Tuesday, Dec. 23, and perhaps late Monday afternoon on ocvarsity.com. I think teams will be an incredible collection of talent. Some water polo fans will appreciate the selections but I know some will also disagree, and that’s fine, too. I’m fair and try my best to select the best players from the season. It’s not an easy job but it is fun, too.

  • Disagree With You! – I didn’t write that I would have picked the Wherry-Smithson ticket. I predicted the coaches would make would make that call.

Samuels was worthy of the co-POY award.

  • hunch says:

Yes, Samuels is worthy, but the other two are as well. Wherry-size? Selections will alwasy include politics and coaches that know how to work the system fair best.

  • pologod8 says:

    wherry-smithson????
    more like wherry- carroll
colin carroll was clutch in playoffs and came through huggeee despite a back injury
smithson was healthy and still couldnt manage to have success against mater dei…. both times
smithson is good but i believe colin carroll was better
and salvino from servite shold definitely be first team
as a sophmore he played very strong

  • Question says:

I’m not familiar with Carroll. (No disrespect whatsoever.) Who does he play for?

  • Dan Albano says:

Question – Colin Carroll was the senior goalie for Mater Dei and excellent

  • yo dawg says:

is there going to be a top sophomore list or no. i have been waiting?

  • sophdad says:

I have been waiting also for soph list.
    Happy holiday’s

  • top freshman would be better
