Who picks this list? Is it a vote by coaches?
From the CIF-SS website “2008 All CIF Boys Water Polo Teams ~ presented by the LA84 Foundation as selected by the Boys Water Polo Coaches’ Assn.”
Reynolds was a slam-dunk first-teamer in my book. Sure, Foothill probably was limited by the selection rules on how many first-teamers it could have but Reynolds was worthy.
So here’s the key question: are the rules good to have? Knowing how political these lists can get, yes, the rules are good.
Update: I was wrong. The rules allowed teams to have as many as five players selected all-cif. There were no limits on how many first-teamers teams could have. Still, knowing the political natural of these picks by the coaches, selection rules are important. That being said, Reynolds still should have been on first team.
How in the world can White be player of the year when he behaved so terribly after the big game???? Poor sportsmanship should never be rewarded!
Dan, The coaches picked the guys who were game changers. It was a pretty unanimous decision who got first team. The guys who coaches had to match their toughest players against. If you don’t see it, your showing you don’t understand the entire game.
Div1Polo – Reynolds helped tilt games in favor of Foothill against El Toro in the Sea View League title match and certainly in the Division I semifinal against Santa Barbara.
Against the Dons, Foothill looked to be in serious trouble for much of the first half and it was the game-changing ability of Reynolds in the second quarter and early third that helped turn that match around.
He did this with an all-around game: shooting, passing, defense and counterattacking. He also is a U.S. junior national teamer.
And in the two biggest matches of this past season, El Toro didn’t have much of answer for Paul Reynolds.
I’m happy for all the boys that made first, second and third team but in my opinion, Paul was a first teamer.
But what do I know.
Dan I actually agree with you about Reynolds, however you comment “He also is a U.S. junior national teamer.” is irrelevant for the high school season. If the list is going to be influenced by accomplishments outside of high school, then we can start making arguments for a whole bunch of players.
I’ve always wondered how some of these players can receive such honors in the CIFSS and others who have significant accomplishments outside of H.S., national teams etc., barely get a mention. Not all, but I can certainly think of four or five. Seems to be a disconnect.
