The Calhoun Final Four: Laguna Hills vs. Mayfair

December 9th, 2008, 8:48 pm · · posted by

SOUTHERN DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Laguna Hills (12-0) vs. Mayfair of Lakewood (10-3)

Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Cerritos College

Outlook: Now faced with the task of trying to score against the Laguna Hills defense: the Mayfair Monsoons. Good luck.

The Hawks are allowing 8.6 points a game. They have been even nastier in the playoffs: Artesia scored nine, Santiago posted seven and Norwalk scored eight.

Can’t we just give Mayfair six points and hand the trophy to the Hawks?

The Hawks also revved up their offense in the playoffs. Laguna Hills has scored 41 and 42 points in the past two rounds of the playoffs.

Senior quarterback Robert Refsnyder is the leader. His stats aren’t impressive, but you can’t measure his worth in stats. He has rushed for 503 yards and nine touchdowns. He also has passed for nine touchdowns.

Derek Browning leads the ground attack with 1,250 yards.

The Monsoons scored 14 points against Corona del Mar and one score was set up thanks to 41-yard fumble return.

All of Mayfair’s offensive leaders were kept in check by the Sea Kings’ defense. The Sea Kings’ defense is tough, but it isn’t Laguna Hills tough.

This could mean pain and doom for the Monsoons.

Let’s see how the Hawks handle the long bus ride. This is nearly a home game for the Monsoons. Good Luck to both teams.

  • Pappy says:

For me, the championship game was last week when LH beat Norwalk. It will be an upset if Mayfair somehow pulls it out. Won’t happen though, Hawks still motivated by last season’s first round exit.

Who did Mayfair beat in 2001.MAYFAIR was a heavy underdog. You O.C>BOYS know nothig about the untangables of winning. The Soons will play hard for 48minutes.They play with passion. They will play their best game ..Compare Artesia scores Mayfair blew out Arta 55 21.L.H. Struggles MHS struggled withCDM..Crap shoot The Soons have the nuts to play 14games

  • To Chris.

Thanks for responding. One item of help, no one uses untangables to win.

It’s the intangibles they use to win.

    Anyway …

Mr. Calhoun did not mention Laguna Hills game vs. Artesia where they only scored 17 points, where Mayfair hung 55 on the same Artesia team. As for Pappy’s comment, Mayfair beat Norwalk this season 35-14 and won the Suburban League. Norwalk finished second in the Suburban League. So how was the championship game last week? Of Mayfair losses this season, one was to Moorpark, who play for a CIF championship this weekend. They lost to Lakewood, who played in the Pac-5 semi finals last week, losing to Poly 20-10. They also lost to Los Alamitos, 24-7, which according to this newspaper was one of the best team in the OC all season long. It should be a good game to watch between two evenly matched teams.

Comparing scores is not a real great way to try to figure out who is going to win. Artesia-LH was a much closer game than Artesia-Mayfair, but Norwalk played Mayfair close, while LH was up 42-0 with 3 minutes to go in the 3rd. The CdM scores also don’t give you a good picture as LH blasted CdM, while Mayfair struggled to pull out a 14-6 win.

This will be a great game as both these teams are very good.

  • 0925 says:

Laguna Hills 34 CDM 7 and that td came in the 4th quarter to Mayfair 14 CDM 6 and another thing about the artesia game. LH came off a bye and still manage to win then follow up with two poundings. LH has arrived. For some its been an long 4 years to finally make it to this game and they sure wont let it slip through their fingers.

“You O.C>BOYS know nothig about the untangables of winning.” – chris

That’s funny. Because the same can be said about Mayfair. How many time in the last 4-5 years were they seeded 1 or 2 and were booted early from the playoffs ?

LH is taking it. 40+ – 7 (coming on the backups in the 4th)

  • 123654 says:

should be a good game though and mayfair gave up 13 to calvary in the first round
