Poll: Who will win the Pac-5 Division?

December 8th, 2008, 7:30 am · 38 Comments · posted by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

Only three teams in Orange County still are undefeated. One of them is Tesoro, which will play for the Pac-5 Division championship on Saturday against a non-county team with an unblemished record: Long Beach Poly.

The game not only will determine the Pac-5 winner but almost certainly will send the champion on to a CIF State bowl game Dec. 19 or 20 at Home Depot Center.

We want you to weigh in on the game. Make your pick for the winner and then give us your argument for your choice in the comments field below.

  • David from Anaheim Hills says:

The experience of the BIG game will help Long Beach POLY, they have away of pulling out the victory. The defensive backs are going to be the key, can the Poly DB's stop Tesoro passing game. And the defense is picking up it's confidence. These two teams match up well, how the linebacker respond will be a key. If # 5 for Tesoro has a huge game, it could be the difference. When Melvin Richardson or Barner break through the front line and Tesoro can keep Poly to short gains, it will be a Tesoro night.
But the truth is that Long Beach will help us find out who TESORO is on the big stage. With the history of Poly and 17 major division football titles, 9 championship games in 12 years, sport school of the century, and a pipeline to the NFL, can TESORO step up and make history? New vs Established. Long Beach vs The Best of the OC.
Long Beach Poly 24-14 over Tesoro
Good luck to Poly and Tesoro

  • B'S HOUSE says:

Tesoro has shown that it is "this year" a powerhouse, and definetly deserving to represent the O.C. They have beat some of the best teams the state has to offer, and in some games has shown how dominant it can be in all aspects of the game. People are talking about the speed and size of Poly, but what i have seen in Tesoro is all the above, but more importantly "HEART" and that is something these boy's had before they even enterd the Tesoro program. Prediction... Lara will have his boy's ready, but i feel they will not be able to match Tesoro's intensity, and Barnes scheme's. Tesoro 28 Poly 21. Good luck and congratulations to both programs.

  • Footballfan says:

I thought Tesoro was good, but the way they dominated Olu, wow!!
Tesoro's O-line was incredible and the Defense was on fire, I'm looking forward to this great matchup vs. Poly.
    May the best team win!

  • OB says:

I saw Tesoro play for the first time Saturday against OLU, and I was amazed. I know Poly is good but, I think this will be a real challenge for them. Based on their previous games that were close, they better not get behind too far against Tesoro. I can't wait for this game. There may be a new King crowned.

  • BFF2008 says:

I think Tesoro will win because: Poly does not pass and Tesoro is very effective against the run. Granted they have not been on this stage before, but That will have little or no effect on these kids. They have the biggest hearts in O.C. Preston King will be very impressive

  • roy says:

Im a sophmore at Tesoro and b4 I entered the High School we had a 1-9 season... I thought football was not our sport, but last years performance was incredible and this year was completely AMAZING!!! I went to the game against O Lu and I was surprised it was 28-0 at half time, I think it also stunned the O Lu fans, we can go a long way and a win against POLY will be the biggest sports triumph at this school, POLY are an incredble opponent and im glad Tesoro will play against one of the elite teams of the nation.

  • sgthappypants says:

    Tesoro wins 33-30.

  • N0hmadd says:

When you are #1 it puts a nice big BULLS-EYE on your forhead, in other words it brings out the best in the opponent.

Granted LB Poly has not been impressive throughout the playoffs, however a wins a win and its better to win ugly then loose gracefully.

Tesoro is an amazing team and more then worthy of respect, Poly will really have to show up for this Game or it will be a very long night for the Jackrabbits.

Being an Alumni of Polys class of 1977, I will root for the Jackrabbits, however win or loose I will be proud of both teams when the game is over.

    (Tesoro 24-17)

  • tondizzle85 says:

Tesoro is big, physical, aggressive, and has a methodical coaching staff that was brilliant against a very good Olu team. I am really rooting for Tesoro because I know their team will represent the OC very well against a strong Poly squad. The Tesoro leaders who have had interviews on TV and on this site seem like great kids. I think these young men are ready to take that title. Come on Tesoro! Bring that championship back to Orange County.

  • Tesoro fan says:

Tesoro by more than 10, I believe they will take it to Poly like they did to Olu... Remeber Poly only beat Olu by 2 points last year, I think Tesoro takes it all the way and wins state too!

  • gregg bahner says:

too bad they dont have a playoof with the inland champ and pac 5 .centennial would beat buth poy and tesoro

  • Michael says:

The Tesoro O-line is an incredible group. Their QB has all day to throw the ball, and the receivers have all the time in the world to get open. Best O-line in So Cal...are any of these o-lineman being recruited by major colleges? Good luck to the Titans Saturday night!

  • sportswatcher says:

If Tesoro can keep up with the speed of Poly and can shut down the running game, they will win as Poly is very one-dimensional. I say speed because the only weakness I have seen with the Tesoro defense and special teams was when they had to stop extremely fast kick returners and running backs when they turned the corner. Poly has those atheletes but Barnes will have them ready. Don't be surprised if Barnes stacks the line and forces Poly to throw. King and Gudim will need to have an exeptional night in the defense.
This is the year that Tesoro has to get it done as they are mostly seniors.
The only other team I have seen of equal caliber was Centennial of Corona.

Tesoro in a close one over Poly.

  • HSfootballfan says:

If Tesoro wins , they definitely deserve to be in a state bowl game.
I think they can beat Poly with their passing/ running game. ---- Also,
Corona Centennial ( Inland) again has re-loaded and deserves another invitation to a state bowl game. Centennial is again
( undefeated) very strong defensively / offensively. Good Luck to this year's state bowl representatives !!

  • gregg b says:

tesoro will win due to lack of pass game by poly if they can contain their backs.is tesoro fast enough to keep up with the athletes of poly?whether it is poly or centennial that you watch you realize most teams cant keep up.. we shall see, good luck tesoro !

  • rick yoder says:

Tesoro is the only team that matches well with poly.Their defensive backs are exceptional.I think that will be the difference.Turnovers and who scores the most points off of those turnovers.

    TESORO 21 POLY 17

  • DWB says:

Sorry Tesoro fans the slipper will brak this Saturday Polys line is just as good as Tesoros, and Poly has more overall athlethes Poly wins this one. 20-9

  • David from Anaheim Hills says:

Greg Bahner Corona Centennial plays in a powder puff division. I looked at their schedule and it was a bunch of Lame unknown teams. It is time for Corona Centennial to move up to Pac-5, granted CC has had talented teams but why are they in weak division of CIF? Tell CC head coach to schedule Poly next year instead of a low quality Mater Dei team. Oh yea, they looked pretty weak on Defense against MD. That speed of CC matches up against Mater Dei, but POLY will show them what speed is.

  • jackrabbit says:

Tesoro was very impressive Sat..Congrats to the Titans and their fans. Who would have imagined two public schools in the finals.
I am sure papa Barnes has had long talks with his son about Poly's strengths and weaknesses. His Los Al teams have tangled with the jackrabbits several times in recent yrs. Good luck to both teams! Poly band rules!

  • LeTsGoTiTaNs says:

tesoro is unstoppable right now. 27-14

  • jackrabbit says:

Lakewood was also deemed "unstoppable" after they crushed Mission Viejo. Somehow the best offenses seem to disappear when they play the bunnies. By the way....Anaheim stadium is the absolute worst place to play a football game. Also, to Greg Bahner....Poly crushed Centennial in a pre-season game a few yrs ago! You can beat OC teams with your speed but not Poly.

  • Treasure says:

OK jackrabbit, since you say Anaheim stadium is a terrible venue for football - is it best to puchase general admission or reserved seating? Also, are the fans mixed together on one side?

  • Jim H says:

Poly's luck stops here. Tesoro is the stronger team. The only way they loose is if they are satisfied to just be in the final.

  • lancer fan! says:

    POLY IS OVERATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i was at the lakewood vs poly game.
if it wasnt for lakewoods offense making silly mistakes POLY would have never made that last set of scores!!!!
not just that, 3 calls WERE RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE REFS BUT NEVER WERE CALLED!!! those calls also helped out the jackrabbits with good field possesion!!!!

    BOTTOMLINE: "TESORO WILL WIN!!!!"

  • lancer fan! says:

    one more thing....
HOW CAN LONG BEACH POLY BE RANKED IN THE STATE WHEN THEY BARELY WIN AGAINST TEAMS THAT AREN'T RANKED IN STATE OR COUNTY?
LIKE I SAID: "LONG BEACH POLY IS OVERATED!!!!"
LAKEWOOD SHOULD BE GOING TO THE FINALS!!!
POLY'S little WINS ENDS THIS WEEKEND!!!

  • David from Anaheim Hills says:

Lancer fan! how is Poly ranked in the state? THEY WIN!!! Lakewood which was a excellent team, lost.
Thats why they will be seating on the couch watching Tesoro/Poly play in the FINALS. So grab a ice cold Whineken and watch the best team win. Good grief, stop crying.
Oh yea, it was Poly's defense that created the pressure which lead to the Lakewood turnovers, hence the Poly win.

  • Lepus girl says:

Just bought tickets for the game. Reserved seats have a better view, are one section higher up than the general admission ones. Team seats are segregated on either side of the 50 yard line. Facing the field, Tesoro fans will sit to the right of the 50, Poly fans to the left. Also, Fans enter through different gates which will open at 6:00 pm Saturday.

  • Insurance Dude says:

Poly speed will wear down Titan will. 24-14 Poly.

  • jackrabbit says:

Poly has played many a Championship game at Anaheim stadium and the reason I do not think it is suitable for football is the same reason the Rams left. Who wants to line up on a baseball infield? Also, the fans are so far from the action and it is so huge that it lacks intimacy. The Home Depot center is an xlnt venue for football for the fans as well as for the players. To Treasure...buy the general adm. ticket. The reserved section will be plenty dead and lonely plus you will be on the third level. If Tesoro scores more than 13 points they will win the game. If this game is half as good as the Poly vs. St. Bonaventure game earlier this yr, the fans will have had their moneys worth. Speaking of St. B, they will be playing in a CIF final this week as well and probably for a State title. What's their record? 11-1 and ranked 6th in the State. Who did they lose to? Poly! Guess who beat last yrs Nat'l Champs, Miami Northwestern in Miami? Poly!

  • just a mom says:

hey jackrabbit you should get your facts straight. they are filling in the infield with grass so there will be no dirt.
    good luck tesoro.
    Tesoro will win 35-14

  • frank says:

St B is playing Moorpark at Moorpark high...a grudge match if there ever was one since Darrell Scott transferred from Moorpark to St B last year...Moorpark is 11-1 with only loss by 3 points to a very strong Notre Dame HS...Moorpark is playing at home and has a chip-upset special???

  • Empire fan says:

Should be a great game between two very solid teams, it's to bad it's at Anaheim Stadium as that is a lousy venue for highschool football, from the parking lot to the lousy sight lines from the seats it's not a good football stadium and the city of Anaheim never makes anything fun for anyone, there will be parking fees and long lines to get in and out as always, if you're going to the game sit as high as you can because the lower level seats have a really lousy view of the field and if you're general admission you could end up stuck in the back of an endzone watching a highschool football game which is ridiculous, good luck to both teams play hard and stay healthy and whoever wins deserves to play for the state title, go So. Cal!!

  • Rick says:

I don't know much about Poly other than what I am reading on these posts. I do know a lot about Tesoro as my sons go there. Based on what I am reading about Poly (especially lancer fan's comments) and what I know about Tesoro, I have to think that Tesoro will win by 10 or more. Tesoro killed OL (very surprised by the 42-14 score), beat a strong Los Al team, and defeated Mater Dei, a perenial high ranked team.

  • fighting maroon says:

Congratulations to both teams for making it all the way to the championship game. Kudos to the coaches of both teams.
I will watch the game and root for Poly. Oh, what a great game it will be!

  • Tesoro Mom in RSM says:

Tesoro Titans will rule!! What a wonderful team, coaching staff and school. We are so proud to be part of Tesoro!! Go out and give it your all at the game this Saturday night and make South Orange County proud!! The whole team should be honored for a wonderful season. I will be watching and rooting for Tesoro all the way. Go #13, #9, #58, #85 and #5 you all have made this team soar!!

It is time for a new team to step up and take over the top stop and Tesoro will do this!!
    Go Titans!!

  • SGV WIZARD says:

im a bishop amat fan..i went 2 the game between amat & poly..it was a close game that amat gave away on 2 turnovers..as far as the jackrabbits there luck is about 2 run out..they have a good program but there defense is overated.. amat a at large team going into the playoffs had no problem running or passing the ball against this defense..polys defense is B+ but will be no match 4 the high powered offense of tesoro..i expect tesoro to go over the middle with alot of short passes before they go straight through the teeth of the poly defense..polys best chance will be 2 score big early..also tesoros defense is underated..final score 31-17 tesoro..u heard it here 1st..

  • cnez77 says:

Poly would struggle to beat the top 4 Trinity league teams right now. Tesoro beat the top 2. Poly's going down and going down big. Tesoro's peaked just at the right time. They have all the momentum. Just watch how fast they'll be. Poly's got nothing on them. Tesoro's just simply better at all aspects. I saw them against Lakewood last week and felt they got lucky to beat them. Lakewood was their own worst enemy with their turnovers. I'll take my hat off to Poly if they win, but I seriously doubt they can. Congratulations to both teams for making it this far. 2 great programs.

  • jackrabbit says:

I watched the Tesoro/OLU game a couple of times and was impressed with the Titans initially, but after seeing the game a second time and pausing sections at a time it became apparent to me that Tesoro was largely successful against OLU in ways it will never be against Poly. Tesoro's defensive ends were blowing past OLU's lineman and OLU seemed to be going in slow mo on defense. King and Gudim are xlnt players that play on both sides of the ball they both have good football instincts but they both seem to have just avg. speed. Tesoro's team speed especially in kickoff coverages is hard to watch. I expect Poly to take several balls back deep. Poly will not be able to sustain drives against Tesoro. I see Poly scoring on long plays from scrimmage. Barner/Richardson/Westbrook can all take it to the house on one play if they break the initlal line of scrimmage and Tesoro's secondary will not be able to stop them. In a game of matchups, OlU did not match up well with Tesoro. How will Picazzo react under duress for the first time? How will he and his receivers adjust to Poly's closing speed? Do you think the Titan runners will be able to take a corner on Poly? Congrats to both teams for getting to the Finals!
