Girls tennis: Three county girls in action today

December 5th, 2008, 10:02 am · · posted by

The girls tennis season concludes today with the semifinals and finals of the CIF-SS girls tennis individual championships, starting at 11 a.m. at Seal Beach Tennis Center.

Check here for updates throughout the day. Then come back this evening for “FryDay” night as the football playoffs continue. I will be heading down to St. Margaret’s to work with Dan Albano on tonight’s potential record-setting victory for the Tartans.

it could be a record-witnessing day for myself. (Read on)

Orange Lutheran’s Kaitlyn Christian is alive in singles, and Dana Hills’ Brynn Boren and Kristina Smith in doubles as they continue their historic run.

Here’s a look at what to watch for today in tennis:

Boren and Smith are the defending champions and with a finals berth become the first pair to play in three straight doubles championship matches. If they repeat, they will become the first since 1979 to do it and only the third team in the past 80 years.

They open with county-pests Peninsula’s Anna Tatsuno and Jenna Glimp. Glimp/Tatsuno eliminated Corona del Mar’s Kelli Feeley and Karen Ishii two Saturday’s ago, then beat Troy’s Stefanie Villajuan and Frances Tseng yesterday.

It would be a major upset if Glimp/Tatsuno pull out a victory in this one. Smith and Boren’s games should overpower them.

Awaiting in the finals would be a highly anticipated match with Campbell Hall’s Sabrina Santamaria and Sarah Lee. Check back later for an update and closer look at this one.

In singles,

Christian is facing the girl that eliminated her in last year’s semifinals – Lakewood’s Stacey Tan. Tan finished runner up last year to Troy’s Alison Ramos.

Tan outhits Christian in terms of power, but Christian has a great court sense and is extremely smart with her game. She won’t be able to outhit or overpower Tan, but she has the game to outplay Tan.

If Christian is able to move the ball around and keep Tan off balance, thus setting her attacks up to the open court, Christian can win. If Tan’s striking the ball clean and not making mistakes, she is going to cause problems for whoever she plays.
