The Calhoun Six to Watch: Tustin vs. Canyon

December 2nd, 2008, 10:39 pm · 61 Comments · posted by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

Tustin (8-4) vs. Canyon (8-4)

Friday, 7 p.m. at Tustin High

Outlook: Will this be a continuation of their meeting Oct. 24?

In that game, Tustin’s Ameer Webb did the damage in the first half with 85 of his 89 rushing yards. Anthony Wilkerson then delivered the knockout blow in the second half, rushing for 91 of his game-high 137 yards.

And then for good measure quarterback Taylor Richardson connected with Wilkerson for a 66-yard pass in a 42-13 victory.

The Tillers’ offense wore down the Comanches that night. More important, the Tustin defense limited the big plays that have been the trademark of the Canyon offense.

What does the second meeting have in store?

Everybody in the stadium will know where Tustin is going with the ball, but it isn’t easy to stop the Tillers’ relentless ground game.

The best way to slow Tustin is to try to get a lead of at least two scores and force the Tillers to go to the pass. But that’s easier said than done.

Canyon needs its big-play guys (Jared Gobert, Tubotein Taylor and Colton Grandbouche) to produce early in the contest.

Opponents have had success passing against Tustin — El Dorado’s Kane Wilson threw for 199 yards, and Kennedy’s Andy Peterson had 312 yards vs. the Tillers.

Those games happen to be two of Tustin’s four losses.

Canyon has had problems handling Tustin’s rushing attack (Wilkerson posted 283 yards vs. Canyon last year), but can the Comanches find a way to win with a berth in the Southwest Division finals on the line?

  1. Mike Byars Says:

Being an Alum, and Ex-player, I hope Canyon finds away to win, they have been on a roll, but, Tustin is riding an 8 game wave, I hope I’m wrong but unless Canyon can get a lead that make’s Tustin have to air the ball, the result could be the same as the first time.

  2. Comanche Says:

Canyons defense has stepped it up to a much higher intensity level than in their previous meeting. They held Cypress to only 2 first downs the entire second half and also did a good job stopping Fullertion’s running game. My concern from their last meeting is stopping their D-Line. Canyons QB had very little time to do anything the entire night. Should be a good game as Canyon is very hungry for a CIF title.

  3. Marcus Jay Says:

Tustin’s just as hungry too! Canyon’s defense doesn’t want to bang heads and get physical with Tustin’s offense. Mentally, Canyon’s already beat because they just don’t want to get beaten and worn down by Tustin’s physical and bruising style of offense. Anthony Wilkerson’s rushed for over 400 yards against Canyon from last year until now, and should add another 200 yards this Friday night - ATLEAST. And Cypress and Fullerton’s not even close to being the offensive powerhouse and juggernaut that Tustin is.

Tustin’s gotten much better on defense as well.

So get ready folks (and comanche), Tustin’s bringin’ the pain too canyon. AGAIN.

    The Tillers by 4 touchdowns.

    Enjoy The Tustin Show.

  4. Marcus Jay Says:

And the only way Canyon’s going to slow down Tustin is to illegally chop-block Tustin’s lineman - which isn’t allowed. Oh well, there goes that idea. hahahhahahahhaha.

  5. OC FB Fan1 Says:

Canyon is a definate threat. They have a couple of good runners and can throw the ball as well which has been Tustin’s weakness defensively. I agree with Marcus, Tustin IS HUNGRY! They are big, strong and fast. They played decent pass defense against Pacifica including a couple pics. If Canyon resorts to the chop block, they better be careful of not getting penalized. I think this is going to be a great game, not a blow out. Either team can win this game, and whoever does will do it by one TD.

  6. Country Says:

I’m expecting to see a repeat of last week’s game against Pacifca.

Tustin’s D keeps Canyon in check for most of the game. While the offense piles it on. Canyon eventually responds but the game has already been decided by that time.

    So, first 21 wins.

  7. Country Says:

  8. Country Says:

    *first to 21 wins.

  9. crossofiron Says:

Marcus are you a Jamoke? 4 touchdowns,,,,,,

  10. Marcus Jay Says:

I was on the sideline last week when Tustin beat Pacifica. And I literally watched pacifica’s D-line chop-block Tustin’s O-line legs. And the refs flagged pacifica EVERY TIME. As I’ve said before, that’s the ONLY WAY you can slow down Tustin’s offense - if you can get away with illegally cut-blocking!!! Please believe Coach Miller’s going to be watching for it again.

“first to 21 wins”??!! ….. Well, don’t count on it being Canyon folks.

IF canyon were to win, it would be by a touchdown. WHEN TUSTIN WINS, it’ll be by atleast 4 TDs.

  11. Marcus Jay Says:

    crossofiron….what’s a “jamoke”?

    And yes…4 T.O.U.C.H.D.O.W.N.S.!.!.!

Hopefully I spelled it out for you okay!!! hhahahahahahahaha.

Maybe you haven’t paid attention to how Tustin rips Canyon apart most of the time when they play. And Friday night won’t be any different.

  12. footballman Says:

You guys can talk all you want and say how physical Tustin is. Yes Tustin is physical and very tough, but what you dont understand is Canyon is also very physical escpecially on defense. They are no softies and i know they wont throw in the towel. They want this CIF championship bad, they have never had it, and im pretty sure they will fight till death.
    Like I said before……
    Tustin- 24
    Canyon- 45

  13. Marcus Jay Says:

    footballman…..

I can respect that. I never said Canyon was a soft team. And they may be a physical team against other teams. But from what I’ve seen against Tustin throughout the years, Canyon throws in the towel every time. They never want to bang heads and go toe-to-toe with Tustin’s physical and ruthless style of football. And Tustin wants the CIF title just as bad as Canyon does.

    Nothing will change Friday night.

    Tustin by 4 TDs.

    LIKE I SAID BEFORE….

  14. Marcus Jay Says:

    Well I’m over the chit-chat.

See you folks after the game.

    Tustin by 28pts.

    Peace.

  15. matt Says:

Go Canyon! Cypress is behind you and wishes you the best of luck!!!!

  16. Comanche Says:

Hey Marcus you must have forgotton about 2006 when Canyon beat Tustin 13-7 and took second place in the league ahead of Tustin who took third.

  17. Marcus Jay Says:

Hey comanche…I did say MOST OF THE TIME, Tustin beats Canyon. So pay attention; go back and read some of the other comments I made. And no I didn’t forget. It seems as though you’re trying to forget about Tustin smashing Canyon 42-13 earlier THIS YEAR. And at this moment, 2006 is the only thing you have to hang your hat on in reference to canyon beating Tustin.

Nonetheless, hope you enjoy watching the Tillers steamroll canyon this Friday night. AGAIN.

  18. Comanche Says:

You did not say MOST OF THE TIME, you did however say throughout the years…so I was just reminding you of ‘06. And no I have not forgotten the beatting we took. You definately have a strong team and when you first beat us I thought for sure you would be the team to win CIF. Now that Canyon is playing you again, of course I hope that isn’t true. You just sound pretty confident and probably have not seen Canyon play since your win. They have come together and may suprise you Friday night. Remeber one thing….Tustin is SHARING the leaque title this year with Canyon who beat El Dorado who beat Tustin.

  19. Comanche Says:

My bad….you did say MOST OF THE TIME….I was referring to you preivious post….Good luck Friday night and obviously the better team will win.

  20. Marcus Jay Says:

comanche, you’re right. I’m sure Canyon’s gotten better, and may suprise Tustin Friday night.

And remember one thing as well: league titles are irrelevant at this point. It doesn’t matter anymore. We’re playing for a bigger title; one that can’t be SHARED.

“Canyon who beat El Dorado who beat Tustin”…let me finish that last part for you comanche. “…Tustin who beat Canyon”. There you go.

And it’s all good. I enjoy the spirited and competitive trash-talking. LOL.

  21. matt Says:

Beatings happen, but remember it is very difficult to beat a team twice in the same year. Especially in the OC, we seem to carry a curse when it comes to head to head play. Hopefully Tustin is as tough as you say cause they are going to see eight and nine guys in the box all night long!

  22. Comanche Says:

You’re right Marcus….it is irrelevant now. What I do know though is…it is nice to see the Century league having 2 teams in the semi’s. And whoever wins will hopefully go all the way. I read a lot of these posts on the “Southwest Division” and it seems to me that the biggest “trash-talkers” are the La Habra fans. So if they make it to the Finals, one of the Century league teams better take it to them. See ya at the game…..on the Canyon side!!!!

  23. Marcus Jay Says:

matt…you’re right. It’s tough beat a team twice in one season. And Canyon can put 8 or 9 guys in the box - and still get spanked in the trenches! Tustin’s used to seeing 8 or 9 players in the box. So that’s nothing new. Just pray that Canyon’s ready for a couple quick passes to be tossed over their heads for good-measure. Put 10 guys in the box and STILL WON’T MATTER!!!! hahahahahahhaha.

And La Habra? Who? La Habra?..you want to talk about La Habra??!! hahahahahaha. Never heard of em’.

And after Friday night, see you folks next Saturday afternoon at Anaheim Stadium…on the TUSTIN SIDE!!!! hahahahahhahaha

  24. matt Says:

Hmmmmmmm……..? Marcus Jay you sound like a La Habra fan … you sure you aren’t one of them … sounds actually like your a student that goes there running your mouth all day long. Yah maybe you do! Oh wait no matter how rude or arrogent they may be they still don’t sound as much as an idoit as you do. it’s okay though you’ll get yours in due time. keep laughing their big guy enjoy it while you can!

  25. Brian Says:

I remembered when Brandon Lambert (Assistant Coach at THS)and I were with the AD as well as the members from the Board of Education TUSD were interviewing different coaches for the head coaching position at Tustin. It was narrowed down to 6 coaches, and we all had to vote for at least 2 coaches, and who ever gets the most votes, will get the job. Coach Miller came in, and saw that we were the only 2 players in the room, shook everyones hands and looked at both of us and said…WE CAN WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!…lol…Eventhough we would be denied by Santa Margarita every year after that, it was his determination and his confidence that got my vote….
    GO TILLERS!!!

  26. mike reyes Says:

foothill should still be in it
they beat both of the chump teams

  27. matt Says:

Foothill couldn’t beat pacifica! Sorry but foothill cannot cut it when it comes to crunch time mike! Sorry!

  28. Marcus Jay Says:

Matt… first off all, don’t assume I’m a la habra fan. I’m an alumni of THS c/o 99′ for your info. And come see me on the THS sideline this Friday night, run your mouth and call me an idiot to my face. If you can do that, I’ll gladly shake your hand, and you’ll earn my respect. But until then, you should keep your mouth shut youngster! And you’re probably some weak little Canyon fan having nightmares of Anthony Wilkerson & Co. runnin’ through your soft, cupcake, cotton-candy Canyon defense.

And mike reyes….why are you on this blog runnin’ your mouth about foothill?!…foothill?! the little knights are lucky they got beat by pacifica a couple weeks ago. when foothill beat Tustin earlier this season, Tustin wasn’t at full-strength and had some key injuries (Anthony Wilkerson). And we both know Tustin’s far from a chump team, so choose your words carefully. Nonetheless, “IF” doesn’t cut in the playoffs. Pacifica spanked Foothill. I was actually hoping Foothill would win that game, because Tustin was ready to ride the “redemption and vengence” horses into the rematch with foothill. And you saw -or heard - what happened to Pacifica last week. Now, find your way to nearest exit of this blog.

  29. Country Says:

“foothill should still be in it”

And why is that ? Because you went 9-1 during the regular season !? Ha! That doesn’t mean jack come playoff time.

“they beat both of the chump teams”

Chump teams !? These two will be playing Friday night. While you’ll be in the stands.

Chump teams, GTFO here with that **** !

  30. Marcus Jay Says:

    country….

I second your last comment. hahahaaahhahahha.

Coach Miller used to say this come playoff time: “It doesn’t matter how you got here. What matters it what you do when you get here”.

    And that’s real talk.

  31. matt Says:

For alum im concerned with your intelligence seeing that i didnt assume you were a la habra fan, i clearly called you out saying you were the same if not worse then they are with running their mouth. And it is quiet clear that it is the latter of the two. You have no class and i have no problem win or lose walking up to and calling you an idoit to your face. Sadly i shouldnt even be responding to your idoit talk, but you make me laugh so hard, you have no class and no sportmanship so you and that coach of yours go hand in hand.

You know what ill keep talking to yah. that way you keep going on and on about how good you are and youll just be stoking the fire for canyon and its players. piss them off. so they can lay Wilkerson out like they did to Allien of Fullerton

  32. Comanche Says:

Hey Matt….don’t worry about it….it’s all talk. If you were at the game last week, you not only saw Allien get taken out, but you saw his back up get get hit so hard, the ball popped out and it took him a while to get up. I was at the 50 yard line about half way up the stands, and the hit was so hard it sounded like I was on the field. Canyon recovered the fumble and the result….TD. They are totally underestimating Canyon’s defense. If the team is anything like this guy…cocky…they are in for a big surprise. Now for the offense…What does Tustin really have other than a running game? Canyon has been mixing it up really well. Their running game is strong and also their passing game. I am not underestimating Tustin’s defense as I remember our first game. They have a guy #9 that is one hell of a player. He is big, fast and seems to have a knack for knowing where the ball is. If Canyon’s O-Line can take care of him, our offense can operate. We will see come Friday.

  33. CROSSOFIRON Says:

This Marcus Jay guy is not only a joker but a Jamoke. Be glad to see yuou on the sideline. What a bigmouth!

  34. Marcus Jay Says:

crossofiron, comanche, matt……you 3 stooges are very funny.

I’m sure it’ll be a battle come Friday night. And I hope all 3 of you show up on this blog and run your mouth after Tustin spanks your little comanches. But I doubt it.

Well, I’m over the chit-chat. Later losers.

  35. whatever Says:

Really Canyon 45 Tustin 24. Tustin is gonna smash on Canyon like they did last time. Tustin’s tight ends are the biggest ends I have ever seen. Either running back can trust them, and there d-line is made up of the same two players. Chris Robinson and Justice Tausaga both have sacks in the double digits, and average at least 1.2 sacks a game. Canyons quarterback remembers the beating he got the first time they met, and I am pretty sure that the d-line is not going to do anything but.

    TUSTIN-42
    CANYON-21

  36. MJB23 Says:

    Tustin rolls!!!!

  37. LH Football #1 Says:

i think canyon can take this game over tustin

  38. MJB23 Says:

    LH Football#1….

    don’t count on it.

  39. Bubba Says:

Marcus you talk about illegal chop blocks? its NOT considered a chop block unless its outside the box and it is somebody taking on a fullback or puller aiming directly below his waist OR a high low between two people blocking the same guy.Look at game films of Tustins O-Line when they down block they hold.grab.crab block grabbing the backs of d-linemens legs……Miller isnt the ONLY one wary of so called illegal blocks…the umpire will have his hands full calling holding on Tustin all night.UNLESS they suddenly taught clean blocking this week!

  40. MJB23 Says:

bubba, I know exactly what a chop-block is. I meant that it’s illegal to cut the O-lineman’s legs when they’re trying to make a block on the defensive line. So don’t come at me with your little definitions as to what a chop-block is. And I’ve seen plenty of Tustin’s game films. And don’t mistake opponents getting blown off the ball for holding by Tustin’s O-line. You sound like an idiot coming on here running your mouth about what you THINK YOU SEE on Tustin’s game film.

And hopefully you show up tomorrow night to witness Canyon getting blown off the ball - again. You “buster”. Now see your way to the nearest exit of this discussion.

    Tustin Tillers by 28!

  41. ClanPride Says:

    Definitely Canyon over Tustin.

  42. MJB23 Says:

    clanpride….”definitely canyon over Tustin”??!!

Lol. You got it twisted my friend.

I’ll see all you back here after The Tillers light up the scoreboard with 50 points!!!!

  43. matt Says:

    MJB23 -
The only idoit on here besides Marcus Jay is you big guy!
And its totally clear you don’t know what a chop block is … or you would have been able to explain what you were saying the first time. So read the little definitions Bubba leaves for you since it is clear you need them!

  44. ex lancer/clan dad Says:

marcus jay , what up spanky, you have way to much time on your hands and a lot of anger isues. i really doubt you want to see these guys on the sideline unless of course you hide behind the double wing hah!!! the double wing ,snore!!!! been there done that[COLEMAN and CO at troy]wont work when you go against the best D cordinator in the county next week if you make it that far.

  45. MJB23 Says:

    ex lancer/clad dad…

Anger issues huh??!! Wow! Good one! I’ll see any of these little canyon girls on their own sideline. And what makes you think I have anger issues? I’m just engaging in a little friendly game of trash-talk! So don’t take it personal dude.

And matt, blah blah blah blah blah blah! I won’t even go there with you on the whole “chop-block” thing. So know your role, and keep your mouth shut. hahahahahahahaha.

See you on the sideline tomorrow night….losers.

  46. ex lancer/clan dad Says:

marcus jay/mjb23 got 2names huh alot of time for sure spanky. and no we wont see you this fri will see you next sat afternoon at the bigA.CLAN PRIDERULES!!!!!!!!

  47. matt Says:

oh know my ROLE HUH? whats that? laughing in your face when the score board shows all zeros and canyon has won … okay! will do … i dont have a problem with that … or wait i know what would piss you off more … me walking up to you after the game shaking your hand and telling you how hard your team worked and how close they got but that double wing just couldnt get them there, and what a great season they had. Congrats for getting this far big guy! But the ride ends here … canyon at anahiem staduim come next sat afternoon.

  48. ex lancer/clan dad Says:

hey matt , Iguess marcus jay aka mjb 23 got figured out and finally shut up . im pullying for you guys to win on fri .I like an exciting game in the finals, not some boring double wing . Ithink 2 sread offenses plating one another is what needs to be at the BIG A>go clan and go comaches all the way.CLAN PRIDE RULES!!!!!

  49. Chris Tobolski, OCVarsity.com Says:

    Marcus Jay

I promise nothing personal, but you said you graduated Tesoro in 1999 and are going to be on the sideline Saturday night? Nine years after graduating?
I’m all for school spirit and supporting your alma mater, but that’s taking it to the next level, I guess?

  50. Country Says:

“I promise nothing personal, but you said you graduated Tesoro in 1999 and are going to be on the sideline Saturday night? Nine years after graduating?
I’m all for school spirit and supporting your alma mater, but that’s taking it to the next level, I guess?” - Chris Tobolski

You got your schools mixed up Tobolski. He said he graduated from Tustin in 99. Also, Tesoro didn’t open til 2001.

As for being a graduate that’s watching the game on the sidelines. It’s standard practice at Tustin as it is for many schools. Miller lets his former players watch from the sideline if they choose to. I do it myself from time to time. But I prefer watching from the stands where there’s a much better view.

“been there done that[COLEMAN and CO at troy]wont work when you go against the best D cordinator “- ex lancer/clan dad.

Troy runs the Wing T. Very similar to what Esperanza runs. That offense pretty much relies on misdirection. Tustin runs the Double wing. Which is pretty much straight forward.

“Look at game films of Tustins O-Line when they down block they hold.grab.crab block grabbing the backs of d-linemens legs” - Bubba

Kind of hard to grab someone when you’re on all four.

  51. canyonplayer Says:

ok. for all you trash talkers on Canyon.. i got a news flash for you.. canyon will win this game.. we are as confident as ever right now.. i can promise you that canyon will put this monster of a so called “team” when all they have is two running backs, which yes they are good i’ll give them that.. but they don’t know what a team really is.. they are over rated.. now its canyon’s turn to put them down.. see you all at them game when i’m on the field putting Anthony Wilkerson over my knee and spanking him..

    CANYON PRIDE aka FAMILY!

  52. gorilla the till killa Says:

    Canyon 28
    Tustin 0

for all those haters, aka marcus and bubba, your in for a shutout and a shutdown…
all due to one lucky pool shot.

  53. BigE1987 Says:

All I have to say is Canyon over Tustin. If Canyon continues playing the way they have been Canyon will come out on top. I can’t wait for the game tomorrow. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight. LOL

  54. Empire fan Says:

42-13 on 10/24 kind of says it all, i can’t imagine Cnayon has gotten 30 points better in that short of a period, if Tustin plays Tustin footbal and doesn’t have 3 or more turnovers they should win in another blowout, Canyon has no answer for Wilkerson and company and i don’t think they can put up 50 on Tustin’s Defense and that might be how much they need to win this one, looking forward to the Tustin- La Habra showdown i have been predicting for weeks, good luck to both teams and please no injuries

  55. Marcus Jay Says:

    country….

thanks for clarifying that. I did say I graduated from TUSTIN in ‘99. (Goodness time flies! LOL)

Chris Tobolski, think about this for a second: in Texas, alot of alumns at the local high schools there are far worst than what you’re making me out to be!!!! LOL. High School football is a RELIGION in Texas! (but that’s a subject for another day).

ex lancer/clan dad…you only say “I like an exciting game in the finals, not some boring double wing”; because you’d rather not see your little lancers get beat up trying to stop Tustin’s “Wing T” offense!!!! hahahahahahha.

And I love how some people on this blog have to gang up on me with all that “lip-service”! ahahahahhaha. That’s all it is - LIP SERVICE!!! hahahahahahha. But I can appreciate that though.

It’s all good though. I can appreciate your competitive spirit. What can I say?! I love the game of football, and it’s obvious you do too.

Well folks, there’s nothing left to say. Except in the words of Michael Buffer: “LLLLLLLLLLEEEEEETTTS GET READY TO RUUUMMMMMBBBBLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

  56. Marcus Jay Says:

    gorilla the till killa…

    canyon 28
    Tustin 0

LOL. I admire your “wishful” thinking.

  57. ClanPride Says:

MJB23 - You called it, Tustin win with 50+ points. I didn’t really care, I was just rowling up you Tiller fans!
Excited for our game tonight - Go CLAN!

  58. MJB23 Says:

ClanPride….Good morning to you, and I appreciate the “rowling up the Tiller fans”! hahahahahha. It’s all good. And I expect LH to put up big numbers tonight as well.

Yup, I called it! hahahhahahhaha. Alot of these knuckleheads thought I was crazy stating that Tustin would win by atleast 4 touchdowns.
It seems there’s a few folks missing from this discussion, and I knew “they” wouldn’t show up here after last night’s massacre of the comanches. Canyon played with alot of heart, and made some pretty good plays. That “little rascal” #22 for Canyon’s got a motor that always keeps runnin’ and that was fun to watch at times. Those young men played hard and hats-off to them.

    Tustin 63
    Canyon 28

    …speaks for itself folks.

  59. Notorious Says:

How in the hell did Tustin lose to Kennedy earlier this season?

  60. Marcus Jay Says:

notorious…I was thinking the same thing earlier this year when I read about it. They blew a 28-point lead in the 4th qtr of that game!!!

  61. Empire fan Says:

Notorious @ Marcus jay nice to hear you can think lol, the reason they lost to Kennedy is Kennedy outplayed and outscored them pretty simple, ok well actually it was because Wilkerson got hurt and didn’t play in the second half and for some reason once he went out they had trouble moving the ball, they completly dominated the first half and looked like they were going to put 70 up on the board, the second half they couldn’t sustain drives and couldn’t cover Kennedy’s recievers at all, they put pressure on the QB but he made plays and his recievers where wide open,it was a fluke but it happened, Mayfair is asking the same question how did we lose to Kennedy?Granted it was a way down year for Kennedy but they got a couple of quality wins and they’re not an Orange or Garden Grove League team they’re a top notch Empire team with a very good football history!!
