The Calhoun Six to Watch: Laguna Hills vs. Norwalk

December 2nd, 2008, 10:37 pm · 11 Comments · posted by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

Laguna Hills (11-0) vs. Norwalk (8-4)

Friday, 7 p.m., at Laguna Hills High

TV: Cox/3 (delayed)

Outlook: Laguna Hills struggled offensively in its 17-9 first-round victory over Artesia, but the defense didn’t. Last week, the offense showed up to lead a 41-7 rout of Santiago.

The Hawks have allowed 96 points in 11 games. Laguna Hills has held eight of its 11 opponents to under 10 points.

They’re going to have to contend with the three-headed monster that Norwalk relies on at running back: Ray Craig, Jose Guzman and Julio Macias. The trio has combined for 4,041 rushing yards.

Since losing two consecutive Suburban League games, Norwalk has won three consecutive games (Bellflower, Garden Grove and Irvine) by a combined score of 130-22.

Can they score against the Hawks? Will Laguna Hills be able to slow down the Lancers' ground attack?

Go norwalk. smash mouth football from the hood

"smash mouth football from the hood"

The corniest thing I've read on this site.

  • rigorokus says:

    CAbo Wabo...

Norwalk is far and away from being a hood...Its a changing area now that many more affluent people are moving in thanks to the housing boom. Now if we could just condem the one ways an build new homes there it would be complete.thats the best thing..
Furthermore it Smash mouth Football from the LA Suburbs...Now if you want the hood go down the street till you get to paramount, or bell in the inner city....or drive east to south whittier or pico rivera....Now those are hoods.

  • rigorokus says:

    Now back to football....

The hawks barely beat Artesia. It was alot closer than the score dictated. The score was 14 to 9 until late in the 4ths with under 3 minutes remaining artesia turned the ball over to make it 17-9 after a hawks field goal. So artesia gave away the game. They really should have won. Also Artesia plays Iron man football so depth always hurts them..
While i must admit the hawks have speed i do not see how they will contain norwalks run game. It simply does not equate . The depth is larger and the kicking game is better at LHS. This might be the diffrence. For laguna to win they must pass deep on Norwalk and score every time. This will force norwalk to go away from their normal game plan. BUt i see it norwalk 21 laguna hills 17....Norwalk just has too many horses to carry the ball and move the chains....and this is more than a one answer undersized defense can handle.

  • cabo wabo says:

wow !!!!! didn;t mean to hurt yor feeling. Go Norwalk purple & gold. glad I got you talking.Norwalk should win smash mouth football

  • Go Trojans! says:

It should be noted that the Hawks beat an Artesia team that beat Norwalk.
How could the game be closer than the score dictated? It was a 1 td game, which to most people would indicate a close contest! In fact if you want to look at it, the score should have been much bigger as Artesia had one long pass play and a long scramble and that was it for their offense that came in averaging 35 points and 400 yards per game, combined with the Hawks giving the ball away while inside the 5.

We'll see if Norwalk can score on the LH defense, and if Norwalk can stop the Hawk offense. Conversely the Hawks need to limit long Lancer runs, and make big plays.

Mayfair, Paramount and La Serna seemed to only have one answer, and were certainly undersized compared to Norwalk. Artesia had multiple answers, but as soon as they stuck to one, Norwalk couldn't score on them. Guess you'll have to wait to Friday to find out if LH is a "one answer undersized defense"

  • chris says:

Mayfair drilled Norwalk 35 14 and had a t.d. called back.Anyone that has seen the monsoons know they are big and La.county speed .fast.Two of the teams mayfair played are still in it.May drilled everyone in league was14 7 against lakewood going into the 4th quarter. How did they lose to kennedy?Ask tustin.A missed extra point and two missed field goals in the fourth,,,,Watch out the Soons are hot

  • thevine says:

Hey I know one thing, the rest of us in the Southern Division better recognize the Surburban League. These guys are good! See ya next playoffs Surburban League, maybe!

  • ENCORE says:

Remember the first day of practice back in august, you all set goals and you are still "PERFECT"!!! You Hawks are 11-0 and so close to a CIF Championship! Norwalk is Big on the line so get lower and use your speed on Defense to make play's! The Offense will take care of the rest! PaCIFica went down last week so I'm rooting for the Hawks to bring it! Your goal was 14-0 and the RING! HUBBA HUBBA DING DING !!!! CRUNCHBUNCH 4 EVER....

  • 0925 says:

the score of the artesia Laguna hills game should have been 21 9 been LH decided to run the clock down and went for the field goal instead that drive lasted well over 5 minutes. so i have no idea how you can say the game was closer than score dictated. LH has one of the toughest and best defenses in the county and they have proved it time and again. they will certainly not back down to a dbl wing offense. smash mouth football is wat LH is all about. and if you guys take LH lightly youre in for a rude awakening

  • bluebird says:

personally i'd like to see the corona del mar seakings and the laguna hills hawks in the finals. LH stomped CDM i believe 37-7 but CDM threw 3 interceptions in the first quarter finishing the game with 6 turnovers. LH also scored on 4 BIG plays. take away CDM's mistakes and LH big plays and we got ourselves a football game. favoring CDM
