The Calhoun Six to Watch: Corona del Mar vs. Mayfair

December 2nd, 2008, 10:38 pm · 6 Comments · posted by Damian Calhoun, OCVarsity.com since 2004

Corona del Mar (10-2) vs. Mayfair of Lakewood (9-3)

Saturday, 7 p.m. at Newport Harbor High

Outlook: Mayfair began the season with four consecutive losses, two of which came at the hands of Los Alamitos and Lakewood, which later had to forfeit the victory.

Since that start, the Monsoons have been smashing their opponents, outscoring them by a combined score of 360-125.

Mayfair hasn’t been in a close game since a 24-23 loss to Kennedy on Sept. 26.

Brandon Estrada has 1,036 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, Dominique Small has rushed for 1,039 yards and quarterback Jimmy Ohiri has passed for 21 TDs with only seven interceptions.

How will CdM handle all of those weapons?

Look for a steady diet of the Sea Kings’ ground attack. Alex Swigert rushed for 101 yards last week, and quarterback Mitch Sands rushed for 76 and completed eight of 11 passes for 140 yards.

Mayfair’s defense has three players with at least four interceptions.

The Sea Kings have had a remarkable turnaround from last year, when they went 3-6. Does their run end here?

    “Does their run end here?”

I’m afraid that it does. Mayfair will be the fastest team they’ve played against this year and speed kills.

  • Nick Norton says:

Yes, “Country”… Speed does Kill, and CDM lost last week (by far) it’s fastest offensive and defensive player in Dillon Norton (9 TDs overall, 3 TDs on Kick-Off returns 97, 93, and 92 yards, and add to the total, a 60 yard punt return for a TD, as well). CDM will sorely miss the best all-around player in the Southern Division! The absence of Norton will be quite apparent, and hurt CDM’s chances of a title shot!

  • james says:

Blame the coaches for Dillons injury. He should of never been in the game, up 41 points with 5 minutes left, returning a punt.

  • bluebird says:

overall this will be a great game anything could happen.
    i favor Corona Del Mar

  • Empire fan says:

If what JAMES wrote is accurate about the kid being in the game returning a punt when his team was up 41 with only 5 minutes left then yeah that’s on the coaches, what a foolish mistake to have made, no reason to have your best player taking risks in a blowout in the playoffs the risk was not worth the reward, to bad the young man got hurt as that is never good and you need all your weapons when you get into the semi finals of the playoffs, good luck to both teams i like Mayfair to win this one

  • Mark says:

WOW, you Norwalk people should be real PROUD! I guess that “DOUBLE WING T” is working out real well for you tonight. WHOOPS, now lets see if CDM can rout Mayfair tomorrow night and show that the “BEACH BOYS” are for real and can hang with the “BOYS FROM DA HOOD!”
