OC Varsity ~ High school sports talk by the staff of the Orange County Register

Fryer's teams 11-15

December 1st, 2008, 2:07 pm · 8 Comments · posted by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

Here are Steve Fryer's teams 11-15:

11. Los Alamitos (8-3): The Griffins were eliminated by Tesoro in the Pac-5 first round, as son Brian's Tesoro group beat dad John's Griffins. John probably was happier about Tesoro's follow-up victory over Mater Dei in the second round.

12. La Habra (10-2): The Highlanders beat a defending CIF-Southern Section champion with a 23-14 victory over El Dorado in a Southwest Division second-round game. El Dorado was Southwest champion in 2007 and '06. La Habra won the Southeast title in '07. The Freeway League is a Southwest Division league now. La Habra plays '07 Southwest Division runner-up Trabuco Hills this week.

13. Dana Hills (5-5): The Dolphins did not make the playoffs, having finished fourth in the tough South Coast League. They were one of the most improved teams in the county, after last year's 1-8-1 finish.

14. Laguna Hills (11-0): After struggling some in a 17-9 first-round victory over Artesia of Lakewood, the Hawks rolled to a 41-7 triumph over Santiago in a Southern Division second-round game. They had a shutout through three quarters. Laguna Hills plays Norwalk in the semifinals Friday at Laguna Hills.

15. Tustin (8-4): Another big offensive night for the Tillers as they beat Pacifica, 49-21, in a Southwest Division second-round game. They have scored 125 points in two playoff games. Tustin plays host to Century League rival-Canyon in the semifinals Friday. Tustin beat Canyon, 42-13, in a league game.

number 12. c'mon fryer. what do the highlanders got to do to get a little more love'n?

  • 1234 says:

Really? Dana Still in front of two semi finals teams...that makes so much sense. Sure there a SCL team and had a pretty strong sched. but theres a reason they lost 5 games...

TK....the LH Hawks haven't gotten any love from the OCR either. Not that it really matters. Trying to rank teams that range from the Pac-5 to D-10 is like trying to rank baseball teams from MLB to Triple A. Symbolic and fun for discussion.

The Hawks are 11-0, having given up an average of 8.7 points per game. Throw out the 4th quarter scores that occur when the game is in hand and that drops to under 7.

Fryer indicates that the Hawks "struggled some" against Artesia. That struggle resulted in holding the Pioneers, who averaged 35 PPG to 9 points. Gotta love that type of struggle.

The Hawks have been pretty dominant all season, but have yet to crack (I think) the top 12.

Norwalk is going to be a very tough opponent. As always; Go Hawks!

Keep your little rankings Fryer. Tustin would rather (and will) take the SW title this year.

Tustin over Canyon by 30 points this Friday night.
Tustin over LH by 21 next week at Anaheim Stadium.

    Go Tillers!!!

  • sigep15 says:

marcus i like the attitude. ha. being a tiller myself, but i believe fridays game will be by 21+ and la habra will be upset by trabucco hills, then tustin wins in anaheim over the mustangs by 21+ again. top running back in the county, scary to think hes only a junior. good luck to everyone this weekend.

  • highlanderFan says:

LH will work hard to enjoy the fruits of victory in Anaheim Stadium. Anyone who opines that Tustin or any other team will post 21+ points over the Highlanders will find that is not so easy. Let's look at the last two years, hmmm, only much more highly touted teams Los Al and San Clemente could post a single touchdown better than the La Habra team. I feel the heavy lifting for LA Habra is this weekend to beat the Mustangs. Trabuco Hills has shown steady improvement all season, and hopefully all their players will be able to play.

I am curious where Tustin is getting 30 points on Canyon this Friday? Do they have "rollover" points from a previous game? That is the only way they could do that. I might be alone, but I think Canyon will knock the tiller off the Tustin rudder early and send them to the stands to watch the CIF final.

The best of luck to all the kids on every team who have played so well.
