Here are Steve Fryer's teams 1-5:
1. Tesoro (12-0): Is this a team of destiny? The Titans keep getting turnovers at crucial times, and always come up with a big play just when they need one which they did in their 38-35 victory over Mater Dei in a Pac-5 Division second-round playoff game. They also have displayed resiliency the past two weeks with close playoff victories over Los Alamitos and Mater Dei.
2. Orange Lutheran (10-2): This is the best defensive team in the county. The guys at Tesoro might argue that, and they have a great point. But Lutheran controlled two excellent quarterbacks, Mater Dei's Matt Barkley and Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks' Ryan Kasdorf, like no other team has. The Lancers' 24-14 victory over Note Dame sets up a 1-vs.-2 showdown, Tesoro-Orange Lutheran, in a Pac-5 semifinal game Saturday at Santa Ana Stadium.
3. Mater Dei (8-4): The Monarchs simply got beat by a better team in their 38-35 loss to Tesoro in a Pac-5 second-round game. Matt Barkley threw four interceptions, two returned for touchdowns, as he was under pressure all game. It is not often that Mater Dei loses the interior-line battle, but that happened against Tesoro. Still, the Monarchs did have a season in which they won a share of the championship of the best football league in California: the Trinity League.
4. Mission Viejo (10-2): Turnovers, difficulty protecting quarterback Allan Bridgford and an inability to stop Lakewood's running game led to a 28-7 loss in a Pac-5 second-round playoff game. Bridgford was sacked five times and threw two interceptions. The Diablos were able to produce some long drives, but turnovers killed them. Their other loss this season was to Tesoro.
5. Servite (7-4): The Friars were eliminated in the first round by Lakewood, as Servite decided to go for two points and the victory instead of the PAT and the tie. The two-point effort, a decision Coach Troy Thomas made after an offsides penalty moved the ball halfway to the goal line, to a yard-and-a-half from the stripe, was a pass that fell incomplete. If I am the coach in that situation, I am trying for two points, too.

tesoro, soon to be 10 -1
Actually, erase that....Tesoro soon to be 12-1
Tesoro will be 13-0. O-Lu tends to choke in the biggest games.
Mission #4. Why? They got beat pretty badly this week.
I beg to differ Mr. Knows. O-lu doesn't choke in the biggest games. Their loss in the Pac 5 finals last year was not a choke. It was a hard fought game where Poly squeezed out a win. O-lu's losses this year were not in the "biggest games." The first of which couldn't even be considered a big game. The second one was big...but not THAT big. In fact they went to the "biggest game" a few years back and they did not choke. I would also like to point out that Tesoro is not the "biggest game" that you speak of. They are two great teams and it will be a heck of a battle. Check your facts Mr. Knows before you look silly again.
Tesoro 1, actually you will become Tesoro 12-1, lol,
OLu is going to beat you. AND we will all be happy about it.
Let me say that again so that you hear it,
OLu will BEAT you and WE WILL ALL BE HAPPY.
Hey Hey Bye Bye.
heydude...you are acting your age again. Behave and show some class. I will no longer read these posts...you are just so hateful. It's just a game! We have bigger problems in this world than who wins a football game. This is suppose to be fun!
I agree MarinaMomma.
O-Lu is far from a choke!
Tesoro QB Picazo is the best at his position and I hope he gets to meet Long Beach Poly so he can test a top level defense.
Who is Preston King? This guy is has a knack for being in the right spot on offense and defense, he is one heck of player. I wish he played for LB Poly. I don't know much about the Titans, but they have blitzkreg style offsense that is fun to watch.
On defense the DB's are slow and out of postion. Ask coach Jr. Barnes how many missed tackles there were in Mater Dei game, I would guess about 25 to 30. They give up too many EXTRA yards after the first contact.
It was bad luck that OLU didn't win PAC-5 on that fluke play last year.
Good luck to TESORO and Orange Lutheran
Hopefully LONG BEACH POLY will be waiting
I beg to differ with Mr. Fryer's remarks that Mater Dei was beaten by better teams. Unfortunately, MD was not beat by better teams in either the OLu game or the Tesoro game. Count the points scored on interceptions...MD beat itself! Defense just spent too much time on the field. But, what is done is done....good luck OLu !
David from Anaheim Hills-- Tesoro will not have to wait to play Poly to play a top level defense, they will get that when they play Orange Lutheran.
Forgive me for saying this Football 1, but usually the better team does win. Don't make excuses. If MD was the better team, they wouldn't make those mistakes, and they could get their defense off the field so their offense could play a little.
Both of MD's last 2 losses, they were the better team. Especially in the Lutheran game. A poor coaching decision led to MD's loss in that one, much like I think poor coaching decisions probably played a part in the Tesoro game, although I only watched the game once through on cox, and it was late.
If you look at Kunau's whole history of coaching at Lutheran he was a choke, but in the last 5 years or so he's been able to win the big games, prior to 2004 he was 0-5 in CIF title games.
Tesoro's offense isn't what scares me, it's whether or not Tesoro can force turnovers against a team that doesn't really throw that much.
MD debate? There is no debate; scoreboard, baby! The "better" team generally does not lose and *certainly* does not beat themselves. Poor coaching decisions? Right, like Rollo doesn't know what he's doing. He's only been at this 25 years or so. MD had a so-so team with an excellent quarterback, who, despite the hype, is still learning. In HS sports you win with seniors, it's a fact. MD finished exactly where they deserved, as did my team, as will OLu and Tesoro. Glad to see it come down to two quality programs, here's hoping the winner can give Poly a run. Now that is a team I am tired of seeing win! Bring back the days when MV handed the LB boyz their lunch and win one for the OC!
If MD runs the ball that entire last drive in the Lutheran game they would have kicked the FG and won. MD was the better team, but Rollo tried to put it too much on Barkley when clearly Hytche would have carried the team to the victory in that one.
IF...IF...IF...
Mater Dei DIDN'T run the ball Mr. Notorius. O-Lu got the field goal. Mater Dei Lost and O-Lu won. IF Mater Dei would have done what you speak of they might have won...but they didn't. Don't call them the better team when they clearly lost the game.
go olu. I have never heard of cheering for the other team, or singing hey hey bye byek, as does tesoro at their games when they are winning, as a horrible thing.
I gues when all of their stands dies it it is okay, because it is their chidlren that do it? Does that make sense.
Not hatefule, just saying...
GO OLu!
After the Olu win I bought 2 papers. The register and the LA times.
Steve Fryer seems to want to only talk about Servite. In the win against Notradame he said "Lemon saves Olu" or something like that. He dismissed giving Olu credit for a great almost mistake free game.
Reading the LA times I saw that even they gave acalades to the Olu team.
What is it about Sten Frye that he is so often one sided in his reporting.
Im not sure but Im starting to think that maybe there is more balanced reading( la times) out there and more interesting web sites then what I am getting from Steve Fryers oc Varsity......
What does every one think.....
Lutheran's gotten enough love from the Register even when they were in lower divisions. Hell, they even gave Jason Whieldon OC Player of the year when they were in division 11, when Leinart was QBing for MD. So it's not like Lutheran hasn't gotten its share of reporting.
MD had more talent than Orange Lutheran this year, and was the better team. I stick by my statement, it was just a lapse in judgment by the offensive playcaller, doesn't mean they weren't the better team.
Sanity says: Do you remember when it was Mission Veijo Diablos moment, then Servite, then Loyola, then Mater Dei, then Los Alamitos, then Orange Lutheran all good programs, but there has been one constant..........Long Beach Poly 17 major division football championships and year in and year out they fighting for another title. They have fallen flat many years but when September comes around and you talk Calif. High School football there is one program on the tip of everyones tounge. Long Beach Poly. Just ask any coach... they will tell you the same thing.
I wish the Orange County line was six miles north so Poly be be included in the richness of OC football. Heck Los Alamitos High school is less than one mile from a friends house in Long Beach.
So open your arms and maybe give Poly your support?
the kids that do it at the tesoro games are freshman at tesoro with no understanding of respect. Anytime they do it, they get instantly stoped by the parents and older kids at tesoro, but i have been to most of MD's games and they chant "thanks for practice" to other respectfull teams, so there is no argument there. But bottom line, the stands have nothing to do with the respect level of the teams on the field
We now know who the winner of the Tesoro/OLu will meet in the PAC-5 Final, it is Long Beach Poly. Winners over Lakewood 20-10. You have to give Poly a lot of credit , they have the worst QB I have ever seen. Yet the Jackrabbits are on the cusp of winning another CIF major division championship.
I think OLU will win, though I would like to see TESORO and Preston King meet the boys from Long Beach.
