Boys soccer
Preseason top 10

1. Fountain Valley: The Barons return eight starters and 14 players from the team that won the Sunset League in 2007.

2. Servite: The Friars are an experienced group this year with eight starters returning, including All-Trinity League goalkeeper Chris Violas.

3. Esperanza: The Aztecs just might be the most talented team in the county.

4. El Toro: The Chargers have 10 starters coming back to the lineup this season, two of them were all-CIF players in 2007.

5. La Habra: Led by Jonathan Prieto (14 goals and 16 assists in 2007), the Highlanders have a good chance to win their third consecutive CIF title.

6-10: Saddleback, Santa Margarita, Los Alamitos, Mater Dei, Santa Ana Valley

Fountain Valley should be solid! They have quite a bit of talent. We will see if they can win their league again and do something in CIF. I have my doubts

I'm curious to know if Servite boosters pay for the pub on the register? Every year there is massive hype and every year they choke. I know, this year will be very different. Right?

    Wrong!!!!

Esperanza has nothing, just a lot of big physical kids that sometimes translates into wins in high school soccer. Ranked 3? Not a chance!

Have not seen much of El Toro so I can't give much insight on their ranking. Let you all know when I catch a game.

La Habra? Whose gonne score goals? their scoring machine is gone. Unless they have some kids step up or their midfield guy score all the goals I doubt they will repeat.

Saddleback should be higher returning a ton of guys on their roster.

SM and Mater Dei? Big question mark with coaches gone and most of their top players playing academy. Los Al? Their main guys are all in college.

Lets see how things play out in preseason. Good luck to all and look for Johnson to provide insight in the absence of our loved Miguel Melendez. Any idea where he has gone?

Only four teams mentioned in 6-10. Who's No. 10?

  • Petros says:

Miguel Melendez is now prep sports editor at the Pasadena Star-News

  • The preseason Top 10 has been corrected. Santa Ana Valley was left out of the original post as the No. 10 team.

And glad to see the interest in boys soccer is already starting. We're planning to do a lot more coverage of boys soccer on a regular basis this season, and we hope to get a lot of interaction going with the passionate fans in O.C.

Looks like Aliso Niguel (and J Serra) should be in the top 10 as well as they are in the finals of the Aliso Cup. Los Alamitos and Esperanza didn't make it out of pool play and Servite lost in the semis along with Dana Hills. And J Serra is the big surprise as they are in the finals as well after beating Servite 3-0. It is early in the season but good starts for both Aliso and J Serra.
