Update on Mater Dei’s Christian Maldonado

November 29th, 2008, 5:54 pm · 35 Comments · posted by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

Mater Dei football standout Christian Maldonado, who took a hard hit Friday in a Pac-5 Division playoff loss at Tesoro, has progressed but was expected to remain at Mission Hospital on Saturday night, Monarchs coach Bruce Rollinson said in an e-mail.

He was held overnight (Friday) for observation,” Rollinson wrote. “Doctors are pleased with his progress.”

Rollinson said after the game that medical personnel thought that Maldonado suffered severe whiplash.

before anyone comes on and starts saying half truths..
ryan bennet #22 that made the hit was not even running while making the hit…
he threw his arms up when Maldonado was running at him..even with the 2 steps you dont have enough time to react to move or get out of the way…
    it wasnt a cheap shot..
yes it looks like it in slow motion but it was not.

  • SuperFan3 says:

I also forgot to say that I hope he recovers fully..it was an excellent game and the best sporting event I have ever been to.
    Hands down great football

  • mdfan says:

did you hear what rollo did to the non-starters at half time….he let only the starter go into the locker room and locked the doors on the other kids and left them outside….now to me that is low those kids worked just as hard all year and to leave them hanging like that is just wrong. rollo prieches about unity and right the just deunified them you should practice what you preach rollo!!!!!

  • griffinsmom says:

Late hit- does it have to be deliberate? Is it like running into the kicker? No one has said it was on purpose. But it was late. That aside- Congrats Brian.

  • jackson says:

Wait, Rollo really locked out nonstarters, that is messed up if true.

  • notstuckup says:

Superfan, can you tesoro people EVER FACE REALITY, you are dirty, you play cheat shots, you never get called on them. You are so full of yourselves that you cant even keep your mouth shut when there is a kid in the hospital because of one of your plays. GEEEEEZ, get over yourself.

When the striped shirts start to look at you on Saturday night, it will be…………HEY HEY GOODBYE TESORO

  • titanpride51 says:

first of all, best wishes to Christian Maldonado!

    notstuckup-

Why don’t you get over the fact that Tesoro beat Mater Dei and is clearly a better team this season? It is so ridiculous that the second Mater Dei loses the refs get blamed for not calling anything against Tesoro. Maybe if Barkley did’nt throw 4 interceptions in the first half and if the recievers could actually catch like Preston King, Zack Bevan, and Brett Gudim, then you wouldn’t have to scapegoat the refs for not making a personal foul call on the play with Maldonado.

Aside from the interceptions, Barkley put the ball on the money all night and Tesoro is very fortunate for all the drops. This is the Titans year, they should do very well against OLu’s run game and Poly or whoever it may be should they reach the championship. With Hodgdon anchoring the Dline and a terrific trio of linebackers, I don’t see why Tesoro couldn’t run the table against these run game teams like olu and poly

Coach Barnes is a fantastic coach and the kids on the team aren’t the least bit dirty.

    Tesoro’s 4 goals:

    Improve every day: check
Beat rivals Mission and capo: check
    Win SCL: check
WIN pac 5 and state: COMING SOON!!

  • footballfan90 says:

Why so bitter against Tesoro? They aren’t full of themselves, they came out and beat a very good Mater Dei Team. As for the late hit, if you watch the game on Cox3 #22 Bennet’s hit wasnt intentional by any means, and the hit wasnt hard, it was just an unlucky spot for Maldonado to get hit in. Enough with the arguing about late hits and who’s full of themselves, lets just hope the kid gets better.

    hey notstuckup

Our boys do not play dirty, they play football! We are sorry that Maldonado got hurt and wish him to be well soon!

I think I hear jealousy in your words. The reality is were going to the semi and your not! It’s great to be a Tesoro Titan

  • SuperFan3 says:

notstuckup has hated on tesoro ever since we beat mission..
he has no life and blogs the exact same thing on every single blog possible…

  • DOWNYOURTHROAT says:

Please keep the comments clean….I know all those coaches ….so whatever happened or didn’t happen let’s all think about how much time the coaches/players/parents and schools spent thru the boosters raising money, volunteering, etc..to field these championship teams. If you made it to the playoffs-then you at least have accomplished …if you win and go to the next level then you are overcoming. A championship takes alot of faith-It’s like everything has to come together for that one perfect instance to accomplish it.
So for all the TRASH TALKING and epithets please keep it clean.
If you are vanquished from the playoffs-then except…become a better spectator/player/coach and help out where needed. Please keep it clean!

  • DOWNYOURTHROAT says:

For all the players that may have been hurt….keep up the prayers for them….Good season Mater Dei-may your loss be your accomplishment

  • justsotipical says:

Gosh, just such a typical response from a Tesoro person, “You must be jealous” everyone must be jealous of us……….I can’t believe you guys.

  • STNRAIDERS03 says:

Shame on Coach Rollins for only letting the starters in the locker-room and locking out the rest of the team. I guess his true colors came out when pressure is on. It’s like going shopping with your 3 yr. old and forgetting him at the store. OOOOOPPPPPSSSSSS!!!!!!! Yes they had another good season, but there’s one thing that some of those boys are not going to forget. They were not part of THE MIGHTY MONARCHS after the 1st half . You live on your passing game and well you know the rest. MDHS—–REMEMBER THE TITANS————–The Giant Slayers of ‘08

  • notstuckup says:

I just find it horrible that this article is title ” Updat on Maldonado” and you tesoro people have turned it into lets defend ourselves.

Pathetic. You just don’t get it.

  • footballfan says:

    Notstuckup:

Why is it that you feel so compelled to comment on anything to do wth Tesoro, since you are neither a student or parent from that school? The football players and cheerleaders have all filled out a huge Get Well card for Christian Maldonado and have sent their prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
People feel compelled to defend themselves from your ridiculous attacks, since obviously you are a very bitter and upset young man from Mission Viejo High. Why are you so upset? It has been weeks since we played your team and I believe everyone is long over it.
Please move on for your own well being.

Prayers and Best wishes to the Maldonado Family and everyone in the Mater Dei Family

  • notstuckup says:

    blah blah blah blah blah

Again, it is not about you right now. Wishing Maldonada a fast recovery to full health.

  • ET Fan says:

Holy cow, you people are amazing. I was one who wanted to truly get an update on Maldonada, and ran into this *&%#. I caught the game on Cox 3 and saw what had happened and actually cared about the kids progress. I did not see it as an intentional late hit, but I am sure my opinion will be discounted on this blog. Hope he is fully recovering.

  • mustangs says:

maldonados the best DB in orange county

  • footballife says:

This is crazy, you people are so self indulged. Can you just shut up about yourselves, and actually have a post for this injured man. NO MORE TESORO DDEFENSIVE @#$@!! Can we just have iinformation about the young man in the hospital. Tesoro, life is sometimes about others!

  • heydude says:

Prayers to Chris Maldonado. Everything else being said here is not needed. Just stop!

  • Rams says:

MDFAN and STNRAIDERS03, why are you so surprised at Rollo’s behavior towards the non-starters. Have not you noticed how arrogant this coach is!!!! Has it taken you so long to notice this now, you have got to be kidding me….. In regards to MD’s loss, not surprised………By the way, no Trinity league team will reach the final.

  • heydude says:

    GO OLu!

Trinity league it will be Rams. You can say what you want, but come Sunday morning, you will be packing your lockers and movin on to another sport.

Hey Hey GOODBYE, da da da da, da da da da, Hey Hey So LONG!

New man on top, and it is OLu!

  • LHFanFromChino says:

    HEY GRIFFINSMOM,
Why are you still blogging? LOS AL is ELIMINATED, and should have never made the playoffs in the first place. I cannot wait until La Habra goes to Gahr High next year, and socks your boys in the mouth! Los Al was over rated all year.

  • heydude says:

LHFanFromChino, what are you talking about?

  • LHFanFromChino says:

    OH nevermind. LOL

  • mdplayer says:

i am moving up to varsity next year for mater dei. I didn’t know anything about what Coach Rollo did at halftime till now. This really made me lose respect for him

  • heydude says:

great news that Chris is home and well. Prayers answered.

  • STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com says:

My alma mater, Saddleback, went 0-10. I’m still on here. Griffinsmom, you stay, too.

  • JoeCinOC says:

That’s funny Steve!! I didn’t know you went to Saddleback.

  • JoeCinOC says:

So Steve Fryer, what do you think about all this public vs. private debate? Do you think recruiting matters? Anyone from the OC Register staff can answer. I’m interested in hearing your responses.

  • JoeCinOC says:

I mean, we do have a 75% public school representation in the PAC 5 semifinals. Lakewood beat Servite and Tesoro beat Mater Dei.

  • STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com says:

The CIF-Southern Section did a big report that showed the percentage of CIF championships won by private schools is equal to the number of private schools in the section. And many of the top public schools in the county have had many top players from outside of their attendance areas — Brea girls basketball, Troy girls basketball … and the number of former Catholic school guys who transferred to public school programs — Clark Evans, QB, from Santa Margarita to Los Alamitos; Mark Sanchez, from SM to Mission Viejo; John Michael Davis, LB, from SM to Tesoro … it is a long list. And it is a long topic.

  • JoeCinOC says:

So if I understand correctly, it all evens out?

  • Notorious says:

What that study failed to point out was the fact that not every section has private schools in it, and therefore are obviously not winnable by a private school. A more accurate study would only include sections that have private school teams in them.
