Why Tesoro won: Mater Dei outgained Tesoro, 445-353, but it was the play of Tesoro’s secondary in the first half that was the biggest factor in the outcome. The Titans’ four interceptions in the first half not only prevented the Monarchs from racking up more yards and points, they led to 14 points for Tesoro thanks to returns for TDs by Preston King and Brett Gudim.
It wasn’t all Barkley’s fault: I counted nine dropped balls for Mater Dei’s receivers in the game. Sure, QB Matt Barkley throws pretty hard but these were mostly catchable balls. Barkley’s first interception deflected off his receiver. Still, the USC commit also forced some throws that certainly hurt the Monarchs, too.
Biggest drive of the game: Tesoro’s scoring drive in the final 1:59 of the first half was a killer for Mater Dei. The Monarchs had cut their deficit to 24-21 but the Titans pushed their lead back to 10 on Zach Bevan’s touchdown catch with 25 seconds left. Even more frustrating for Mater Dei had to be that its defense forced a fumble on the opening possession of the second half that could have led to potentially a go-ahead score.
Unsung hero: Tesoro wide out Zach Bevan. On the Titans’ late scoring drive in the first half, he had four catches for 53 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown.
Unsung hero #2: Tesoro defensive coordinator Matt Poston. The Titans aggressive blitz packages compliment the talents of King and Gudim on the edge. Poston’s unit also shows many different looks and plays a physical brand of defense.
Gutsy play calling: Tesoro coach Brian Barnes decided to go for it on fourth-and-2 from the Monarchs’ 38 leading 17-14 late in the first half. Sure, the Titans were probably out of field goal range but a miss would have given Mater Dei excellent field position and perhaps the momentum to take the lead. Instead, Tesoro QB Robbie Picazo connected on a short, inside slant to Preston King for a score.
Curious play calling: On Mater Dei’s second possession of the second half, the Monarchs went 3-and-out with three pass attempts. Running back Jaron Hytche had two touchdown runs on his past three carries, so why not run him more? Hytche had only four carries in the second half. He had 13 for 97 yards in the first half.
Big penalty: Both teams committed very few penalties. But the Monarchs’ committed a personal foul on their final drive of the game that really hurt their chances. The penalty came after Barkley scrambled 17 yards to his 47 with 54 seconds left. That 15 yards penalty and that time run off the clock ended up being huge.
Classy ending: Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson went out of his way to congratulate Tesoro’s Preston King for his play. King had two INTs to tie Brett Gudim for the team lead with nine. Combined with his offensive production, King is this year’s Hunter White. He’s the best football player in the county.

Of course MD gets penalized a “personal foul”…but no “personal foul” for late hit on MD #21. Neutral refs….no way!!!!
Sounds like MD was out-coached. Good job Tesoro, great play calling.
Nevermind. I found them on Web. Waytogo Dan!
We Dominate, what else is there to say?
Tesoro will go all the way.
Instead of dogging Tesoro for a late hit on Maldonado after MD was penalized for One. Watch the replay on Cox. (NO LATE HIT)
YYYAAAAAY TESORO!!!! It was definitely the greatest game I have seen our school play this yeaar. Mater deis matt Barkley is an amazing qb…he seems too good for his team with his power and speed of throws. Good luck to him at USC and the NFL. This game proves that we are here to stay on top!
Mater Dei was a very worthy opponent, but in the end the superior team won. MD fought back each time Tesoro opened up a lead, but they just didn’t have the talent across the board to compete with a bigger, quicker, more experienced lineup. Talent & coaching usually take the prize, and last nite’s game was no exception. Picazo, King, Gudim, Z. Mitchell, the O-Line & a swarming Defense were just too much for the Monarchs.
Sorry to see C. Maldonado injured…….. Hope he recovers quickly and has no lasting effects. Prayers for him.
Tee up O. Lu now…………
NEVER NEVER NEVER Titans NEER get any calls during ANY GAME ALL SEASON….it is time the striped shirts take a llok at the steroid boys, and start calling all of their NASTY FOUL plays they have gotten away with all year!!!!!! Then the real football begins. Lets see if they win when they cfant CHEAT!
Amazing game for Tesoro!!!!! hey waz up footballlife u said we were goin to lose to Los AL but we beat them!!!! amzing stuff from coach Barnes, staff, and the players. Matt Barkley is one hell of a QB and he should do well at USC and possibly could get nominated for Heisman!!! amazing job Tesoro, hopefully we can get a WIN against Orange Lutheran.
Whenever any team plays as hard, is coached as well, and shows they can match up against the favored Mater Dei squad, a lot of people cry foul. It’s normal. But Preston King has proven he is the best player in Orange County this year, even better, at his position than Barkley at his! Yet he hasn’t been scouted, as far as I can tell, by any serious Div I or Div II Schools… What’s up with that?! There have been many great college and even NFL players his size and stature. With his speed, agility, great mind and strength, he’d help any school at any level succeed! Come on Scouts, Take a Serious Look at Preston King!!!!!
The Barkley era is over. He was Gatorade player of the year last year, but with all his forced throws this year, maybe there’s a Cool-Aid trophy for him this year. In my opinion, Mater Dei blew a good chance to go all the way, by hardly ever going for sustained drives and instead going for the spectacular yard-gainers. Orange Lutheran, and Servite for that matter, never do that, and until the Mater Dei offensive coordinator catches on, they will always be one or two games short of a complete season.
The whole idea of a public school (with boundary restrictions, coaching stipend restrictions, no recruiting ability, etc) beating any private school in a playoff (whether football, baseball, basketball, etc) is pretty impressive. You’re basically putting up a squad of kids who all live within 4 miles of each other against a county all-star team with near unlimited resources for coaching, training, etc.
This is true not only in OC, but everywhere in America. I would love to see a playoff system where private schools compete against each other - across state boundaries. You would see some excellent competition…..
Really, you are so pathetic. First of all, your cheerleaders probably deserved a penalty. For something, if not just because they are your cheerleaders, that is penalty enough I would say. Second, you will go down, and when you least expect it. AND your QB at USC, yeah, he can play, when our MV GRAD, is done, then maybe your guy can have a chance!!!!! Hey, that was sweet! Get in line QB!
You couldn’t ask for a better game, but the once classy coach is classless. It has quickly spread and verified that the non-starters on the Mater Dei Football team were not allowed to enter the locker room during halftime. This was a humiliating act for all those players that gave their hearts out every day to get your starters prepared. Perhaps you should have kept your coaching staff out too. YOU HAVE LIED TO THE YOUNG MEN. ITS NOT ABOUT THEM–IT ABOUT YOU AND YOUR ARROGANT STAFF.
tesoro does not use steroids.
the game is played fairly and without use of drugs to supplement weight gain.
Oh really, then read the article where it talks about the weight gain over the summer on players named in the article. I think your own coach speaks in the article, but you will have to look for it and read it for yourself to make sure of all of the information. Hey, it is printed, we read it! Funny how that works, then you all get all upset about the information like it is our fault it was printed and we could read it. Google some of your D line guys, and see what info comes up! Its easy, go to GOOGLE or YAHOO or whatever it is you use, and put in the names of the players, all kinds of info comes up. Brothers, that were football players, where they live, las flores, coto, ladrea, yeah its on some football player listing website. You know the kind that ranks them. I found it by chance one day. COOL.
OK, footballlife, you need to get a LIFE!!! Bitter grapes if I have ever heard it!!
You went over the line with the cheerleader comment! Put on a skirt and our girls will challenge you anytime. You are the one that is PATHETIC!! It takes a real man to pick on cheerleaders. You are an @$$!!!
Hey, how did MV do last night? We’re still goin’..and your season is OVER!!! Victory is SWEET!!!
GO TITANS!!!
Is it true that Mater Dei only allowed their starters to enter the locker room at half time?” How humiliating for the rest of the team and all of the other players that have worked so hard together all year long. What a way to end your senior year or your football season.
Rollo…What happened to “there’s no i in team?”
They had an amazing season, but that decision was ugly and pathetic and I would think most of the other parents are hurt and angry too.
NOTE TO FOOTBALL FANS. A) If your quarterback gets picked off 4 times, and 2 get run back for TDs in the first half of the biggest game of the year, you have greatly increased your odds of loosing. B) If your quarterback throws 6-10 perfect passes to receivers in the second half of the biggest game of the year, and they flat out drop the ball, you have greatly increased your odds of losing. If both A and B happens in the same game, you have a 99.9% chance of loosing. ps: Did you hear the announcers on the live webcast say at halftime (when they did not know they were on the air) that one of Mater Dei’s long TD’s should have been called back for offensive holding?
I am just laughing. I love how the cheer mom comes out running. But seriously, how sad for those MD boys. Their coach does not deserve the team he has if that really happend.
Boys, you were great.
How can Mater Dei’s administration tolerate the behavior of the head coach? For a coach to exclude”none starter” team members from the half time pep talk is as low as it gets! Forget that these boys are verbally assaulted daily and belittled routinely. Forget that they are led to believe they are weak to bolster the confidence of the ” starters” Forget that in spite of that they are asked to give 110% to make their teammates champions. But when the chips are down, they told to wait outside while the “real team” is motivated. For a Catholic institution that values an inclusive doctrine, I guess MD football is not very inclusive. It is elitist and definitely not very Christian. These young men who have given their all were treated no better than dogs, shame on you Bruce!
is footballlife just jealous because we have rich kids and live in a nice affluent area at tesoro? get over it! just because we have the money doesn’t mean our players will go spend it on drugs! they just pack on the pounds by eating and weights.
yay tcheermom.
In regards to the “exclusion factor” mentioned about the MD halftime…let’s see…small parking lot (but enjoyed the 2 mile walk through the hills!); small bathrooms; small vistor seating area EQUALS small vistor locker room. It’s kind of hard to fit 60 kids (BIG kids) into a room built for 30…No one was being “excluded” is my guess based on all the evidience we fans had on the facilities we experienced. However…GREAT field and a nice location…next time bulldoze some hills and make some more parking!!
That Sucks that the MD players were excluded from going into the lockerroom and Reality Check the locker room that the away teams uses is the girls locker room which is just as big as the boys.
What a game!! Too bad for the negative press from the MD halftime fiasco, the focus should be on these young men and their efforts!
Go Titans!!
Reality check….Check you facts before you comment on the “exclusion factor”! It was clearly overheard by serveral players walking back to the locker room that Rollo said ” I only want to talk to my starter, the other F@#!@#’s are done with the season and they don’t give a shit”. So, YES, the non-starters were intentionally being excluded. Don’t add insult to injury to these players that were treated like crap!! Rollo screwed up, and this time alot of the parent got wind of it but as usual someone like you will come to his rescue.
Coach Rollo- Your season is also over. Your constant humiliation has come to bite you in the ….. You have humiliated several kids throughout the year. And now its your turn to get humiliated. You owe these kids a public apology. Anything else is unacceptable. I hope you get reprimanded for leaving these kids standing in the cold. i know its football–we’ve heard you say that at every speech. But even football players are treated with dignity and respect. Maybe its time to look at your coaches– you have not won anything in over 8 years.
Tesoro fans, your true colors are shinning through your nicely wrapped exteriors. You do all think you are better than all the rest of us, not just on the field, but in real life. I love how eventually, all things come out to be true. You are better because you have money, is that what I just read? Does that mentality translate to your children? How sad for you and your families. I thought the comments made on here about games, and refs, are all in good discussion, but coming out and saying you are all better than everyone else because you have more money, well that just takes the cake. GO OC!!!!!!! Maybe the OC show is more like real life than everyone was hoping.
Also, if the MD coach and his staff did that, they should ALL be looking for another job!
didn’t mean that we were better. just asking if that was the impression. money does not make any better players or people on the field, it has nothing to do with the game. did not mean for it to come across that way. i was just wondering if that was the impetus for all of the steroid comments. my bad.
too late.
but thanks for the apology.
Wow…as I said I was “guessing” as to what may have happened based on my “fan” experience with the facilities; but I stand corrected. I am in full agreemtent with comments from MD Fan and Concerned Fan based on the facts presented here. Someone from the coaching staff owes all of us an explanation or an apology, although I doubt one will be forthcoming. I have talked to some other MD parents and they are shocked too. How humiliating for ALL the players…as weird as it may seem…this takes a lot of sting away from the loss; however, someone had to lose, I just wish the refs had stayed out of the game during the last 2 minutes of the game and I think we all know MD would have won (at least that’s how it works in my world…!).
Monday morning, they should be fired.
And realitycheck, you are right, had the refs done their job right, MD would have won this game.
This is what I have said all along about tesoro, they win, because they never get called on ANYTHING!!!!
After so much harm in the last weeks, and so much hatred, lets pray that the just prevail in the end. We are taught that, so keep your prayer chain going for Maldonado, and pray that the rightous team win on Friday. The Lord is mighty and will not let you done.
Congratulations to Coach Barnes on winning the ABC7 High School Coach of the Year Award.
A well deserved award for Coach Barnes
He has done a wonderful job with the Tesoro program
and we all can not wait to see what it to come.
Congratulations to the entire Tesoro Football program
Once again notstuckup talking on a Tesoro blog..
ever since Tesoro beat Mission all he has to say is how Tesoro never gets called for anything and bla bla bla..
did you go to the Dana Hills Game?
Because if you were and you are still thinking that Tesoro doesnt get called then you might want to get your eyes checked…
Have you been to any of the Tesoro games all year? or are all of your observations based on stuff that you read on the internet?
Hey notstuckup! Maybe we are better. We can spell “shining” correctly!
I think what happened to the “non-starting” Mater Dei football players at halftime is just another sad example that the game and how to treat young men has passed the Mater Dei coaching staff by. To have the talent, size and quality of kids that the Mater Dei football team attracts each year and to lose each year in the first or second round of the playoffs is all the evidence one needs.
Young men today do not respond to constant berating, lack of fundamental teaching and eight hours of football Monday thru Thursday. (Yes, there are players that do their homework afterward.) The coaches will make excuses for all of the above but you should treat other people and especially young impressionable men how you would like to be treated. You can be firm and teach without all of the profanity. Encouragement for those that are learning or coming up the ranks will go a long way to building a ‘team”. That “old school” style of football that Rollo teaches is just that - OLD SCHOOL. Unless you constantly adjust and adapt your program, business or life to newer more innovative ways you will be stuck in time. You may get by but that is all you will do. Mater Dei football will not achieve it success of the past because its coaches are living off of the past. The incident at halftime is just one small piece of a program that is in decline.
How sad I am for many of these young men to end their careers standing outside of the locker room waiting to be asked to rejoin their team. They were never taught what they should do if they were not allowed in the locker room at halftime. Maybe this will be the first “Unity Class” lesson taught by Coach Rollinson next year.
scubamcdaddy, hey that was the worst thing you could say? oh, ok sorry I typed too fast.
Does not change anything.
And, did you see MV get recognized by the City of Mission Viejo the week before your coach got recognized for the great fundraising effots they did this year?
I read that in the paper. I can actually read. There was a big picture too. Do you read the paper mcpappa?
I can’t believe, why dont you just let people have whatever opinion they want. Not everyone has to liki Tesoro. What do you care that any poster has a different opinion? It should not matter. That is what blogs are for. Opinions, it may not always conformt to what you want to hear, but so be it. It is a big world, and people have different viewpoints. And, honestly, some of the Tesoro comments do come off somewhat conceited and self centered.
At least one of your posters took responsibility for sounding a bit conceited. Good for them for coming back and explaining the comment. Who cares if they are a student, a parent, male or female, irrelevant to the blog. These are just opinions, if you can’t handle differences, then don’t log on.
To all of the Mater Players and Families,
After reading the above blogs about Coach Rollo, my heart breaks for you. I had no idea that your boys had to put up with being treated in such a humiliating manner and for four long years.
I think your team played with heart, talent and determination. They will have learned a valuable lesson in how to treat others and to give respect equally to everyone.
I wish we could clone Coach Barnes and all of the Tesoro coaches. They not only teach respect for self and for others, but they have made football for the players, school and community a fun activity. If you watch the players, they all help one another, encourage one another and hug all of their coaches with pride and admiration. It has been a phenominal experience for Tesoro.
My prayers to all of your talented young men.
Hello, we do not want coaches like yours. Everyone has their own styles and methodologies. One decent season does not a great coach make. You guys are incredible. They don’t need you to tell them you want to give them clone coaches, just tell them your are soory for what happened to their sons. Tesoro, will you ever get it? Open your heads, better yet, your hearts and look really deeeeeeeeeep. There just may be a glimpse of hope in some of you. Take off your big headed hats, just for a moment, and think about some of your comments, someone named general on some post even talked about being better than everyone because Tesoro parents and kids have more money than everyone else. I don’t know, what has this world come to. Maybe that is why Obama is President Elect. But, that is a subject for a different blog.
Footballife:
I am truly sorry for whatever it is that your players have had to endure in your football program. You are right ,there are all types of metholologies. Some just a bit kinder and delivered with a bit more dignity.
Please don’t take offense, since we all know what it’s like to have your heart broken. I hope your prayers will be answered.
footballfan, did you read the blog? Did you think about the blog?
I have finally realized, there is no getting through to any Tesoro parents. All I have done is sit back and read, but at this point, a comment was deemed needed.
The prayers are for Maldonado. Comprehension is a critical part of reading my man.
I didnt see the game, dont have a son playing football at either school. But I have coached professionally and I am disgusted at what the MD coaches did! Not just the head coach, but all of them because No One stood up for what was right. To leave more than half your team outside, by splitting them up, and only speak to your “starters” is probably the worst thing I have ever heard. These boys will soon be coaches, mentors at work, team mates, and husbands. They look up to the MD coaches and to have the coaches teach them that when things are rough, that is how you treat team mates and players! How dare the coaches. Does anyone really want someone like that to “teach” their kids? I am ashamed of the MD coaching staff! All should be fired or MD is making a statement to the parents that they accept it because “what you allow, you encourage!”
Coach Rollo needs to step up and apologize. This will not go away until he does so. The Junior parents will also learn of this and question is integrity. I must say though the Boys displayed great character by not refusing to do the pride drill-they should have only had the starters do it since that is what Rollo probably wanted. Perhaps the planning is on the way for two banquets: Those for the starters and non-starters. Coach you have divided many and its time you come out and make a statement. Perhaps some are hesitant to come forward in fear of retribution.
As a MD football parent, i’m ashamed to hear what Rollo did at half time to all the non-starters. My son along with serveral others that i have heard from were humilated. Rollo needs to practice what he preachs and far as team unity. I can remember last year at the Nike passing league tourney, when we beat MV and they didn’t come out to shake our boys hands, we all knew that it wasn’t there boys fault but there coach, and Rollo you have just lowed yourself to that level. I’m not glad that we lost, but had we won i’m hearing that there would have been alot of boys not showing up to practice today. Rollo man up and apologize, everybody is watching now !!!
I wonder if Rollinson even reads these blogs. You may want to go talk to him in person.
I agree with you JoeCinOC coach Rollo doesn’t have the time to read these I would think. Hey what happen to Maldonado I hope he got better.
I haven’t heard. I hope he is doing well also. Hey, good luck to you guys this Saturday. I’m hoping for a great game!! A defensive slug-fest!
great game tesoro.
i am trying to balance actions of Rollo against his personal desire that night. i think that desire got the better of him and hopefully he is not proud of his actions. it would be a great lesson if Rollo would apologize so that these kids understand that as adults we do not always make wise choices but can be accountable for the choices we do make. it would also be wise if MD and Rollo were just honest from the beginning that 70% of the “team” are there to bankroll the program. the kids would still be in the program and the parents would still support MD because being a part of this program and the tradition of football brings great pride to all who participate. the talent is deep at MD but there is no christian value system in any football program other than prayer and platitudes; the program is in place to win and to showcase talented athletes along with the school. if your child participates you accept that fact and take pride in their effort and strength of character. i believe that this behavior does have a positive lesson for those that are “non-starters” and they can use that lesson to affect their world as adults in a positive manor. god bless ALL THE YOUNG MEN who gave their heart and soul to this program. do not let this unfortunate event overshadow your effort or pride because you KNOW what you have accomplished. The MD football program is not one person or one coach, it is YOU!
I think this game was played w/so much heart you could feel it in the stands. Those boys MD or Tesoro were there to play thier hearts out…they each wanted the win that night. They both fought as hard as they could and gave it thier best. It was a considerably cold evening and there was moisture and dew all over the field…players were slipping….balls were dropped. The players on the sidelines were bouncing up and down trying to keep warm while standing in support of their team.
It was a great game….MD played like the champs they are…Tesoro as well.
HOWEVER…MD was getting unbeleivably LOUSY calls…it was blatantly clear whose side the refs. were on, it was almost to the point of insults the things thery were calling and things they “didn’t see” that the thousands of fans sardined in the stands did see.
If these football contests are going to continue we need more professionalism out on the field by the men who are supposed to be professionls..ie..refs and Rollinson.
This is not the first time Rollinson and his arrogant staff have lost a game for these players…
WHY would you go to the locker room w/time left on the clock and 2 time outs remaining??? He did the same thing during the OL game…play till the end…use your clock…use your time outs!!!
DON’T LEAVE YOUR PLAYERS STANDING OUT IN THE COLD….YOUR RIDICULOUS…W/O THESE BOYS YOU WOULD BE NOTHING!!!!
Iam sad for MD! good job guys you did well this season…don’t hang your heads low…it’s not the Rollinson/Barkley show…it’s the MONARCH SHOW!
Good luck to you all….we are proud of you! you worked your butts off!
Has anyone heard if Rollo has addressed his players and parents regarding this? Just not cool.
Look at the replay on cox there was no late hit it was perfectlly legal i watched it on friday night 11-2 they showed a replay there was no late hit STOP CRYING you guys just cant believe you lost to a team that is better than you we dont take steroids either that was only bret wiener and he already graduated
No apology to date! Why should “Bruce All Mighty” lower himself to apologies to a bunch of worthless looser scum and their looser parents! Only Winners count! Bruce and his “starters” are winners (in his minds!) so no apology is needed!!!
For those of you who sit in judgment of Rollinson, how very “little” you are in your belittling efforts. Rollinson is a great coach and has produced year after year a successful football team. Many of you sit back and express your opinions as if you know what makes a successful football team year after year. The football players at Mater Dei don’t need or solicit your sympathies. They are real men despite your imposed pity. Wake up — this is the real world. The real world does not pity nor does it treat people with kid gloves. It is what it is! Football is not a sissy sport. Many of you bloggers are “wanna be” football players or your time has come and gone. The football players at Mater Dei have a high respect for their coaches despite what you might believe. Rollinson is a great coach. His coaching technique may not be acceptable to many of you, but overall, we are happy with him. You keep your coach and we’ll keep ours! We wouldn’t have it any other way. Go Mater Dei — where real men play football!
How typical self serving to think you speak for all of the MD parents. I can assure you that many of the parents of none starters (juniors and seniors alike) who were omitted from the halftime meeting do not share your view of coach Rollinson. “Real Men” honor commitments. They stand by them in tough situations. If Rollinson is a “Real Man” then a commitment made to whole team to be a “team” at the start of the season should be honored even when he and his starters are loosing! A request made to the team that they honor and support each other should apply to all! What honor was extended to the none-starters by the coaches or the starters? Which “Real Man”, assistant coaches included, stood up for the team? Who had the manhood to challenge a shameful act by Rollinson? NO ONE! Real Men HA!!!
A “Real Man” would the manhood to apologize to the young men he so humiliated and betrayed their loyalty!
We are talking about HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL here…not the US Army!!
For a program that prides itself on not “cutting” anyone so that all players feel apart of the team…..really?
At least let the Seniors finish up their last game as a team.
That is not treating them with “kid gloves”, it’s giving them the pride and respect they deserve after 4 years.
Don’t get me wrong I have huge repsect for Mater Dei…just can’t back this one up.
There will always be people who don’t agree on everything, even coaching styles. When you are in a coaching position, you are free to coach your style. If Rollinson felt the need to have the starters only in the locker room, I believe he must have had good reason. Too many people want to coach from the sidelines. You see it all the time. Some have trouble with trust and surrender. Not all the players feel the sentiments that are being expressed. . .only a few. Unfortunately, that will always be the case in life. It is unfortunate that it turned out the way it did, but to sit and gripe about it and make a bigger case out of it, is another. It’s time we all moved on. It isn’t going to change anything. And, knowing all that we know, there are still players that want to be coached by Rollinson. Mater Dei is not a neighborhood public school, it is by choice, and an expensive one at that, that players attend. I would venture to guess that the athletes that attend Mater Dei choose that school because of the reputation it has. And it obtained its status under the direction and leadership of some great coaching talent combined with great athletic ability. So, those who feel Rollinson should be fired, not everyone shares the same feelings –call it self-serving or whatever. I don’t understand the self-serving part, I am not a starter, nor do I have a starter player as a son.
It simply is an observation and an opinion, just like the rest. I am just presenting another side; that is all.
I waited nearly a week to comment on this sad state of affairs. In all of my years of playing and coaching sports, I was always told you win as a team and you lose as a team. Since the second round playoff loss last year, one thing was stressed…. UNITY! Yet at every opportunity the MD coaching staff has driven a wedge right down the middle of the team. ie: The Nike Passing tournament, skilled guys go, fatmen stay home, Linemen competition some go others watch, Starters on one bus, scrubs on the other, Halftime at the Tesoro game.
A concerned parent met with Coach Rollinson this week about what happened and he shrugged it off as a couple of parents being upset about their players lack of playing time and that it was no big deal. It was a huge deal, when the locked out players were forced to urinate on the side of a building it became a big deal. Most of the players that were left out in the cold were already resigned to the fact that they were not going to play but up to that point they were still part of the team.
Coach Rollinson doesn’t realize the long term implications of his actions last Friday night. Many big donors to the football program had players that were left outside during the game, I just heard their wallets slam shut. There are many younger football players that had older brothers that were left outside during the game, I am sure that Olu or Servite will be glad to have them as players. But the biggest problem is the way the reputation of this great football program has been tarnished.
Football-Love the Sport. You must be a current coach at MD. You continue to miss the point. It’s not about coaching from the sidelines–its about defending the honor of our young men. This was a humiliating act–what dont you get. All year long we bought into the program that supposedly involved team and brotherhood. Well, that was a big lie. Although Rollo is going to argue it was for a short time (not true) that they stood outside or the non-starters were not into it or slacking is completely BS. He slowly created this problem by degrading these kids all year long. There are countless stories starting from last year. This issue will not go away until the young men receive a sincere apology. FTBall-love the sport. I am sure some dont feel the same way as some of us–the beauty of our gift to have opinions. But its about what Mater Dei should represent.
If Rollo wanted to teach these boys a lesson he would apologize for making an error in judgement. That takes a real man. I know he wants to think only nonstarters are unhappy but that is not true. Other people are afraid of the retribution for their boys if they challenge him. I’m sure he is relishing that fact. I wish someone would treat his daughters the way he has treated these boys. If the swim coach did to his daughter what he did to the boys he would rip their head off. A sport is a sport. You don’t have license to bully people just because it is football. The other coaches should have acted with some character and stepped up. It breaks my heart to to have the year ended on such a negative note. If I everf heard him talk again about team unity I would say excuse me?………..was your team united last friday when you locked half your team outside? He will look past all this and look to next year and see who he can suck up to and which families he can throw a bone to and use up.
mdfan should get his/her facts straight before spreading false rumors–probably not a real MD fan afterall. The players were not left out of the locker room as some would like to suggest. Sounds a bit like vendetta…knowing first hand that the players were in the locker room. You now say that it was for a ’short time’; prior to this it was “they were left out.” Why not get your facts straight before spreading vicious lies about people. It takes all kinds I guess. Take a look at your own BS!!
TrojanFan you are so full of crap. You are flat out lying….the boys were kept outside the locker room. I don’t care if it was 3 min or 15 it was no way to show team unity. The conditioning coach and the “Chairman of the Board” monitored the door and told the boys not welcome that they could not go in. I can’t get over the the pinheads that come on the boards and say that it is not true and we are spreading false rumors. It shows that they think it was really a bad thing to do. The cat is way out of the bag and the people loyal to Rollo just need to suck it up and ride this disappointing wave of discontent.
Sorry, mdfan, you strike out once again as put forth by TrojanFan! I am not a coach at Mater Dei, not even close. You sound like you have issues and lots of stories. If, as you stated above, you were aware that “He slowly created this problem by degrading these kids all year long. There are countless stories starting from last year,” then shame on you for allowing your player to participate under such coaching treatment. Were you afraid of retribution? Or was your player a non-starter (not enough playing time) and that is really what’s behind all this? It’s unfortunate that all this was created in the aftermath by a handful of dissatisfied few. Perhpas it would be wise to encourage your son to play another sport next year under better coaching treatment. I mean, really, if Rollinson lacks that much character along with the rest of the coaching staff, then it would be prudent to pick another sport altogether.
Hey, love2watchthegame, so now it’s 3 minutes. If this goes on longer will it then turn into 1 minute. Were you standing out in the cold alongside the boys when they were told they were “not welcome” or is that something you gathered through blogging?
TrojanFan I am really so galled that you would actually say that it is a lie that I can’t get over it. You know it is true. Are you playing a semantics game? You can say the players were in the locker room but really only SOME of the players in the locker room. Why would people have a vendetta? So are you saying that the boys who told their friends and families that they were locked out are all lying? They were really in for the whole team meeting but decided that they all wanted to get together and make this lie up for shits and giggles because they wanted to make Rollo look bad? Really? That is so ridiculous that you really should not embarrass yourself by continuing in your defense of this huge lack of respect and judgement.
I am not saying how long it is but I can ask a number of players how long it was. Will that do it for you? They know the truth and so do you. They know how mad they were that those coaches said no you can’t go in. Do you have your nose so far up his butt that you really want to keep denying a fact. Own it. Embrace it. Say I am a poor excuse for a coach and I stood by and didn’t man up and say hey Rollo don’t do that. You can’t preach unity and and tell the kids to be there for each other and then seperate them when you see fit.
How the hell do you know if it a dissatisfied few? Have you taken a poll? Trust me there are people out there whose kids were on the inside who really disallusioned that Rollo would do that. They are reluctant to say anything for fear that he won’t help with the recruiting process. Just let it go buddy you are not making a very good point. If he would just say to the boys that he made an error in judgement and he was sorry. Now that would be impressive. What a life lesson he could give those boys.
Heydude:
Just an update. Yes I can read and this blog is about the Tesoro-Mater Dei analysis. You might want to brush up on your reading skills, before you poke a finger at someone else.
To say, I’m a poor excuse for a coach, why would I say that, when I’m not a coach. Do you see how things get started? Assumptions bouncing around and around…keep it up…it makes for good blogging, I suppose. You set a very good example!
Wow, Mater Dei guys calling Tesoro the rich kids? Talk about some sore losers. That is what we (Westminster) called Mater Dei back in the day when we were kicking their butts out of the play offs. The Mater Dei all stars from all over the county got their butts kicked routinely by public schools this year! Go public schools! Mater Dei parents may be able to pay for the best everything for their kids, but they can’t buy a championship. That is done with heart!

Your statement ” perhpas it would be wise to encourage your son to play another sport next year under better coaching treatment. I mean, really, if Rollinson lacks that much character along with the rest of the coaching staff, then it would be prudent to pick another sport altogether.” Is actually right on. I know of some parents with more character than Rollo who are privately considering this.
