Santa Margarita took the opening game against Torrey Pines, 27-25, at the Division I state championship match at SMHS.

The Eagles are Southern California’s top seed.

Yet Torrey Pines gave them everything they could handle. Torrey led 21-17 before the Eagles rallied.  The game was tied at 23, 24 and 25.

The Eagles started slow, struggling to find their consistency. Their passing was off and they mishit several spikes.

Torrey Pines is playing terrific defense and getting their hands on everything. They are really making Santa Margarita play.

In the end, the Eagles just have better hitters than Torrey Pines. The Eagles defense picked up as the set went on and this could be over in three.
