OC Varsity ~ High school sports talk by the staff of the Orange County Register

Albano: How I would have voted this week

November 24th, 2008, 7:15 pm · 15 Comments · posted by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

Just as Sly Stallone yells 'Nothing is over!' at the end of First Blood, those words describe my mood this morning as I have compiled another O.C. top 10 for football.

(Click here to see Steve Fryer's "official" Top 10 for the county.)

Here is the ballot I would have turned in this week:

1. Tesoro
2. Orange Lutheran
3. Mater Dei
4. Mission Viejo
5. Servite
6. Esperanza
7. Newport Harbor
8. Edison
9. Los Alamitos
10. La Habra

Again... How in the world can Esperanza be ranked above Newport Harbor when NH beat Espy 35-6????

  • OC Grid Iron Fan says:

Wow, La Habra only non-Pac 5 team in the top 10. I believe they deserve it.

  • beachbum - Those head-to-heads matchups aren't too helpful in the Sunset because everyone beat everyone. The Aztecs are in the Pac-5 quarters after beating a very good San Clemente team. The week before, Esperanza pulled a huge win again Edison.

Don't get me wrong, I really like the Tars and in my rankings, the jumped Edison, even though the Chargers beat them.

I gotta go with the hot team right now, not in a league opener

  • STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com says:

    La Habra is an underdog?

  • fealofani says:

My upset for the second week Esperanza over Long Beach Poly.

  • CARLOS ARIAS says:

Dan: I thought we were done with top 10s for the year?

  • Nothing is over! ... You don't turn it off, Los

  • MotoType says:

Yes, La Habra is the underdog! This school is the best kept secret in the county in so many ways, besides football.
"La Habra, North Star of the county."

  • fan says:

LA HABRA should be ranked higher... Hats off to Highlanders........

  • JoeCinOC says:

I wonder which Esperanza team shows up against Poly!

I think someone is going to have to shut down OLU's ground game to be able to beat them. They are really grinding it out right now. Ask Mater Dei and Fountain Valley.

  • Xxaapp says:

Okay Dan, you have to explain why the heck you place LaHabra above a team that beat them in a head to head game, San Clemente. I could see this if LaHabra beat a team that would be a pretty sure bet to beat SC, but they haven’t. Also, every team that SC has lost to is in the top 6 of your top 10. Which of those teams would La Habra have won? I could also see it if they were in the same league and went further in the playoffs, but they aren't. So, what's the story?

I guess this is why you beat a weaker team 83-0, because no matter what people say, it will help you in where some people will rank you.

  • wammyy says:

esperanza has no chance against poly.

  • EsperanzaFan says:

Newport Harbor beat Esperanza but Esperanza was ranked higher than Newport Harbor 7 out of 10 weeks!!
And maybe Esperanza has no chance against Poly, but Esperanza wasn't supposed to beat San Clemente either!
By the way Tritons...Great game, either team could have won. Good Luck next year!
    GO AZTECS!!!
