Irvine-Westminster recap

November 22nd, 2008, 11:30 pm · · posted by

COSTA MESA – Irvine’s football team survived a late scare from Westminster on Saturday night to capture a 14-7 victory in the opening round of the CIF-SS Southern Division playoffs at Estancia High.

The outcome wasn’t decided until the final play when Lions’ quarterback Kenny Chapple connected with Aaron Garbutt on a 14-yard pass play.

Garbutt was stopped at the Irvine 1 and with no timeouts remaining, Westminster could not stop the clock.
Irvine had called timeout with three seconds left following an incompletion to set up its defense on what stood to be the final play of regulation.

The Vaqueros defense, which had held Westminster (7-4) in check until the final drive, made one final stand, avoiding overtime.

Very good game both teams played very hard. Its ashame that the Head Coach of Westminster didn’t have more confidence in his other receivers. There were plenty of opportunities that Chappel could have passed to #17 or #3 they were wide open. They insisted on passing to Garbutt which was very obvious that Irvine knew the ball was going to him everytime!!! Irvine did there homework and hats off to them. The Lions were a tuff team to beat……

fan in stands…are you serious? You’re in the playoffs and if you lose you are finished. You have one play left. If the entire Irvine team was covering Garbutt, I’d throw that guy the ball.
Now I would say that hindsight is twenty twenty and I bet if Westminster had it all over to do again, they’d have opened up the passing game more, but as far as that last play goes, you get the ball in the hands of your all county reciever.
