Thursday Night Football Madness: The Remix

November 21st, 2008, 1:00 am · · posted by

I’m pumped. Are you pumped? If you’re not pumped, you better get pumped because the playoffs begin any second now.

I’ve set up headquarters at Tustin High for a first-round game between Magnolia and Tustin in the Southwest Division.

I’m getting my first look at Tustin’s star running back Anthony Wilkerson. I’ve heard nothing but great things about him. And it’s another chance to get a look at Magnolia running back Robert Cruz, who is a very special player.

With the intensity and pressure of the playoffs, it got me to thinking of the Fox series “24.” Everybody involved in the playoffs needs to channel their inner-Jack Bauer because Jack Bauer gets the job done.

When you are in the playoffs, you need to be ready for any kind of rogue playoff team that’s looking to kneecap you, throw you in a van and torture you for the codes to the nukes.

Always keep your head on a swivel, just like Jack Bauer. Jack Bauer is always ready for any kind of scenario. Jack Bauer never underestimates his opponent or adversay.

You can probably tell I can’t wait for Sunday to roll around for the special two-hour edition of “24.” But I also can’t wait for the playoffs to begin.

The time is upon us. Let the madness begin!!!

Are you kidding me?!!

Anthony Wilkerson took the first hand off of the game and exploded for a 67-yard TD run to give Tustin a 7-0 lead over Magnolia 15 seconds into the game.

I heard this kid was for real.

Are you kidding me (Part 2)?!!!

Tustin’s defense got it’s first look at county-rushing leader Robert Cruz of Magnolia.

Tustin held Cruz to 0, 1 and 4 yards on his first three carries and the Sentinels were forced to punt.

Two plays later, Anthony Wilkerson broke a 70-yarder for a TD and Tustin has a 14-0 lead over Magnolia with 8:47 left in the first.

But before we could take in what Wilkerson just did, Magnolia QB Elijah Laulu hooked up with Robert Cruz on a short little pass. You know Cruz has tremendous YAC and he took it 77 yards for a TD to cut the lead in half, 14-7, with 745 left in the first.

No more kidding, this is really happening

Ameer Webb is killing Tustin’s average per carry. Webb just broke a 55-yard touchdown run to give Tustin a 21-6 lead over Magnolia.

Tustin has run four plays, and three have gone for TDs. The Tillers have 204 yards rushing on 4 plays.

Correction: Magnolia missed the PAT after it’s TD.

First updates barrage of the night

Mookie Cooksie’s 10-yard TD run caps a 12-play, 80-yard drive to give Western a 7-0 lead over Sunny Hills.

El Dorado is off to a strong start against Huntington Beach. Kane Wilson scored on a 7-yard keeper to give the G-Hawks a 7-0 lead. There is 3:18 left in the first.

Meanwhile, at Tustin High …

You didn’t think Magnolia and Tustin were done scoring. Magnolia’s Robert Cruz busts free for a 50-yard TD run.

Here comes a full on updates barrage

Ruben “Meathook” Ortega scores on a 1-yard run to give Western a 14-0 lead over Sunny Hills in the second quarter.

Norwalk leads Garden Grove, 16-3, late in the first quarter.

Kane Wilson scores on a 21-yard option keeper for a TD to give El Do a 14-0 lead over Huntington Beach with 7:21 left in the half. The Oilers missed a 39-yard FG earlier in the second quarter.

D.C. says, “Some La Habra coaches are here and I don’t think they’re scouting HB.”

Meanwhile at Tustin High …

Fullback Taylor Richardson gets in on the action with a 3-yard TD run on the first play of the second quarter to give Tustin a 28-12 lead over Magnolia. That was a 10-play, 78-yard drive. The Tillers are messing up their yards per carry average.

Oilers on the scoreboard vs. El Do and updates galore

Apparently, Huntington Beach read D.C.’s comment on the blog and responded with a TD to cut El Dorado’s lead in half. Kendall Ivey scored on a 3-yard TD run for the Oilers to make it 14-7 with 5:44 to in the half.

El Do responded in kind as Kane Wilson scores on a 15-yard run as the G-Hawks take a 21-7 lead over H. Beach.

Laguna Beach and Santa Ana are underway at the Santa Ana Bowl. The Saints were driving until Laguna Beach’s Zach Smith got an interception at the 22-yard line. Beach goes up on a 40-yard pass play with 4:18 left in the first. Who scored? According to Chris Tobolski “kid isn’t on the roster. I’m working on that.”

Ruben “Meathook” Ortega ran 28 yards on a fake punt to set up a 26-yard FG. Western has a 17-0 lead with 2:07 left in the half.

Meanwhile, at Tustin High …

What updates barrage would be complete without another TD from Tustin. Dakota Lambert scored on a 2-yard run to cap a 6-play, 56-yard drive. Tustin has a 35-12 lead over Magnolia with 3:33 left in the half.

C.T. rallies and updates that just don’t stop

Chris Tobolski rallied to get the missing TD scoring Laguna Beach player who wasn’t on the roster.

It was Chris Paul who caught the 40-yard TD pass from Austin Paxson to give the Breakers a 7-0 lead over Santa Ana. That’s the score at the end of the first quarter.

Sunny Hills fakes what would have been a 27-yard FG try, but Kurt Deutschman was tackled for a 2-yard loss. Western leads Sunny Hills, 17-0, at halftime.

Eric Chan just drilled a 33-yard FG for Huntington Beach to cut El Do’s lead to 21-10 late in the first half. D.C. says Chan wears No. 65. You know? He’s a lineman.

At Tustin High …

The scoring has stopped. Magnolia has finally stopped Tustin. Actually, the Sentinels didn’t stop Tustin. It’s halftime and the Tillers award-winning band is now performing.

Tustin leads Magnolia, 35-12.

Halftime: El Dorado 21, Huntington Beach 10

El Dorado had moved the ball to the Huntington Beach 31-yard line with 11 seconds to go before Kane Wilson got picked off in the end zone by Derrick Romo.

The G-Hawks have a 21-10 lead at the half, but the Oilers are putting up a strong fight.

Mini-update

Halftime: Norwalk 30, Garden Grove 6. I told you it was a mini-update.

Ten defenders is not enough to stop Tustin

Tustin’s Cody Oxby got an interception on Magnolia’s second play from scrimmage to start the second half.

On the next play, Anthony Wilkerson scored on a 25-yard TD run to up Tustin’s lead to 42-12.

Now, I’m no genius (pause for OCVarsity blog readers to laugh), but Magnolia had no success stopping Tustin in the first half and that was with 11 defenders on the field.

For some reason they decided to handicap themselves and go with 10 defenders on the field on Wilkerson’s TD run. Maybe, they were trying to get points from the Russian judge for higher degree of difficulty, but that didn’t work. I’m out of advice, but I am going to suggest throwing 11 players on the field.

Updates are coming fast and furious

Santa Ana has joined the party at the Santa Ana Bowl.

Vincent Gonzalez caught a 24-yard TD pass from Chris Ledesma and the Saints tied it up, 7-7, with Laguna Beach.

But the Breakers came right back to regain the lead. Chris Paul (not the dude that is playing Orlando tomorrow night according to Chris Tobolski) caught a 38-yard TD to give the Breakers a 14-7 lead with 6:32 left in the half. Paul has 6 catches for 119 yards and 2 TDs.

Ruben “Meathook” Ortega scored on a 1-yard TD run. That’s his second of the night and it gives Western a 24-0 lead over Sunny Hills with 7:00 left in the third.

Chase Lansford, son of former Rams great Mike Lansford, kicked a 30-yard FG to give El Do a 24-10 lead over Huntington Beach with 9:00 left in the third. Steve Fryer tells me Chase doesn’t get shoeless like his father did because CIF doesn’t allow it. No shirt, no shoes … no kicking? Something like that.

At Tustin High …

Tustin RB Anthony Wilkerson has entered the ridiculous zone. He just put some serious moves on the Magnolia defense to go for a 62-yard TD, giving Tustin a 49-12 lead with 7:22 left in the third.

Wilkerson hurdled one kid at the 40 and spun some other kid at the 20 on his way into the end zone.

Before I could file this, Dakota Lambert scored on a 60-run and Tustin ups its lead to 56-12.

Tustin has run three plays in the third quarter, all three have gone for TDs.

You want updates, you get updates

Sunny Hills is trying to claw its way back into the game against Western with an 80-yard drive down the field to cut the lead to 24-7 with 1:13 left in the third. Brett Trump capped it with a 10-yard TD run.

Chris “I catch every ball” Paul caught a 9-yard TD pass to give Laguna Beach a 20-14 lead over Santa Ana. Chris Tobolski came up with that nickname. Chris Paul has nine catches for 142 yards with no rebounds or assists. That’s also from C.T.

Huntington Beach got a 24-yard FG from our lineman/kicker Eric Chan to cut El Dorado’s lead to 24-13 with 2:40 to go in the third.

At Tustin High …

Magnolia’s Robert Cruz scored on a 1-yard run with 34.5 seconds remaining in the third to cut Tustin’s lead to 56-18. I don’t know if I should call that cutting the lead.

Tustin responded immediately. Ameer Webb busted out a 49-yard TD run to push the Tillers lead back to 63-18.

Tustin has run 7 plays in the second half and four have gone for TDs.

Steve Fryer said he hasn’t seen anything this lopsided since “Paul McCartney’s divorce.”

Fridge time for a few of these games

Steve Fryer has moved Tustin to the second round in his bracket even though the Tillers only have a 70-18 lead over Magnolia with 5:06 remaining.

It looks like you can move El Dorado to the second round in their bracket. The G-Hawks have a 38-13 lead over Huntington Beach with 11:31 left after Sinjian Hathoot’s 1-yard TD and Ryan Cardenas’ 25-yard interception return for a TD. Hathoot does it again with 7-yard TD run to make it 45-13 with 7:35 left.

Somehow, D.C. managed to leave Sinjian Hathoot off our “Best Names in the Game” Furious Five list.

Western is another team that can safely be moved across in your Southwest bracket. The Pioneers delivered the KO blow in the form of Derek Orman’s 32-yard toss to Mookie Cooksie. Western leads Sunny Hills, 38-7, with 7:00 left in that one.

Is there a 46-point conversion?

Steve Fryer is the brains of this operation and he tells me there is no 46-point conversion on the books.

Jose Pineda scores on a 36-yard TD run for Magnolia to slice Tustin’s lead to 70-24. The Sentinels line up for a 46-point conversion and Robert Cruz runs it in. It’s good for … 2 points. I guess Fryer was right.

Tustin still leads Magnolia, 70-26. Actually, that going to be the final score. Tustin wins. That’s a final.

Correction: Tustin 76, Magnolia 26 (final)

I thought Tustin had taken a knee and it was going to let the final couple seconds tick off the clock. I was wrong.

Travis Farley, a third-string back, scored on a 50-yard run to end the game.

That wasn’t very sporting of the Tillers. Tustin also went for it on fourth down earlier in the fourth quarter, and got a first down. Come on, coach Miller. That’s a little overkill.

So the true final score is Tustin 76, Magnolia 26. They just barely covered the 48-point spread.

Bring on the updates

Norwalk has a 38-6 lead over Garden Grove.

Huntington Beach just got a 1-yard TD pass from Sean Guite to Derrick Romo. The 2-point conversion failed. El Do leads HB, 45-19, with 3:08 to go.

Here is a final: Western beat Sunny Hills, 38-15.

Laguna Beach leads Santa Ana, 20-14, with 3:57 left in the third.

Score update

At the end of the third, Laguna Beach leads Santa Ana, 20-14.

Score update at 9:37 p.m.

Here are the O.C. football playoff scores as of 9:37 p.m.:

Laguna Beach 26, Santa Ana 14 (7:13 remaining, fourth quarter)

Norwalk 38, Garden Grove 6 (F)

Tustin 76, Magnolia 26 (F)

El Dorado 45, Huntington Beach 19 (F)

Western 38, Sunny Hills 15 (F)

And away they go

What was a tight game is opening up in a big way.

Laguna Beach has opened up its lead to 39-14 over Santa Ana with 5:40 to play.

Final scores

Laguna Beach 39, Santa Ana 14 (F)

Norwalk 38, Garden Grove 6 (F)

Tustin 76, Magnolia 26 (F)

El Dorado 45, Huntington Beach 19 (F)

Western 38, Sunny Hills 15 (F)
